Socially distant street parties.... Yeh right.
No lockdown near me in the last week or so anyway.
I don't get why we celebrate VE day, this generation cant even stay at home to save its life, let alone win a war.

That's taking this thread into a whole new bracket. Screw that!

Anyone wonder how care homes are being hit hard by this virus as in initial spread, seeing as visitors aren't allowed then it's either care home delivery drivers spreading it (unlikely) or the staff in a lot of these homes have it and are passing it on. Almost guaranteed to be the latter so unless it's some really unlucky coincidence that a lot of care home workers have ended up contracting it, the safer bet is on a shitload more people have/had this with asymptomatic symptoms than previously thought?

A lot of care home staff are on minimum wage with zero hour contracts, they can't affort to stay off if they've got a little sniffle.

I really wish that one thing to come out of all this is that we pay the revered key workers a decent wage.

Interview with the director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who contracted it.

Key paragraph for me - "Many people think COVID-19 kills 1% of patients, and the rest get away with some flu like symptoms. But the story gets more complicated. Many people will be left with chronic kidney and heart problems. Even their neural system is disrupted. There will be hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, possibly more, who will need treatments such as renal dialysis for the rest of their lives."

It doesn't take a big coincidence for care home workers to have it. It's everywhere, very prevalent in society. and not hard to contract therefore it spreads easily.

As mentioned before disease isn't a binary process with two outcomes - good (not death) and bad (death). This isn't a familiar concept to most people

Today there’s also the paradox that some people who owe their lives to vaccines no longer want their children to be vaccinated. That could become a problem if we want to roll out a vaccine against the coronavirus, because if too many people refuse to join, we will never get the pandemic under control.

There's an easy solution. Vaccines should be mandatory, if you refuse you get a £10,000 fine.

My dad was a brickie, so he did all of that stuff in the house. My siblings have power tools, but I guess they're self taught as my dad died relatively young. Nobody offered to show me, and as the youngest kid I was probably a bit passive and never thought to ask. 😅

I understand people not wanting some sort of artificial vaccination so of course they should be allowed to gain immunity the natural way. Anyone not accepting vaccination should be forcefully isolated for 14 days and given the virus. If they survive they have natural immunity. If not, at least they didn't infect anyone else. Survival of the fittest is what they want? That's what they get.

No shortage of street parties going on around here as well, went for my walk and was having to weave all over the place at times to try to keep some sort of social distancing.

Came back to find an ambulance parked in the road, VE Day - COVID-19 edition.

We had a street party on our street.

Strict social distancing was observed.

Did you consider that these people were doing their best to social distance then you strolled up and walked through the middle of them all? If they were already there and then you turned up and entered their social space..

Well today has well and truly enforced the point that most people in this country are stupid, selfish knob heads. From my experience, there is also a strong correlation between those who are out making noise in whatever attention seeking way they can on a Thursday night and those having street parties. Guarantee 99% of them voted for Brexit too. Just little Englander bullshit. They don't care about the NHS or war veterans, they just want to get pissed whilst getting a few likes on Facebook.

The media also has a lot to answer for. The BBC actively encouraging people to do this shit.

I lose a little more faith in humanity each passing day. I just convince myself that other countries aren't like this and one day I'll be in a position to make myself and my family leave.

What's wrong with people having street parties if people are social distancing?

We had a few beers and music on our road and people social distanced.

From a distance :D  it might not have looked like it, but if you observed closely then people from the same house were near each other, but people from different houses kept their distance.

Nothing wrong with people socialising as long as they are observing the rules IMO.

Because many weren’t. And the two metre rule is a guideline. Spending a lot of time at that distance renders it useless.  Think about when someone is vaping, or smoking, or your breath in the cold air. Droplets travel further than you think and linger longer in the air than you think.

Well I stuck to my road - so can only speak about that, but people stayed a reasonable distance.

Obviously you've been out and about for hours carefully observing all other street parties so I have to bow to your rule breaking wanderings :)

Also now that you mention it, no one on our road seems to be a smoking twat. So that's good to know.

There were masses of those parties where I live but I didnt mind them and I am one of those who does get annoyed with the breaking of the rules. I got more annoyed at the close behind us singing that Vera Lynn song in the evening than anything else.

You know the best way to social distance is not have a street party in the middle of a pandemic, there were two parties near us yesterday and it would be impossible to move up or down the street without being 2 meters from someone. There were also kids there who obviously don't have a clue whats going on and were running around while their parents got pissed.

I can't talk about other parties, but I live on a small street and there were maybe 20 odd people there keeping their distance at all times.

Saying that, from what you said there do you live in a model village? How can you not have space to go down a street without their being a two metre gap? Either you had thousands of people out or your live on a tiny, tiny, tiny street that was made for ants?

So nearly a month after the Australian government forced all overseas arrivals into hotels protected by police for 14 days of self-isolation the UK government politely asks for guests and residents to do the same which will be loosely policed. Of course they're hoping to implement by early June. No rush.

Will literally wipe out the summer holidays on the continent crowd as your 20 days in Magaluf is now going to be extended to 34 off work.

All the to prevent the 2nd wave.
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

No street parties here, though I don't think I've ever seen a party for VE day even without a lockdown.... not something we really do up here.

Saw a video of a street party doing a soical distancing conga line.... that's just weird, and they were all holding on to the same covid infested rope.

Really do find it strange that people would even have a socially distanced street party in the middle of a pandemic.

As far as priorities go, it would be wayyyyy down the list of things I’d take a risk for.

My sister had one. Someone placed a speaker in the middle of the road for music and everyone stayed in their own front gardens throughout. I don't see anything wrong with that at all. Why is it strange for people to enjoy safely enjoy themselves and interact with their neighbours?

Then you're conflating a few idiots with the general populace then aren't you? Wasn't there something earlier in the week giving stats showing about 80% of people were adhering to social distancing rules? Yet this thread is full of people complaining because "everyone is doing it". For every Cosham street party, ironically their local hospital is in the place they live, there'll be hundreds more who are enjoying themselves whilst adhering to the rules.

No, I’m saying I don’t get street parties in a pandemic, even socially distanced. People in their own gardens isn’t what I’m on about.

Not conflating a few idiots with the general populace at all, I’d come to that opinion regardless of seeing pictures of idiots flouting rules or up standing citizens sat perfectly 2m away from their neighbour.
