2000/01 to 2001/02 - Stats comparison and optimism
« on: January 10, 2002, 03:37:44 pm »
Copied from offal ( :o ), where SimonC posted this comparison to last season. I'm other people have done the fixture for fixture check on how we're doing. The answer, despite our recent run of form, is "not bad"... ezpecially given our run in games to May.

This bears out a number of Dave_W's points... and gives me that modicum of optimism that I wrote about in Saints 2 LFC 0.

Anyway, this bloke on offal said:

Season 2000/01:

P W D L Points
Man U 38 24 8 6 80
Arsenal 38 20 10 8 70
L'pool 38 20 9 9 69

Last season after 21 games our positions compare as follows:

2000-01 21 11 3 7 36
2001-02 21 11 5 5 38

Comparing the results so far this season against last season;

00/01 - 01/02 - Points diff

West Ham (h)2-1 3-0 0
Bolton (a) 1-2 (Brad) 2-0 -3
A Villa (h) 1-3 3-1 -3
Everton (a) 3-1 3-2 0
Tottnham (h)1-0 3-1 0
Ncastle (a) 2-0 1-2 +3
Leeds (h) 1-1 1-2 +1
Lcester (a) 4-1 0-2 +3
Charlton (a)2-0 4-0 0
Man Utd (h) 3-1 2-0 0
B'burn (a) 1-1 (Man C) 1-1 0
S'land (h) 1-0 1-1 +2
Derby (a) 1-0 4-0 0
M'borough(h)2-0 0-0 +2
Fulham (h) 0-0 (Cov) 4-1 -2
Chelsea (a) 0-4 0-3 0
Arsenal (h) 1-2 4-0 -3
A Villa (a) 2-1 3-0 0
West Ham (a)1-1 1-1 0
Bolton (h) 1-1 (Brad) 1-0 -2
S'hampton(a)0-2 3-3 -1

On a results comparison, we are 3 points worse off on games played than last season. The following games are to come and the results/points last season are shown:

Arsenal (a) – 0 points 0-2
Leicester (h) – 3 points 1-0
Everton (h) – 3 points 3-1
Ipswich (h) – 0 points 0-1
Charlton (h) – 3 points 3-0
Man Utd (a) – 3 points 1-0
Middlesborough (a) – 0 points 0-1
Ipswich (a) – 1 point 1-1
Leeds (a) – 0 points 3-4
Tottenham (a) - 0 points 1-2
Sunderland (a) - 1 point 1-1
Chelsea (h) – 1 point 2-2
Newcastle (h) – 3 points 3-0
Southampton (h) – 3 points 2-1
Derby (h) – 1 point 1-1
Blackburn (h)=Man City – 3 points3-2
Fulham (a)=Coventry - 3 points2-0

The only problem is getting 3 points from Old Trafford. Apart from that I think we could easily pick up extra points over last year in the following home games: Ipswich, Derby and Chelsea, and the following away games: Middlesborough, Ipswich and Tottenham or Sunderland.

If we pick up an extra 9 points in these games and all other results remain the same, we will pick up 37 points between now and the end of the season – leaving us with 75 points at the end of the season.

That will certainly be enough to qualify for the Champions League, might it bring a title our way???

Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple - Bill Shankly.

Stats are nice but I think we really need a good win now to get the players morale up. This must really suck for them as well.

I can`t remember who said that "there are lies, damned lies, and statistics" but they were right.
I would love to believe what you are saying Barretski, but last season we did not get going until after Christmas, beginning with that mighty run of form in Cardiff that brought all those Cups and a Champions League place.
We seem to have run out of steam as this season has progressed, a situation exacerbated by GH`s absence.
We desperately need to remedy the situation before we are out of touch with the CL places.
Incidentally, SimonC puts some excellent threads up on the official site site, often the only positive voice amongst the rabble that frequent it!

I hope my reaction is not OTT and it certainly won't be abusive (except about the players not acknowledging/thanking the fans), but in reality we are playing as badly and unimaginatively as we did in the last six or seven games the end of the 1999/2000 season when we threw away a great position that we had worked so hard (with limited to resources and a roll-the-sleeves-up attitude) to get into.

We are still very much in contention - but really need to stay unbeaten away (at least) and win our home games for the next month or, apart from along-shot in the CL, our season WILL be all but over.

I'm not sure I agree with some of the criticism of Litmanen starting - he did much of what little there was that was good - but it was just all so casual, messy (players almost tripping-over each other) and passionless.

I did something along these lines at the beginning of December and, at the time, were only about a point ahead of last season's results. The difference was all the other teams were worse than us.

Now I did my calculations on the basis of Man City/Fulham, Coventry/Blackburn, Bradford/Bolton but on that basis we had 42 points from the same games last season, which means we are 4 points worse off than last season. Now 69 points will not win the title and, at present, we are not on course to reach that! So an improvement is required. As for reaching 75 points, well we'll see.

I'll work on something for the end of the month and speak to you then...

you can turn stats to your advantage disadvantage easily. the differnance between this season and last season is that.

1. Last season we have about 5 players scoring over 10 goals (Owen HEskey Fowler Murphy, Gerrard) from the top of my head. this season if it wouldnt have been for owen were would we be?

2. LAst season the likes of JC and Murphy were playing for better than what they are realistically capable off, this season they are showing their true inconsistant form, they are good squad players to have but shouldnt be regular first team players.

3. We miss Babbel tremendously, as he gave us an added attacking option, as well as being a great defender the amount of times he got down to right to overlap was incredable and gave us an extra attacking option, at the moment we dont have a defender that can do this which you can plainly see. Also Babbel pitched in with his fair share of goals, i think he ended the season with around 8 and not all from headers from set peices! remember his one at the pit???? a classic counter attack but this season would our right back be in the oppo box to slot the ball home????
