I came across the name of Peter Etherington for the first time around two years ago I think on the Red All Over The Land Forum, a time where this forum was flourishing with great writers. I remember getting an instant liking to this Peter Evo's write-ups, little did I know though that some two years later I'd be one of the proud owners of his book.
It's a great, honest account of this Peter Evo growing up in what he calls himself a very working class family in Bootle, Liverpool round 1964 till 1973 - a time in which he gets his first match at Anfield till he gets so addicted to his beloved reds that the unthinkable prospect of missing a match at Anfield forces him to swallow his pride and literally beg for a ticket.
Most of the stories in it must really take aback most of today's forty-fifty year olds, a bit of nostalgia would defenitely not be missed by them, whilst for us younger lads, it make us realise what a far cry those days were from today's hectic and may I dare add plastic age. Going to the money-lender at the bottom of the street for a tenner to survive the week was the norm that day, rather than checking the nearest cash machine. Some very hilarious lines don't go amiss, and honestly had me in fits of laughter especially when our Peter gets caught in this cruel world of adults.
All in all, a great book by 'one of us' I feel, and that surely deserves your tenner if haven't bought it yet. Not the glossiest ever, not the most fashionable book ever, but then don't we've had enough of them?
