Right. Used the oil few times on the trot. And then again after a few days of growth...it deffo helps with glide. Dont see if it shaves closer though....may have something to do with me making multiple passes

I'm also now looking for a scuttle (cheap one...something styled like the moss)

PS: How much has changed in my shaving style in such a short time. ;D

I use a Gillet Fusion razor with King of Shaves shaving gel every morning before college. Really close shave and the blades last a pretty good length of time (about 3 if you shave daily like me). Always have a quick shower before as well.

You shave daily and your fusion blades last only 3 shaves?...my fusion blades last me at least 8 shaves (2/3 of which are 3 days of stubble)...admittedly towards the end it's not as close). But shaving everyday can only take off so much....plus they're freekin expensive

lol was going to say. For someone that's at college that 7 quid could better be spent on white ace cider, cheap vodka, and 10 mayfair

Dare I suggest someone's perhaps had past experience of such expenditure mate ;)?

I last shaved on the 5th November.  I am currently displaying PST (pre-shaving tension) as I know at some point in the week ahead, I'll be shaving again.  My family avoid me during this time as my moods become more erratic, and I get harder to understand as the week goes by.

Couple this with the current injury crisis (nevermind the impending derby), and it's safe to say I am pretty much unapproachable right now.

You're right John.  I can't imagine that bleeding out of my arse could make things any worse.

You could try getting a sample pack first to see how it works on you.

For £4 i think it was. You get 3 of the balms, 4 creams, and 3 packs of the oil. All in a 3ml tiny pouch. At least that way you can try all the diff varieties without having to shell out 20 quid for the balm and creams

I think I'll just spend the money on the pre-shave oil, as I already have both the cream and after-shave balm in 1805 and West Indian Limes fragrances, and I smelt them all when I made a pilgrimage to the Truefitt & Hill shop in London last month.

On the subject of fragrances, has anyone smelt any of the Penhaligon's scents? The Blenheim Bouquet and the Opus are amazing - I am going to invest in both quite soon.

Is there any way to shave a 20 day beard myself? No alternative to visiting a Barber ?

Unless you've bought the official clippers from The Grinch with Jim Carrey, I struggle to see how you'd do yourself any harm.  As for wet shave, follow these pussies with their oils, lotions and potions, and I'm sure you'll be fine.  If not a little gayer for the experience. ;)

My new shaving brush arrived today. I had it custom made by Elite Razor. It is a 24mm silvertip badger knot, in a hand-turned handle of cocobolo wood and faux ivory. The reality of it exceeded my expectations - it's just brilliant. The guy is now working on a customised Merkur 34G to match, should be with me in a week or two.

Right. It's been weeks n weeks of me using a DE razor. And I just dont get the results I was expecting. If I go more than 2 days without shaving i need about 5 passes before getting a resonable shave...by this point my face is on fire.

Even after a zillion passes I can still go over once with my gillette and it removes hair the DE left behind

WTF am i doing wrong. All i hear from "experienced" people is how, after 2/3 passes their face is smooth as fuck..etc

It just sounds like you haven't quite found your cutting angle properly. Are you using a Merkur? You might find a vintage Gillette (such as a Super Speed or a Fat Boy) would suit you better. Super Speeds are very good razors (if you have a heavy beard, try and get a red tip), Fat Boys have the advantage of being adjustable, but are rarer and therefore more expensive. Could be worth buying one (this website regularly has vintage Gillettes for sale that he strips and replates so they're like new: http://www.safetyrazors.co.uk/shop/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=7 ), and flogging your Merkur on eBay - they tend to get a good price, even used.

Woooo. Got some new toys in the post today.

A 1957 flare-tipped Gillette Super Speed, which is in lovely condition, and a 1963 Gillette Slim adjustable, which is in pristine condition as it has been stripped and fully replated with nickel. They both look the absolute nuts.

Had a shave with both earlier (one on each side of my face) and have to say they are both brilliant. Compared with the Merkur 34C, the blade angle is different and takes some getting used to. The shave is close and aggressive with the Super Speed, and the razor is light and compact - would make a nice travel razor I reckon. The Slim is the one I am really excited about as it is adjustable, so I can have it on one setting (I chose 6) for my face, but dial it up for my neck (I chose 4). This is really good, as I sometimes get razor burn on my neck. The weight of the Slim is much heavier in comparison, and it is weightier and more solid feeling than the Merkur too. I don't think I'll be dialling it up to 9 though - the blade gap looks like suicide!

The Super Speed is on the left and the Slim is on the right:

No, it's something I'd like to try, but all the sharpening and stropping and paste etc looks like a right pain in the arse. Plus the fact that a decent one costs about £150.

As you can tell, I love the vintage safety razors though. They give as good a shave as a modern razor, but with SO much less irritation.

See above. Blades for a safety razor are about £15 for a hundred (a year's supply). Gillette Fusion blades are about £9 for 4 (2 weeks supply). You do the maths!

That's my only problem. I don't want to spend 40 minutes a day , sharpening and all that other stuff for a decent shave. I just hate doing it, and it's fucking expensive, espescially being a broke student.

I've got a couple. There is quite a bit of work involved. I can't sharpen them myself (I send them away), but you have to strop them before every shave. I'm not very good with a cutthroat, so it still takes me a long time to shave, but they give you an unbelievably close shave like you've never known. Until you're an expert, it turns shaving into more of a challenge than a chore.

Is spot-on. I normally use an adjustable Merkur, because it's twice as fast as using the cutthroat. And no razor burn!

If you're not a regular shaver (like me) or have sensitive skin (like Imperator), having an adjustable razor is brilliant. I often don't shave my head for a week, but I can screw the Merkur wide open and take off an amount of hair that would ruin a Fusion/Sensor/bollocks blade after one stroke.

The Super Speed was £15 on eBay. The Slim Adjustable was £40 (expensive, but it had been stripped and replated, so is effectively a new razor). That was from safetyrazors.co.uk . They often have new stock of vintage Gillettes , so if you're on the hunt for something in particular, it's worth checking back there a couple of times a week. I'm after a Fat Boy too to compare with the Slim, then I'll probably sell the one I like less.

It means more of the blade is exposed, so if you have the right angle, it should result in a more aggressive shave, yes.

See above. Blades for a safety razor are about £15 for a hundred (a year's supply). Gillette Fusion blades are about £9 for 4 (2 weeks supply). You do the maths!

ok at the risk of sounding like a retard what do you mean "safety razor"?? like the disposable types? I am confused I have only ever used Gillete razors but the amont of razors I go through is expensive, I wa slooking for a good alternative that provides a good shave, I was asking along the lines of another razer in the same format maybe the wilkinson sword stuff or whatever I really don't have a clue

hmmmm really stuck now. The Merkur has one of the largest gaps, but it is also very aggressive. When ever i shave with a DE my face feels like it's on fire. So getting an adjustable Merkur may just irritate my skin more

Choices, choices....Merkur or the slim (same one as you spend £40 on)

Safetey razors are the ones that take the razor blades rather than cartridge blades which fusions...etc use. Do a Google image search and you'll see 'em
