Hoping that this guy sticks around for a long time and hoping that his class has a contagiousness about it that can rub off on the rest of our defence present and future. Succession Planning or whatever they call it. Can't put all our eggs into one basket/player and arl that.

Wonder if he's gonna unleash his tied back hair any time soon.

Seems like a guy who could become a coach.

I was told by someone who doesn't watch much football anymore that he reminds him of Maldini and co. Better than Jaap Stam, he said. If this becomes his normal everyday level of performance, than I am tempted to agree.

It’s been his level since he came here anyway. One year is not enough to be compared to the very best, but in terms of talent he is up there.

Defended very well but if Lovren passes the ball like he did first half Al 555 would already be on here melting down. Thought him and Hendo - our two leaders - lacked courage on the ball at times in that opening 45.

Was in with the City fans tonight so in the absence of boisterous cheering I elected to watch VVD’s every move for 15 mins in the first half and for much of the second half. Could write several paragraphs but this is a busy forum so lets keep it simple. He did not put a foot wrong. Totally different class.

Van Dijk's consistency is what makes him the best in the world. Any defender, indeed any player, can play to an immense level in any game. But for Virgil to be so consistently brilliant is really difficult to do. He's fucking incredible.

Fantastic player and a great teammate too it seems. Always encourages, motivates and at times tries to console others following mistakes/goals let in. Leader on and off the pitch. Great to see we have a few of these in our ranks now.

Has been instrumental in our excellent run this season. Another great signing and brilliant cog in a brilliant team.

Always try positive passing Virgil. Lovren last night, not so much. Always back or square on marked teammate just passing His problem on someone else, inviting pressure on Becker, that was more significant than his mistakes. Dejan was rattled by Aguero unfortunatelly. But he had no option in the middle to be fair. City press was relentless. Gomez woulndt fare much better under circumstances.

He really was. So many passive balls back to the keeper from Lovren inviting pressure, giving City 20 yards to press more forward, Virgil will have a frustrating night to think over.

Gomez is streets above Lovren when it comes to evading the press. I'm not sure how you haven't noticed that!

I don't like seeing him partnered with Lovren though, there is too much of a chasm in quality between them. I wouldn't want it affecting his morale.

Not at all, but he's only human and his defensive performances deserve trophies. He'll want more from his fellow defenders in the biggest games.
