The Low Anthem at the Kaz were utterly spellbinding last night. Didn't have especially high hopes as I think both the (proper) albums are excellent in parts but very patchy, and wasn't sure how good they'd be live. Despite the singer's insistence, they played a blinding show. Never seen a song featuring solos from a saw and then two mobile phones. And yet it was beautiful.

Has anybody been to any of the Dovedale Social nights that some of the lads from The Anfield Wrap have put on?

I was thinking of going down one week so I wanted to know if anybody has anything good/bad to say about it.

Was reading about this the other day - will be a regular for that for sure:

Quote
The beautiful south (well, Allerton) has been a touch quiet recently, but thankfully, Penny Lane is giving south Liverpool a night to call its own...
Despite famously being name checked by The Beatles and thus ensuring that excitable fans will make the pilgrimage down to L18 to pose next to the street sign (or for the more hardcore – rob it), there hasn’t been much in the way of musical action on Penny Lane recently.

However, thanks to a partnership by the successful “The Anfield Wrap” podcast and the Dovedale Towers, the sound of drums – bass guitar, keyboards – is being brought back to the suburbs.

Having spotted a decline in available venues for live music outside of the city centre, they decided to take matters into their own hands and so the Dovedale Social was born – a weekly event which will showcase one of the best bands from Liverpool and beyond featuring DJs and acoustic acts and aiming to become a creative hub in South Liverpool.

First up this Thursday is the Tea Street Band, straight from storming shows at the GIT Awards and Liverpool Soundcity and in coming weeks we can expect local talent from Cold Shoulder and Silent Sleep. With no door tax (I know, that’s my favourite entrance fee alias too) it’s the perfect opportunity to start your weekend a day early. The fun starts at 9pm.

TEA STREET BAND – 5TH JULY 2012
COLD SHOULDER – 12TH JULY 2012
SILENT SLEEP (CHRIS McINTOSH)- 26TH JULY 2012

I saw the reformed The Dream Syndicate in Placa Reial in Barcelona last weekend, who were good. Odd seeing a gig in the heat after midnight, especially being one of the few people in the crowd who seemingly had any idea who they were... They were pretty decent - never my favourites from the bizarrely-linked Paisley Underground movement, but they always had a few decent numbers

Last night was Silver Apples at the Kazimier, supported by Blue Orchids. Well, in fact I have since discovered it was Martin Bramah's current band Factory Star playing a Blue Orchids set. Anyway, it was excellent to see Mr Bramah in action for the first time in a long while, and certainly the first time doing Blue Orchids stuff. A great, forgotten band

Silver Apples were really just Silver Apple as one of the two of them died a few years back. It was much better than can reasonably be expected from one American sexagenarian electronics wizard, and the thin-ish crowd certainly enjoyed it. Well worth seeing.

Irish Sea Sessions was excellent - perhaps a smidge less enjoyable than last year's, but still a fantastic night out. Deacon Blue at the Arena were OK - went down a storm with most of the crowd for sure; just not quite so much my thing, but the missus is a huge fan, and they do put on a decent show. Ricky gave a fairly emotional speech about Hillsborough - hadn't realised that they were playing the Royal Court on 15th April 1989

Went to see Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at the Kazimier last night - as expected, it was a very odd gig indeed. Support came from Geneva Jacuzzi, who is Mr Pink's missus. She was shockingly bad - just not my thing at all really. She spent most of the gig up in a little balcony above the stage to the left, singing along to a tape of the (electronic) music for the whole gig, hiding behind a see-through plastic sheet and generally pulling faces and posing around.

Anyway, the main event (when it eventually started at gone 10.30  :no - some of us have last trains to catch, you know!) was also pretty oddball. A three man band on stage with a big screen hanging over it, on which handheld (by Ms Jacuzzi) videocam broadcast Mr Pink singing on a platform behind the stage. You could see him in the flesh at times behind the screen if you were in the right spec, and he did actually come down onto the stage for about half of the gig. He was certainly having a great time, as were some young lads next to me who kept screeching. However, it was pretty good - his albums are rather hit and miss, but he put on a decent show.

That was probably my last gig of the year due to impending fatherhood...

Same here. The support act was a joke wasn't it! Could have done with playing a bit earlier, I was up too late really. But that's a minor quibble.

I really enjoyed the VHS gimmick. Thought the set lagged a little in the middle but the start few and end two were brilliant. Excellent sounds, really inspiring to hear little audio glitches and lo-fi stuff recreated via the sound desk instead of the usual straight live sound.

My last gig (to watch, at least) of the year as well most likely. Been some good ones, that was a nice one to finish on I think.

Not quite Libpool but Eddi Reader was great on the Brindley Arts Centre in Runcorn last week....first time ive been there to see a gig ...bit of an odd place? but impressive and eclectic autumn/winter line up of theatre and comedy lined up...including (somewhat surprisingly) Jerry Sadowitz at the end of the month....who knew?

My brother has just found out he's won a couple of tickets for Rodriguez at the Phil on Thursday so i'm going to that. I'm not 100% sure it'll actually be a great show, i saw him several (4/5 maybe?) years ago at Green Man and his voice was a bit shakey then. Also apparently he didn't sound great on Jools Holland at the weekend either but i'm sure it'll be enjoyable anyway. Just got to find someone who wants my ticket to young boys now.

Under a week until Van the Man at the Phil. Might not do much patter between songs, and you'll never get him doing a 3 hour set like Springsteen, but when he's on blob he's spellbinding. Always has top quality musicians playing with him. Orchestrates them like a little Hitler. The best thing though I think is you never know what you're going to get, performs each song differently every time he plays it, the free jazz influence from his youth. There's not many that do this, and it's what makes a gig magical in my opinion. It helps that he's learned lots of instruments. Too many acts perform each song exactly the same which is a shame. I wonder how it doesn't drive them nuts!

I hope these older musicians such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Randy Newman remain alive and tour for as long as possible, from a purely personal and selfish point of view, there'll never be another generation as talented and original as theirs.

I'll shut up now!

I'm gutted I missed Peace, it was pencilled in as one of my solo gigs to just head up and enjoy it from the back on my own but I had an interview at 8 in Manchester this morning so it was a no go.

Settled for Band of Skulls on saturday instead, not quite the same though.
