Liverpool FC Forum / Re: Andy Robertson (Andrew Henry Robertson MBE)

What do people think of Antonee Robinson at Fulham? I don't watch them much but he looks a Robertson-lite and going by our last match his stats over the season look decent. Might not be technically good enough, I don't know.

Agreed. Need a LB who can at least split time with Robbo next season and maybe establish himself as the starter going into 2025

1 more CDM - basically an upgrade on Endo, who I would definitely keep as the backup since I don't want Macca playing there.

I would keep Jota, Diaz and Gakpo. Salah I would cash in and while I would not be pushing Nunez out the door, if anything close to decent interest was there I would consider it. Salah's replacement would be the marquee signing and either Nunez (if he is still here) next season establishes himself as the de facto first choice attacker and fully picks up Salah's mantle, or he is definitely out the door.

I don't have any targets in mind, and this isn't the transfer thread, but those are the 3 areas that to me cost us the title. Goals dried up, too soft in front of the back 4, and with Robbo missing or catching up for basically half the season our left side was neutered.

Its not a transfer thread and I have been critical of Darwin but it would be mad to sell him and Salah and keep the other three. They are our top scorers!

I just can't get my head around the idea of "venting". Why post at all if all you do is make your fellow Reds feel worse after reading your toxic bullshit than they were before?* It's self-indulgent and incredibly self-centred. Your fellow Reds are also emotive, also despondent, so why make them feel a little bit worse with your knee-jerk hot take that just has to be shared with the world?

Nobody is compelled to post anything at all. You are allowed to keep it to yourself.

* Not aimed at you specifically, Andy**
** Well, not all your posts

all posts that made reds feel worse might be a well intentioned comment but its a slippery slope.

Think we sell Tsimikas this summer and get in better competition for Robertson. Ideally it’s someone in the 21-24 age range who can challenge Robertson next season but hopefully transition into 1st choice in following seasons.

Given Robertson is still a good left back I don’t see  this summer as the time to replace him. However, his age and contract (2026) means we need to potentially start planning for the long term. I think that might happen this summer by replacing Tsimikas rather than Robertson though.

We need class CDM and a left sided defender.

If ruthless would sell one of the forwards and get a younger one in.

Obviously just a feeling but got bad "Martin Jol meets Brendan Rodgers" vibes about this guy. Respectful tact and diplomacy is a prerequisite for such a high profile role, and unfortunately he's stereotypically Dutch in this regard.

If we're comparing him to bald Dutch managers, he definitely seems to be more Martin Jol than Erik Ten Hag. But that's not a bad thing at all in my book - Jol did well at Spurs. OK he didn't actually win anything there (they're Spurs, not winning anything is their MO) but he brought them up from mid-table mediocrities to consistently challenging for European places in the league. He was ultimately undone by a combination of Daniel Levy and dodgy lasagne, rather than by bad results.

In the case of both Rodgers and Jol, a lot of their problems were down to bad relationships with senior people at the club. Damien Comolli being a common factor.

Our current situation is very different. I'm optimistic we won't have similar problems this time round.

Van Dijk's shrugged opinion says it all "seems like one of the better Dutch coaches at the moment", talk about damning with faint praise.

To be honest, I'm surprised Virg even said that much given the circumstances in which he was asked the question.

Did I miss it, or has there been anything concrete (not baseless rumours from random sources regurgitated by Samie) as to why Amorim suddenly got dumped after a month of being the obvious media-briefed preferred candidate?

I thought the general view on this was that it was Portuguese sources who were pushing his name rather than anyone from our end, and in fact he was never a leading candidate.

Quote
...this eleventh-hour pivot...

This is speculation. The media being briefed about Slot has only started happening at the point when it seems to be close to a done deal. We don't know how long they've been looking at him behind the scenes. The fact that his name didn't come up sooner in this thread is more a sign that none of us know what we're talking about than evidence of desperation on the club's part.

Clearly he has been on the radar of a lot of big clubs for some time.

Timing is everything, as in life.

The timing of Jurgen announcing his departure couldn't have been much worse, considering we were still focusing on the hunt for a new DoF at the time. It feels to me that things are working out an awful lot better than they could have done.

What metric are you using there?

Bournemouth have spent heavily in the transfer market. They have had a Net spend of £115m this season and £75m last season.

Hughes was appointed Technical Director in 2016. That season they finished 9th. That was then followed by 12th, 14th and then relegation in 19/20. They then finished 6th in the Championship. They were promoted as runners-up in 21/22 then finished 15th after O'Neill turned things around last season and it looks like they will finish around 10th this season.

I think it is fair to say he has done okay and nothing more.

The really worry though is his record in the transfer market. You would expect a DoF at that level with the amount of money he has had to spend to have unearthed rough diamonds and then sold them on for big money. It hasn't happened. Over the last two seasons, their player sales have totaled £1m which was the sale of Ben Pearson to Stoke.

In 8 years at Bournemouth Hughes has only really made decent money once when they got relegated and presumably had to offload players. That summer they sold Ake for £40m and Wilson and Ramsdale for £20m each. That is pretty much it for players sales unless you include Danjuma who they sold for Just over £20m after paying a similar fee for him.

I mean compare that to the kind of job Brighton have done over a similar period. For me it is pretty clear that Hughes isn't here because they ran the numbers on DoF's and he came back as the outstanding candidate.

Its a mixed record but Edwards had a mixed record at Spurs as well before he got the gig here. Also surely we are not relying on the likes of Hughes to find players? Thats the role of the scouts and nerd analysts which do all that. We have an amazing bunch of those already at the club.

The Dof role here should surely be about integrating the different departments? Ensuring parity between the backroom and the manager?

He's been here 2 yrs & doesn't seem to have learned anything, maybe he's not coachable

His pressing has improved massively, so has his link up play plus he has far more assists than last season.

The anti-Slot brigade on here are making me feel ill. These rants will be getting copied and pasted over every one of our rivals websites. Embarrassing.

Not commented on him either side of the fence, I said "I am worried because I know nothing about him" but I just wanted to comment on this and sorry to come at you but... why the fuck do you care what rival fans think of us/RAWK? Like, people pick on whatever shit they want to bash us/other fanbases with.

Life is better when you stock caring what others/strangers think about you or you circle. Fuck that off.

People are allowed to be upset. It's OK to be angry. It's OK to vent.

I have a few close friends that committed suicide because they couldn't vent. Because they didn't think it was OK not to be OK.
