Theres a reason why pretty much every manager he's played under, club or international, has rated him. He must be doing something right.
He does stuff. It doesn't always look pretty, and he doesn't always get it right every time. But he never stops; not just pure physical effort, but trying to create, to make chances, to drive the team on.
He could have got someone else to take corners after a couple of them brought discontent from the crowd. He could have angled for a move away when Rodgers was sacked and Klopp played him everywhere except the position he'd come to the club to settle in. He could have complained to the press, taken his salary and switched off after being berated constantly by Klopp on the touchline in that game.
But minute to minute, game to game, he just gets on with it. Never particularly appreciated, never a glamourous player, but just effective*, productive, bloody minded non-stop effort.
*Except in a central midfield two. The position he apparently really wants to play in.
