I've heard stuff about it all . He got a cob on over something and he decided to swerve it all and not agree to anything about releasing any of it . Some of youse may more of what happend regarding the producing side of it all as I know there's a few heads on here.  Anyway . Lee Mavers is a fucking genius .

I get that Mavers was a perfectionist and no band wants to see an album released that they're not happy with, but I'll never understand why they hated their album so much, it seems great to me. Also if Mavers had his way would he have been happy with them never releasing an album in their whole career? But to any La's fans who were there since the beginning, what is actually wrong with the album? Should the production have been different? Are there any songs (apart from this one) that should've been on it, and any that shouldn't?

I’ve been revisiting the La’s recently thanks to the new Cast stuff putting them in my mind. I’d kind of forgotten how good they were. Fishing Net is a great song.

But to any La's fans who were there since the beginning, what is actually wrong with the album?

Nothing, really. Still stands up as one of the very best albums of its time. It just didn’t match what Mavers had in his head. But then I don’t think it ever would. Just the way he is. Troubled genius.

You can hear Neil's excellent drumming in the album sessions for songs like Son of a Gun and Doledrum that were absent from the album which was a Lilywhite mixing decision - the drums are there, they just don't sound like it was played

Also the There She Goes on the album was just a remix of the Bob Andrews '88 session, though they tracked it for the album

I really love that Doledrum take, the album version seems like a skiffle gimmick, whereas it SHOULD slap:

On the album, that take is robbed of the drums and notice there's no backing vocals; on the album they use backing vocals from a previous session (Leckie doledrum I think)
