My friend's brother is quite high up as an engineer for Mercedes and he replied to my friend "You guys know as much as we do!" this morning when the story came out.

Can see Albon going to Merc, but I think whoever goes will be a 2-year stopgap max if this Antonelli kid is the real deal they say.

Don’t we have big regulation changes after this season? They’re going to have to withhold a lot of info from Lewis over the course of the year.

Be weird seeing Hamilton in the Ferrari. Wonder how much press duties he has had to sign up for… (recall that being a big thing joining Merc). If he joins when they somehow manage to be the ones to reel in RB he’ll go down as one the smartest ever drivers.

Has anyone else ever moved directly from McLaren to Ferrari other than Kimi?

Senna was rumoured to be signing after his Williams stint but we all know what sadly happened to one of the greatest ever drivers…

Hamilton from Mercedes to Ferrari is abit like prime…

2026 is when there's a change of the engine regs.

Which just makes the decision to go to Ferrari bizarre, Mercedes nailed the 2014 regulations and then there were some more changes in 2017 or 2018 not as big as 2014 but pretty sizeable if I remember correctly, the last time Ferrari nailed the regulations was the Michael Schumacher era over 20 years ago, I know which horse I’d back in that situation.

They nailed the regulations in 2022 as they were pretty even up until TD39. You design a car round the regulations and then they get changed halfway through itsbt Ferrari's fault. It just slowed down the only competitor to Red Bull and has made for two seasons where aRed Bull have pissed the field. All so Mercedes can change philosophy anyway, so it was pointless in retrospect.

Berger in 1993 rejoined Ferrari from McLaren having done the opposite three years earlier.

It was a pretty big move for Hamilton when he joined Mercedes in the first place. McLaren had won 7 races that year to Mercedes 1 and outscored them by well over 200 points

Mercedes had tailed off big time that year. However in 2013 McLaren never even managed a podium and Mercedes had about triple their points, Hamilton won a race (Rosberg added a further two)

Part of the reason that they nailed the regs though in 2014 was because they had more information than anybody else about the engine coming in, thanks to the FIA who they were working closely with. The funny thing about 2014 is that Mercedes were so dominant...and were STILL sandbagging. There's some interesting interviews with Paddy Lowe talking about how Toto would be yelling that they had turned the engine up too much. The concern was not due to reliability, but because they felt that if they looked too good "something would be done about it" by the FIA.

I guess if Mercedes aren’t going to be winning, you may as well end your career by doing Ferrari (even though they won’t be winning either)

Perhaps the thinking is that they might be able to get the constructor's championship if the 2nd RB driver isn't consistent enough.

No, but the constructors care about those, which would explain why they'd be after him if he's okay going there to tick off a bucket list item before he retires.

There are rumours that Netflix have a film based on Ayrton Senna's life, it's supposed to be filming at the moment. It's been done in co-operation with his family in Brazil. I used to love Senna but feel no film would be better than the one that was made by Asif Kapadia.  :(
