It's interesting to think how English youth teams are doing well, but the national side is so bereft of any sort of talent or even depth, especially when you compare England's squad depth with that of Germany, France, or Spain, who could literally field about 4-5 teams that would be at roughly the same level or better than the England team.

It's probably been said to death, but what it comes down to is how few opportunities there are for English players in their own top domestic league, compared to French players in Ligue 1, Germans in the Bundesliga, and Spaniards in La Liga. Lack of modern quality coaching is probably a huge factor as well.

Is there any particular reason that Trent Alexander-Arnold isn't in either the England U21 or England U20 squad, or is he just not picked by them?

He's been a regular with the England U19's mate - but seems Klopp wanted him fully rested and fresh & fit the new season coming.

Should have been a penalty for Germany.

good strong start from both sides (could have had a penalty each) - and quality save from the German gk.

quality set plays by Ward-Prowse - Germany don't look too steady defending set-pieces... England should have scored there

I have no idea what Will Hughes is meant to be doing on the pitch and by the looks of it neither does he. All Germnay's play down that side- he is neither cutting off the pass or marking the man.

1-1 Gray, off a set piece after some pinball. England need to get to ht here

Investment at youth level plus us as a country taking these tournaments a lot more seriously then in the past?

I still think the same problems exist for the players in that a lot of clubs will not give them the opportunity, mainly due to the pressure on managers (e.g. why don't managers like Pulis or Allardyce play or develop youngsters).

Without the likes of Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli and Marcus Rashford being called up, i'm not sure you can say they really are.

It's been coming for a while, the talent coming through us getting better in quality and quantity. The 97 age group who win the Euros a few years ago was the start really.

I'd argue its only Rashford who should be in the 21s out of the three- the others have been key parts of th senior team for over 2 years.

My interpretation of taking the competition seriously is playing the best players who can qualify for the tournament.

Either way hopefully they can hold out for this result and not concede double figures vs Spain in the final.

Its always a trade off though- if you play 6-8 International senior matches during a season you probably would benefit more from a rest in the summer. Alli and Sterling fall into that camp

2-2, another set piece goal

It really was, but there is no pressure on the ball from anyone. England dropping deeper and deeper, not sure why as we are ok on the ball bit seem to have lost all bravery in possession (or cowardly tactics by Boothroyd)

BBC isn't overly complementary to Pickford.
