Even Warren Hegg was useful with the bat and would have played more FC games then compared to now. Engineer was the other I thought of too.

Just had a look at Engineer's stats. Over 13,000 first class runs with 13 centuries (including 2 Test centuries). Surely he passed 1000 for Lancs at least once.

I think opening the batting has helped Davies get to 1000 runs compared with other wicket keepers.

Hard to score 1000 runs a season if you are batting at position 7,8,or 9 for a full season.

There's probably been a Lancs wicketkeeper with a season average better than Davies this year.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Bearing in mind also that teams play 50 per cent less games now than they used to.

74 all out and finishing below a fairly terrible Lancs side. Where did it all go right?

Maybe Fowler when he was still keeping wicket, but then again I don't think he kept for a full season.

Hampshire will have 80 overs to either make the further 230 runs (they are 1 down) they need to win or to survive for a draw. Play starts there in about 35 minutes.

Middlesex 55/4 needing 289 more.

So as it stands Middlesex look set to join Warwickshire in Div 2 next year.

Lancs win. Livingstone got Lancs over the line in no time. 2nd in the table sealed with the win.

Quite the game for him. Think he'll go in the Lions tour.

Second is much better than I expected at the start of the season. All very tight beyond Essex but still nice to be the best of the rest. Hameed, Davies, Livingstone is a decent young core. Jennings should bolster that too. Shame to lose Jarvis but Onions in the short term at least should bring some wickets and Bailey has done ok of late. Parkinson looks promising enough.

That underwhelming middle order is still a concern and hopefully we can sign an oversea player under 60 next season!

Middlesex lose. Heavily. They're going down unless Warwickshire beat Hampshire.

Hampshire had a perfect morning and didn't lose any wickets. 64/1 at Lunch.

Looks like only Strauss can keep Middlesex up now. Doubt it though as Somerset managed to score 486 in the match.

I think if the Hants game ends as a draw they'll go down by a point so they have to win. Need 152 more with 6 wickets in hand.

Crazy table, Hants will jump from 7th to 4th with a win. Yorkshire, Somerset and Middlesex all done and dusted on 148, 147 and 146 points respectively so Yorkies could be no up staying up by a paltry 2 points.

The word "paltry" is completely irrelevant in that sentence. But thanks anyway.

What are you, a writer or something?

Bit embarrassing though eh (the table, as well as my vocabulary)?

Draw keeps Hants up and sends Middlesex down. Only Warwickshire beating Hants keeps Middlesex up now.

Liam Dawson is 9 from 75 balls. They're batting out the draw.

Really? According to the updated table on the Beeb they're 6 points behind (with bonus points added) and there's  5 for a draw.

I was wrong as ever. Hampshire drew and stay up. Champions Middlesex are relegated.

Good riddance.

Middlesex should absolutely destroy Division 2 opposition next year.

What this season has told everyone is that there is a very thin line between getting relegated and being right up near the top of the table in Div 1. The fact that they only play 14 games and where those games are mainly placed within the season (June & September) will lead to a very tight points table. I think it'll be closer next year with Notts and Worcestershire coming up. Don;t see anyone being as poor as Warwickshire next season and don't see Essex being as good.

I hope Lancashire are looking at this seasons's achievement and next year's squad in the same way. Whilst 2nd is a good achievement, the difference between coming 2nd and coming 6th isn't that big. I think losing Jarvis is a big blow. On the flip side, we got in Jennings and Onions. Jarvis is better and more reliable than Onions at this stage of his career. That's a concern for me. Unless they believe that Mahmood can step up and really challenge for a place next year. If Chanderpaul goes then they need to think about the middle order. Maybe Davies will drop down with Jennings coming in to open. I can see the top 8 being this next season (excluding potential international call ups) :

Jenning
Hameed
Livingstone
Davies
Croft/Vilas
Buttler
McLaren
Clark

The we'd need an additional 3 bowlers out of Bailey, Onions, Mahmood, Parry, Parkinson and Anderson (on occasions).

Will be interesting what happens to Proctor and Kerrigan who both went out on loan at the end of the season.

Think the likes of Brown and Lilley will stay as limited overs players.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.
