Argentina are proof that having the best players doesn't make the best team. They just looked disjointed and the coach didn't help to be fair. They had nobody to play make for the last half an hour. Pointless having all these amazing finishers if you don't even create chances. In saying that Aguero did miss a penalty and had a great opportunity, but Argentina looked worse when the subs entered.

South America's qualification process is certainly the most interesting, even if it is basically a drawn out version of the Copa America  ;D

Absolutely mate, they've been too lop-sided upfront for a good few years - amazing quality and depth - but when Messi is out (and sometimes in) the balance has not been quite right - whether in midfield or in defence - which is saying something given the calibre of players they have.

They may well end being looked upon as one of those teams that underachieved badly - they certainly make it difficult for themselves at times.

Not a good penalty - slow staggered run-up, not much power, not in the corner and the 'nice height' for the gk to save - https://twitter.com/robcantero/status/786003095700533252?lang=en & https://twitter.com/league_360/status/786009855198986240?lang=en

I fully agree with you. Marcos Rojo, Demichelis and Romero are still starters. I don't know Argentinian football very well but surely they have some domestic based players who are better than those. I think they need to sacrifice one of their forwards and bring in a midfielder, there's really no need to be trying to cram in Messi, Aguero, Higuain and Di Maria. Di Maria-Aguero-Messi would still be the most dangerous forward line in international football and allow you to balance the team out with somebody like Enzo Perez. Argentina have their hands full now, they're only a point ahead of Paraguay and as I said Argentina's next game is against Brazil. Paraguay take on Peru.

In some ways they seem similar to England a few years ago with our so-called 'golden generation' - a bit great reluctance to play a balanced team - and they'd rather go with 'big-names' crammed into team that has players in unfamiliar and ineffective positions. Whether that's pressure from the FA's, sponsors, media, players themselves, or timid management...

With Mascherano ageing and no longer in midfield they could certainly do with that extra-midfielder - it seems so obvious and has been for a while, yet the status quo - and underachievement - remains...

(we should pop in our cv to the AFA ;))

Does make you wonder what will happen after the World Cup when a lot of these will players will retire and there hasn't been many younger players given decent experience.

Should be a close and decent end to the South American WC qualification - as you say some interesting games coming up next.

Nice goal for Willian for Brazil's 2nd goal - hope they take off Coutinho soon - looks a heavy rainswept pitch, the game is won, and the Venezuelans have been a little physical at times - https://twitter.com/Brasil_TeamNews/status/786020703212449792

Should also remember that this is just the halfway point of the qualifiers, there is still 8 games to be played for all teams.

Fully agree with both yourself and Kopenhagen. He looks like he's got it all, seems to be a hard worker too. Named after John Tuturro's character in the Big Lebowski too, what's not to love?
Did not know that. Shame he is in City though.

I found the game on Youtube this morning, Couts played well. I'll admit I was a bit nervous, the pitch was awful, it was raining non stop. No injuries, and Firmino remained on the bench as far I can remember.

As for Argentina, what's happening to them? Higuain/ Aguero can't hit a barn door at international level.

Phil came through alright, just a heavy pitch do to all the rain. So he'll need to recover.

Bauza is a terrible manager, worst Argentinian national coach since Maradona.

Argentina need to give El Loco the job, he's suited to coaching national sides rather than club teams.

I doubt the likes of Berizzo, Sampaoli, Pochettino and Simeone would leave their club teams for Argentina, Bielsa is the best they could get in as he's currently unemployed.

For such a football nation, it's surprising how poor Argentina's back line,  especially their CBs. Otamendi and Mori... :-(
Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit to tackle big challenges; it should allow you to find values to road map through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are.

No worries - pleasure to help and get the info out there a little :)

Some decent games tonight - strange that they kick off so close together so we can't watch most of them - though imagine Brazil vs Argentina will be the one for most of us.

RedShadow - definitely mate-  surprised that Masch doesn't play for them in defence - having said that he was (and is) immense still in midfield too.
