Used to always go and enjoyed it, especially the free bottle of Guinness afterwards!!! But have now developed an allergy to Aspirin so they won't allow me to donate!!!

They used to give a voucher for a half-pint of Guinness for everyone who gave blood in my university when I was in college. A lot of blood was given.

Give Blood
« Reply #82 on: August 20, 2008, 06:01:39 pm »
I went to give my first pint of blood today, do we have any blood donors on here?  It's amazing what just one pint of blood can do.  I was inspired to give blood as a very good friend of mine sadly passed away with Leukemia nearly three years ago, and it was blood donors that were keeping him alive at one point.  Giving a pint of blood is nothing to all you healthy RAWKites, but to someone who needs it, it can be the difference between life and death.  At the clinic today, there was only two other people, on of which my dad, who took me, giving blood.  It's such a shame that more people don't do it.

Good on you!

http://www.blood.co.uk/pages/a1where.html all though the appointment finder doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

I think I'll book myself in as soon as possible. In fact mate, turn this into a poll, and see how many pints of RAWK blood we can get going.

Good on ya ! Its people like you who keep people alive. I, unfortunately, can't give blood so if ever in the future I'd need blood then its people like you that I'd rely on.

They always complain about not enough people giving blood, but when i actually went to give blood i couldnt.

The questionnaire before hand, that tells you whether you can give blood or not is huge.

I couldn't give blood as a i was Jondice as a baby.

In the US, blood donors from the UK (and I think some other parts of Europe) are not allowed either. This was due to the outbreak of mad cow disease a few years back, when a case of the BSE human equivalent - new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease,  was thought to have been transmitted by a blood transfusion.

My doctor told me i couldn't give blood because of my diabetes. Something to do with stricter rules on who can now give blood.
Checked on www.blood.co.uk and can't find anything about diabetes on there, but if you're on any medication, the staff at the donor station will decide whether you can donate or not.

There's a place right by Moorfields station.  And it's not one of them temporary van things.  So you can go in anytime.

The website appears to be not working at the minute.  Yesterday I just typed in Liverpool into the search box on the home page, and it found it.  I'll try again later, and get the google maps picture on here for everyone.

Fully agree with this thread. I've been giving blood regularly since I was 18 and always encourage others to do the same. (In my B&W world it's simple - if you'd accept it, you should give it. Though I accept there are various situations where people can't. I mean, you should attempt to donate.)

It often concerns me that the place is so empty if I go to the Moorfields one. They have noticeable dips in the summer and around Xmas apparently coz people are away or busy.

They go around to venues near work sites so I usually give when they come to Bootle Town Hall - we're allowed time off work to go over too! ;D Sometimes work colleagues come with me - usually women more than men ::)

I'd encourage everyone to go along when they get the chance. It doesn't hurt - in fact less now than it used to! In our nanny state now they even numb your arm before putting the needle in if you want! ::)

It only takes about half and hour - and you get free a drink and biscuits! :D

I actually think the roving donation sites are better - the staff are usually dead friendly and the nurses are more used to putting the needles in.

I had a meeting elsewhere the last time they were in Bootle so had to then go into Moorfields on my afternoon off a few days later (or I would have been out of sync with the Bootle visits). The doctor missed my vein, even though it was bloody obvious (no pun intended). The nurse said they would therefore have to leave it until next time. No way - I had taken time off and paid my bus fare, they were taking blood... !

"I've got two arms, use the other one!" Another nurse said she'd be happy to do it, and did a much better job than the doctor. (She has been there for years and is very experienced. However, I have only had a problem twice - both times with her.)

It was fine then. I'm allergic to plaster though so have to have bandages on my arms afterwards - must have looked a sight with them both bandaged! ;D I rewarded myself with a chocolate muffin for my tea!
We are a team of one half.

I can't either because I had a transfusion in 1999.

Funnily enough I received 5 units, which is exactly how much I had managed to donate between turning 17 and the government changing the legislation so that I can't any more.
