he plays there for germany u21, and i'm pretty sure he played for leverkusen too

I know he does, haven't seen enough of him in that position though to justify starting him ahead of Gerrard.

Diamond of Gerrard , Coutinho and Henderson in front then Stirling at the tip of the diamond

That's the 4 that ripped sides to shreds 5 months ago

In my opinion,

v top teams (Madrid, Chelsea, City etc );
                        Lucas
           Allen  Lallana Henderson

v half decent teams (Arse, Man U etc)
                      Lucas
         Lallana  Gerrard       Henderson

think this could work as a 5 man

------hendo----allen-----

--Lallana--Gerrard--Sterling--

Maybe im looking too much into Gerrards 20 min cameo behind the striker but do think it's worth a shot

Wouldn't mind seeing Allen, Hendo and Lallana as the 3, the pressing would be immense.

I think we can't play with 5 midfielders since both Sturridge and Balotelli seem to need a partner in support. ATM, Coutinho and Sterling drop out (due to lack of form and exhaustion respectively), for a midfield four of Lallana, Henderson, Gerrard and Allen.

Of course it's horses for courses and some games are more suited to different types of midfielders. It's nice to have options now.

Worth a shot against QPR with Baloteli up front and Sturridge coming on in the 2nd half

My first thought when he was left out against QPR was that he will be starting against Real Madrid. We'll see. That would require Gerrard further forward again of course. That was an experiment abandoned eventually against QPR - why do we think that was?

Gerrard can make an impact further forward but only realistically off the bench at this point in his career, a bit like Lampard this season. We play him every minute so that's not really an option, which means Gerrard needs to be deeper playing 90 minutes and when he plays deep him and Lucas just doesn't work.

I think it was because Can isn't yet good enough to play as the holding midfielder. I believe Brendan tried him there as it was against a shite QPR team. Don't forget, he could have played Allen there but I reckon he knew he had to blood Can at some point. However, as we all seen, it didn't work.
For all the claims on here by excitable types that Can is 'a beast', lets not forget that he is just a raw kid who has played, what, 5 games as a DM in his top flight career?
I reckon Can will be a decent back up for Henderson. However, it will take him time to get up to Lucas's level as a DM, if at all.

I don't think Lucas will be playing against Madrid, that's a special one and it will be about the players Rodgers goes for at the moment and that hasn't been Lucas for a reason or another so far this season..

I reckon it will be Allen, Gerrard and Henderson, Lucas maybe playing against Hull but who knows..

One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

I don't think we'll see Lucas again until the League Cup.  If we get knocked out of that I suspect his match time will be the same as Borini's has been so far this season........zero.  His fall from grace has been quite spectacular hasn't it :(
Rossiter absolutely bossed it tonight. Really believe he'll end up playing more games this season than Lucas.

Henderson won't make it here. Sorry but he won't and won't

Allen Hendo sitting with Gerrard in front as a #10 is our best midfield IMO.

We never got to see that properly against QPR though as our midfield two got battered, Gerrard had to drop back into DM to settle things down.

We have played our best footbal under Rodgers with a 1-2 midfield. Be that with a lone striker in afront 3 or a 1-2 attack (diamond).

After the failed experiment v QPR to play Gerrard further up, he'll be the 1 sitting in front of the defence. The other 2 will depend on the opposition. If we need to press, it should be Henderson and Allen. If we need to unlock stubborn defences, it could well be Lallana and Coutinho. And there is a bunch of options with combinations of the 4. Lucas and Can will probably be back ups only or used in cup games.

If we are playing diamond, the most likely candidates to play at the tip are Coutinho, Lallana and Sterling. If we are going with 3 up top the same lads plus Markovic will be choices for the wide men.

By the way, we did not really play a proper 4231 vs QPR in the first half (before Gerrard moved back in the 2nd half).

The only time we've played a proper 4231 this season was vs Middlesbrough in the League Cup, with Rossiter and Lucas as the '2'.

We cannot declare it a 'failed experiment' just after one half of football.

By that standard, we ought to have declared the Gerrard as the 1 in a 1-2 experiment a failure, as the first time we tried it it wasn't that good, at all.

The 4231 is a perfectly good, perfectly useful formation, one that should be a regular feature of a club playing in multiple competitions that include tough home and away matches against top opposition.

If it means that Gerrard sits out a half of a non-League Cup football match it's not the end of the world. We oughtn't wait for the unmentionable to occur before we try playing without Gerrard in a game other than for the League Cup.

I guess my qualifier "proper" covers that, although it's a weasel word.

It was a Gerrard-Henderson '2', right? Am I remembering correctly?

Very simple 5th as stated in another thread, Lucas was the main link from defence to Stevie in the last 20 against westbrom, playing the ball to SG exactly the way he wanted it, after all those two must know each others games by now. this not only allowed SG to get forward it also allowed him to press and harry aggressively knowing that Lucas was there to cover should he lose the ball, IMHO if Stevie plays forward Lucas must play as DM. I think it was abandoned at QPR because our DM's were not able to get the ball to Stevie which meant he was effectively out of the game.

I'd hate to see Mario dropped but a little part of me would like to see Sterling as a false 9 with this midfield:

-----------------------------Gerrard-----------------------
--------------Allen------------------------Henderson-------
Lallana---------------------------------------------Coutinho
----------------------------Sterling---------------------------

in a 4-2-3-1:

-----------------Gerrard--------------Allen--------------- (one of either Lucas or Gerrard. One of either Henderson, Can or Allen)
----Lallana--------------Coutinho-----------Sterling--- (or Markovic wide, Lallana rotated with Coutinho)
---------------------------Balotelli------------------------ (or Sturridge)

in a diamond:
---------------------------Gerrard-------------------------- (or Lucas)
---------Henderson------------------Allen----------------- (or Lallana/Coutinho - needs to offer pressing and creativity to link play quickly)
---------------------------Sterling--------------------------- (or Lallana/Coutinho)
----------Balotelli---------------------Sturridge------------

I got the midfield right for today which wasn't really hard to figure was it?  Lucas won't be anywhere the first team besides some minor league games and the league cup. It's pretty obvious that Lucas has been told that with Gerrard taking his role his game time will be limited and Lucas decided to leave. A move didn't work out for him so he was out from that moment on..

Back on topic... we will see if this midfield combination of Henderson, Gerrard and Allen works out, there can't be a better test than this game.

Yes. It's called look at how often Rogers has played him this season.

I think we need to try a midfield without Gerrard. Would it hurt for 1 game?

Thought Can looked pretty good when he came on. No reason not to think he might be holding down a first team spot by the end of the year - and some strength in midfield is just what we need.
You know what, I'm writing this here now and I'm going to put it in my signature and leave it there for the next 5 years, no matter how embarrassing it might or might not turn out to be: Jordan Henderson is going to be a fantastic player.

Allen, Henderson, Coutinho and Lallana with Sterling moved into attack.  Offers pace, mobility, fluidity, an attacking threat and a bit of unexpected ingenuity every now and then.  Can brought some power tonight as well, not for the first with us, but when he's in full flow then he's very difficult to stop.  He can obivously also play the holding role and we have Lucas as well as Gerrard.  But Allen, Henderson, Coutinho and Lallana should always be there if they're available in my view, that's our best midfield.

I`m so terribly disappointed how we played against their pressing in the first half. You`d think in the 3rd season with the coach who`s obsessed with controlling the game and dominating the ball we`d be much better at keepball.

But it was nothing compared how much worse we were without the ball even - they obviously have some masters at passing but still I can understand Hendo, Allen, Sterling they all lack CL experience but then you look at our most experienced midfielder and you just never see him anticipating things, winning the ball back, having any influence whatsoever...so disappointing.

My belief in Rodgers` ability to build a midfield that can compete with elite ones has been majorly shaken tonight. Yes we need CL experience, and we need to learn but this is our 3rd season with him and we looked better in midfield at very star of his reign than we are now and I`m not just talking about tonight but about the whole of this season.

It's the truth, Stav, and you should realise it by now. It's just deep within your soul, you can't let go. Lucas is not going to be part of LFC much longer going forward.

Fuck knows how to sort out the midfield to be honest. My preferred 3 started and we were still dominated.

Liverpool's best midfield combination will (and ought to) depend on what kind of approach to the game we take.

Without a doubt, Gerrard/Allen-Henderson is an excellent midfield combination. But was it the correct one for this match vs Real Madrid?
