Gomel vs Liverpool - Europa League 3QR 1st Leg (KO 19:00)
« on: July 29, 2012, 07:18:00 pm »
Since the other thread is specifically for the draw, I figured we could use our first competitive match thread of the season.

We'll win, I'm sure of it. I hope some of the lads that didn't play much in the friendlies will play to get their match fitness up.

anyone know if this is on tele?

Very much looking forward to it!  Hopefully we'll have a fitter team and we'll not be thwarted by the heat as much.

Cole to have a stormer.

Olympics will probably shove it out of the TV-programme though. Have LFCTV aired europa-matches before?

Qualifiers, if on telly at all, usually get announced the day before or so. At least that's how I recall it from two years ago.

Could be a tricky one if we are not up to speed. I remember Braga taking us out of this competition a couple of seasons back so we cant expect to go through just because we are the bigger name.

Aslo, from the last time we were in this competition Roy (like it or not) got us through the qualifiers and group stages without any rreal scares, would be nice if Mr Rodgers can steer us through without any hairy moments.

Carra as captain for this one, I think it will be best to leave Stevie G at home and have him play in the 2nd leg. The players with injury records from last season, Lucas, Gerrard and Adam, may well benefit from missing the away trip afer the American tour.

Looking forward to seeing Borini leading our line for this one, he could bag a few in the qualifiers and take that confidence into the league.

I think ITV 2/3 will show this one but it will be announced closer to the date.

Braga are far better than Gomel though, as far as I know.

Aside from that, I largely agree with you. I'd rather see Carroll leading the line though, I reckon Borini is going to be used on the wings.

The one good thing that may come of having these very earlier pre-qualifiers under our belt is, is we may hit the ground running in the league considering that twat of a start to the season we've got.

I don't mind the start much. In the league, I long ago reached the conclusion that we're always equally good as the opposition. It makes no difference who we play.

Can't see Carroll playing, if he does, he'd be cup-tied. If we are looking to sell, that won't help us move him on.

I remember watching that Rabotnicki game on LFCTv (or online possibly) so we could see it on there perhaps?

You are completely correct, but then again, I don't want him sold.

Maybe seeing if he does or does not play will be an indication on Rodgers' plans.

We will have a better idea if AC is leaving when the team is announced for this one. Although BR has been back tracking somewhat with Carroll recently so who knows !

I understand what you're saying, I'm just a bit concerned with the supposed new system and style that we are supposedly to be implementing. Thats why I'm sort of glad we have these pre-season start competitive games, that whilst not being the greatest of tests, will at least give ourselves a chance to iron out any issues in a 'live' situation.

Setanta have announced they are showing this game but as for us in England who no longer get Setanta, not sure where it will be shown, possibly ITV4 or ESPN due to Channel 5 not having the rights anymore to Europa Football.

We've scored 1 goal in the last 3 pre-season games.

Need to address that in this game. 3-1 to us!

Need to address that in this game. 3-1 to us!

We scored 2 goals - Morgan in the 1-1 v Toronto and Adam in the 2-1 defeat to Roma.

Feel confident we will win this by a couple of goals. Rodgers is in a bit of a similar position Rafa was in during his first game in charge where people wondered if Owen would play or not in the CL qualifier - will Carroll play any part and get cup tied?
