Dirk Kuyt joins our goalscoring elite
« on: February 5, 2012, 03:52:32 am »
Congratulations to Dirk Kuyt for netting his 50th league goal and becoming only our 7th player of the Premier League era to pass the milestone!

For those with LFC.tv membership: http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/video/features/10807-dirk-all-50-league-goals
For those without membership, here is a low quality version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rhsSdU_HAI

To put the feat in some context, here is a list of our top goalscorers from the Premier League era*.

1 - 229 - Ian Rush
2 - 128 - Robbie Fowler
3 - 118 - Michael Owen
4 - 86 - Steven Gerrard
5 - 84 - John Barnes
6 - 65 - Fernando Torres
7 - 50 - Dirk Kuyt

* (i.e. played in 1992 or after) - these stats include all league goals prior to the EPL if the player played in both First Division and the EPL
stats courtesy of http://www.lfchistory.net/Stats/PlayerGoalscorers/1

The lad deserves a thread for some positive comment on his feats for us - a top, top lad (contrary to some in the above list who shall remain nameless) and a top, top player!!

My favourite goal? The second peno against Everton after Lucas' came on and Phil Neville's handball. Will never forget the buzz of seeing that ball bouncing up from the back of the net after skidding just under Tim Howard. Legend.

What's your favourite?

The one against Chelsea when we won at Anfield (think it was Mourinho's last Liverpool/Chelsea game)- fantastic touch and shot.

love Dirk to bits,he's always come up with the goods when called upon..

Sometimes he'll frustrate the fuck out of you but hes been a brilliant servant to the club

His professionalism is superb, never a bad thing about him in the press and hopefully he doesn't leave in the summer but I fear he will.

European Cups are like houses - Ultimately it's better to own than to rent.

A great servant to the club over the past few years, scorer of many an important goal in big games. Happy to see him finally get his 50th in the League.

This goal against West Ham was one of his best.

I'm a bit confused here.  I thought he was still on 49 goals going to the Manc game and then all of a sudden there were a spate of congratulations Dirk posts when the Manc game was in the FA cup and not the league.  As far as I know he might still be on 49 goals unless some goal that went to the panel was suddenly given to Dirk after much thought.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

I had forgotten how rugged that game was - and only 2 seasons back. If it had been this season's refereeing, there would hardly have been anyone left on the pitch!

Anyways, congratulations to Dirk - a great servant of the club who has scored some vital goals. Hopefully he can get a medal or two before he moves on.

That said, well done Dirk!

Few pulling me up for using EPL stats here. Fair enough I suppose. I love all time stats as much as the next lad, but didn't want Dirk's achievement to get lost in discussions comparing Liddell, Hunt, Kenny and the like.

I was so happy when he scored that. We hadn't beat them in the league for a while before that and I think they stuffed us 4-1 last time at Anfield.

I was so happy when he scored that. We hadn't beat them in the league for a while before that and I think they stuffed us 4-1 last time at Anfield.

Was sat right behind the goal for that and it was some hit, nearly broke the net. It was great skill to get the space for the shot as well. One of our "at-their-throats-from-the-kick-off" games

If the PL thing has any relevance at all, it's that we haven't been that great (Not like the 70s 80s) in the PL era and as such, it's probably been somewhat harder to score for us. Anyway, it's an amazing achievement in any era, especially for a player who has mainly played as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker

Aaaah, but Keegan thought them in with him. 50-50 split I reckon for their goals.

True that, still remember those telepathy tests they took. :)

Really happy for Dirk, favourite for me was his last v the Mancs, cup or not.

Rushie must regret that wasted season in Italy or he'd be top of that list without a doubt.

Robbie should have had 250 too if he hadn't been a clown.

Never realised Jimmy Melia played so many games for us. Well before my time but I kind of thought he was bit part here.

Melia played 269 league games which is fantastic. Sadly, he left just as Shanks was getting things sorted though he did win the league in his final season here.

surprised how big a proportion of those 50 were from following up rebounds or latching onto loose balls in the box. A really important facet of forward play. Well done Dirk  8)

I only really got to know of him when he knocked us out of the Cup with Brighton and I knew he played for us just never really twigged it was for that long.

There are a lot of players for all clubs who have played hundreds of games but never made a huge impact on Clubs. Perhaps we should start a thread on footballers with long careers who didn't make much of an impact.
Oh and congrats to Dirky  8)

Kenny and Owen identical goals scored thankfully not identical people!

Dirk has always strived to do his best on and off the pitch, well done Sir.
