Found another site with some very informative stuff..especially for those who may be doing a family tree or even curiosity living in a street with war damage.
The road i live in..most of the houses were damaged including my own, when i was converting my loft i found a lot of charred joists & a lot that were joined to another that wasn't replaced, the stairwell area was the worst.
5 doors down from me on the i found out there was a casualty from a bombing..links below.

http://www.liverpoolmonuments.co.uk/warmemorials/wardead1940.htm

http://www.liverpoolmonuments.co.uk/warmemorials/bootle.htm

The ones that stick out is when the Co-Op shelter on Stanley road took a direct hit, without researching i think the site is where the Lidl is located now. The other being many casualties at Brocklebank dock, will have to look into that but i assume that was where the ship loaded with munitions was hit.

Just going through this tonight and it got me thinking, so I googled a bit and came across this. It has bought a tear to my eye I won’t lie. The incident in Old Swan on 17th September killed my Grandad who was a fireman. My dad was just two months old.

A few years ago my cousin married a girl from the Swan. Turns out her grandad was also a fireman who won the George Cross for the same incident!

I recorded that programme on 5 the other day about the May Blitz. I knew Liverpool had been bombed, but I never knew how badly, 8 nights of raids with the sole intention of destroying as much of the City as possible. 2,000 dead, including 1200 in one night, babies killed in Mill Road, awful.

They featured that ship and had the captains son on, it was called the SS Malakand, Huskisson Dock 2 it was in, it had 350 tonnes of munitions on board, the captain was stood close to it and survived as the blast missed him. Bits of the ship were raining down for a minute.

This is the result

It's just a bit further along - where the Sefton MBC one stop shop now stands

http://liverpoolremembrance.weebly.com/co-op-shelter-bootle.html

I can remember my Dad telling me about it when I was a kid - there used to be a shop there then - I can't remember what it was though.

They talked about this in the C5 programme and had pictures showing the damage.

On terrifying statistic they mentioned was that by the time the Luftwaffe had finished battering Bootle, only 15% of the houses remained.

The one with help on ? Is it possibly aigburth road at the dingle end , bus stop says 86 to Garston , the steps on the left could be where the garage and Mac Donald’s are now before it became a dual carriageway

I think it's St James road, the steps belonging to the Anglican cathedral.

There's some good shots of the area around the Anglican cathedral in the Magnet, released in 1950.
