Took a lot out of me, and still have some chest issues, but just completed Year 2 of the degree with the Open Uni, so I still intend to have a few years working in the nuclear power industry once I graduate next summer.
Good luck on that as well Shaun. Would that mean you'd have to move house?

Yes definitely Tony.

I'll see what opportunities there are, but it will mean relocating to mainland UK (perhaps Somerset or Cumbria), but it's only for a few years at most, and it is something I've always wanted... a nuclear scientist!

Got a couple of plants very close to me,in fact I live more or less directly midway between them, one of my neighbours works at one although not as a "scientist".

Come over here it would be great to meet up again and have a chat about the FA cup. ;)

No it definitely isn't Tony!

Strange how often you hear of people getting a serious illness shortly after they retire.

It happened to me, I stopped work a few years early in 2015 so I could go back to Uni. But if I only didn't get a serious dose of TB somehow and had to give up after First year.  Took a lot out of me, and still have some chest issues, but just completed Year 2 of the degree with the Open Uni, so I still intend to have a few years working in the nuclear power industry once I graduate next summer.
Got me worried Shaun ;D

Six for me Phil, not that I'm counting, unexpectedly getting quite emotional.

I have been running a Gardening Club in school for the last three years and the students some of whom have been with me since the beginning gave me two cards they had made themselves and a bouquet of yellow roses, must admit i had some dust in my eye then.

Funnily enough, I was talking about this truly awful Love Island thing to wifey the other day and I had what she said was a totally inappropriate and non PC suggestion for a new TV show that could plumb even greater depths, but aimed at the older man.

My pitch was that it could be called Sugar Daddy Yacht and involve an elderly man pretending to be fantastically rich, and a bevy of suitably skimpily dressed and very floozy wannabee contestants who don't realise it's all a con, sailing around the smaller Greek Islands.

It would never get made I suppose, but I suspect it would break viewing records...

I am very proud of the fact that i haven't watched not one bit of it the moment I hear it s title being read out or  one one of the morons is being interviewed I switch off and I find the girls all so ugly , they all look the same facially . Then we have to suffer them some more when the cameraman shows their has back and they turn their shoulder to face the Camera think that it is truly sexy look but it might be if they didn.t fall in the pool or get run over by a beach boogie. What a twat I am , I swear to you all that I didn't watch it.

I for one would love to read some of the stories and misadventures you guys had all those years ago.  Always love reading posts talking about the "days".

it was all fun and games until you turned a corner and got the shit kicked out of you.  i remember those days as walking away after games in fear. not altogether happy days.

White Hart Lane was really bad in the late 60's. Getting to and from the ground was really bad. Huge gang of them, lots of them with white coats like butchers wear! They just jumped on lone reds, kicked them unconscious and went on to the next poor soul. You could feel the tension on the train back to Euston. Luckily nobody asked us the time!

I wonder how many of us would let our kids go if it was still like that now. Im not sure if my parents were unaware, had complete faith in me or just felt that nothing was that dangerous if youd lived through a war

I always stayed as far away from potential trouble as possible but thered still be one or two times a season when your heart would be in your mouth. At West Ham and Chelsea you were always aware of a menacing build up of people behind you in the away end.

One of the worst was leaving Wembley through a hail of bottles after the 1982 League Cup Final against Spurs. We were staying with friends in London so were going in the opposite direction, taking local trains with Spurs fans. Obviously keeping a low profile. At one station there was a rumour that West Ham fans were arriving and we had visions of being beaten up for looking like Spurs fans!

Talking about odd events involving violence, I was at the home first leg of the United v. Red Star Belgrade European Cup quarter final (must have been around the end of January 1958 as the ill-fated away leg was a week later). Coming away after the game over the railway bridge at the Manchester end, two blokes were having a good old fashioned fist fight ding-dong along what is now Matt Busby Way.

Now I assumed both were United fans 'cos couldn't see either of them being an away Red Star fan back then - but who knows?? Maybe they just had a difference of opinion about how it had gone and it turned nasty eh?

In the late 70's I got beaten up at the Racecourse ground in Wrexham by a couple of Cardiff fans.

It was at a Wales game so we were "supporting" the same team...

BBC4 on a Friday night can be an absolute delight. That Woodstock documentary was superb!

PS Hendrix on now !

Just been watching this, loved it. Hendrix a true genius.

Very good, I thought the piece about the conservative local farmers raiding their pantries to provide food for the long haired, anti war, bare breasted, liberal hippies was something you wouldn't see in America today. Sadly.

Yes that was really heartwarming, but the place that was initially intended to be the venue (the name of which evades me)  had a much more 'modern' outlook.

Dr Beaker, it was originally planned for a venue nearby called Wallkill but the locals objected.

Great programme; the humanity was so uplifting. Didn't know much about Woodstock until I watched it.

it was all fun and games until you turned a corner and got the shit kicked out of you.  i remember those days as walking away after games in fear. not altogether happy days.

It certainly was an adventure going to away games in the 70s. There was a definite hatred of Scousers wherever we went. But I think we embraced that like a badge of honour and turned it into a band of brothers type thing.

I was never a fighter but I did enjoy the adrenaline rush of going to places like Manchester, Spurs, Chelsea etc. Certainly plenty of memories and laughs from those days when us old boys get together.

Hope your all as bemused as I am (just to make me feel better) regarding how far down the hole our government has fallen, we may not be quite at the bottom but were certainly within touching distance. Im not sure where we go from here but my glass is certainly half empty.

Hiya Keith,

The first thing I want to make clear is they are not nor will they ever be - whichever establishment puppet is manufactured to lead them - MY government. Fascists in their behaviour, their policies, their arrogance and led by an inveterate liar and Trump-poodle. They are as Nye famously said lower than vermin.
There is nothing wrong with striving to win, so long as you don't set the prize above the game. There can be no dishonour in defeat nor any conceit in victory. What matters above all is that the team plays in the right spirit, with skill, courage, fair play,no favour and the result accepted without bitterness. Sir Matt Busby CBE KCSG 1909-1994
