Gomez is brilliant but I don't remember him being that high regarded? I mean obviously he was a big talent but I'm talking wonderkids like Sterling/Sancho and Eliott apparently. From what I've read about him, I definitely want Harvey Elliott at Liverpool.

He was definitely very highly rated, I remember a fair few people said they just assumed he'd end up at Chelsea, when he eventually moved from Charlton. Though people said exactly the same when Shelvey opted to sign for us as well.

The Sunderland players signed were Luke Hewitson a goalkeeper and James McConnell a winger but they are still only England u16 players.

I've managed to dig up some articles that mention Liverpool giving trials to McConnell, Hewiston and another lad named Harrison Jones (all from Sunderland) from back in April. I guess Jones didn't make the cut!

When did we officially secure these? The talk from last summer/fall was that we also picked up another Sunderland academy lad named Luca Stephenson. Seems like we are really raiding the black kats.

Gomez was definitely highly rated, but he was signed more for the first team as  opposed to the youth team, he had already made 10+ appearances in then charlton side when we bought him, the lack of hype in comparison to the rest of those players is probably  due to the position tion he plays in as well.

It will be fun to see to what extent some of our youngsters are involved in the first few friendlies. We will barely have any senior attackers available, so we should see a significant amount of the likes of Wilson/Brewster/Jones/Woodburn. I think it will be very interesting to see Woodburn in particular- last year ended up being a writeoff for him (still can't quite figure out where it all went wrong) but I think he's a real talent and can still make an impression.

Also interested to see whether Jones is deployed as a front 3 player or in midfield. Personally I think he's better in midfield but he's got enough about him to do a job on the left as well. Fun times.

Seems to have made a few appearances last season - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/layton-stewart/profil/spieler/580801

You listed some of the youth Liverpool players capped by England in an earlier post so you must keep an eye on this also. I can't ever remember seeing this guy listed can you?

Nope, but he might have played England youth levels before.  Itís just not very easy to find out anything about U16s anymore.

Thatís probably because wonder kids is usually reserved for exceptionally skillful midfielders or strikers who canít stop scoring.  CBs just donít fit that definition, by definition.  You might have one that comes through exceptionally early for a CB, like the Ajax skipper from last season, or atapamdu [or similar] from Chelseaís, via Exeter.   Gomez was known quality, identified as the best in his age group by far by the then England youth coach who went on to join Brendan Rodgers at LFC, which no doubt helped us secure him.

The official site lists the following as turning up for the first wave of pre-season training:

Arroyo, Brewster, Clyne, Fabinho, Gomez, Kent, Hoever, Jones, Lallana, Matip, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Phillips, Van den Berg, Wilson, Woodburn.

Notable youth omissions seem to me to be Lewis and possibly Glatzel / Duncan.  It had always seemed they were largely younger and further from first team level than the above but worth bearing in mind re pre-season matches and likely sightings.

No keeper, I think we have plans for Matip this season

Interesting that Anderson Arroyo has been named as part of the group of first team players returning to training tomorrow and Adam Lewis' name isn't on the list. Not sure if Arroyo has a work permit, but I assume he wouldn't be able to feature in the friendlies if he doesn't.

It could be that either they are not mentioning U23s names yet or, as the U23s returned to training on Weds, they have already done their testing and may join up after a couple of days while the seniors do their testing.

Just spotted that while Kent and Woodburn are back tomorrow in the 16, Ejaria isnít, yet a loan hasnít been confirmed yet.  Presumably he is training with a Championship club with a view to a loan.  So maybe not Reading again then.

Bad news for Kelleher with a broken wrist.  With Alisson away for so long he should have got lots of opportunity.  Now looks like Migs will be needed to stay and play, and perhaps Jaros will go on tour.  Iím assuming Grabara is going out on loan again, but maybe thatíll be curtailed with Kelleher out till later in August.

I believe he has Belgium passport already, should be easy for Klopp. If he rates him. Scored 12 and assisted 6 in the belgium top division, he looks more technical version of Origi.

They all got decent involvement last year after the world cup, Wilson especially. Agree though, be good to see if Brewster has what it takes to impose himself on the first team.

Agree with you both, I think Glatzel has "it". Works hard, can score all sorts of goals, drops deep and links play but can also poach goals. He may not be a standout physically but I think he's an excellent prospect. I think he has a bit more about him than Bobby Duncan at this moment, though of course I'd like to see them both succeed.

u23s played to a 0-0 draw with Crewe today in a friendly. Billy Koumetio featured at CB (for the first time since joining us, I believe). Abdi Sharif was the standout performer, per the match report from the official site. It was quite a young side, with a lot of 17 year olds playing such as Fidel O'Rourke, Jack Bearne, and Matteo Ritaccio.

Putting van den Berg to one side, Glatzel is probably the youngster that excites me the most after Brewster and Hoever. I think he's one of those that will likely get promoted to play full time at Melwood while continuing to play for the U23.

u18s also played a friendly against Burton Albion and won 4-0. 2 free kick goals from Jake Cain, and one each for Niall Brookwell and Oakley Cannonier (the ball boy who gave Trent the ball for THAT corner against Barca).

Cain's first free kick was a stunner.

The difference in heights of the U18s players in the 1.5 minute clip df  the goals is striking.  If the no 5 was Remi he seems to have filled out a bit and grown, and the newbies in that group look as though they have still to start their growth spurt.   :D

Oakley Cannonier rivals Fidel O'Rourke for a truly bonkers name.
