Disc read error on boot up
« on: March 27, 2019, 09:59:35 PM »
Pretty self explanatory really. Gone as far as reinstalling windows, ran disc checks (nothing) checked ram, unplugged cables etc. I reapplied some thermal paste the other day but I cant see that doing anything. I have to control alt delete at least 3 times for it to eventually boot up. Surely if it was an issue with cabling or components it would fail everytime and not 2 out of 3 unless the hard drive is slowly failing?

Any suggestions welcome

Would think its the hard drive, take it out and put it in a caddy and see if its OK.

Sounds to me more like the mechanics of the disk are on the way out rather than the disc itself. I’d make sure everything’s backed up off it that you might need.

I just ordered an external hard drive in case. I need to put a new build together anyway but didn't anticipate so soon!

Most Hard drive makers have free diagnostic software on their sites... maybe worth downloading and running it, if possible  8)

Faulty IDE cable

Sorry... IDE? And it's a mechanical drive (acceptable for storage but not for boot drive these days)?

Has this thread fallen forward in time 15 years?

Oh it comes to Divock Origi... he's won the European Cup for Liverpool! The man who cut down Barcelona has taken Tottenham down in Madrid! And it's dreamland for Liverpool Football Club Worrying times.
