Gini deserves a thread.

When we were first linked to him, I was not really aware of him too much as I don't follow the Dutch league and wasn't really interested in Newcastle at all (although that is changing under Rafa). But when he signed with us I did read criticisms from his Newcastle days that he was just a wide attacker or another #10...that he was a goal-scorer that couldn't score away from home...that his goals came in bursts and he went missing at times...and that we were grossly over-paying for a player that helped take Newcastle down last season.

Now, after 5 matches...he has quickly become one of our key midfielders with constant movement in attack and in defence. It has been his passing ability that has stood out and not his goal scoring ability. His defensive performance has equalled his offensive play. He doesn't look like a relegation club player that is beneath our standards...but a player that has the ability to take us to another level with his clever and quick link-up play.

He is getting better and better each match as he develops an understanding with his team-mates and...he hasn't even added goals to what he brings us yet. There is even more to come.

I must go back and rewatch some of the games as I haven't been able to make a firm opinion yet. That doesn't mean anything btw........it just means that I have been focusing on others and a lot of what he does has passed me by.

He was superb last night, getting better with every game.

I like him a lot.  He's still finding his feet but once he starts scoring goals here, and I'm sure he will given how intelligently he plays going forward, I think he'll prove to be a really good signing by Klopp.

Gini deserves a thread.

He does doesn't he, really glad that others are starting to pick up on what he brings to the midfield, I watched quite a bit of him playing as captain for PSV Eindhoven and I thought that with a bit of luck he would really be the midfielder that Liverpool were missing if he could make the step up.

I think a lot of the early complaints had something to do with a misunderstanding over what defending can be when it isn't crunching tackles, something you see less of outside the premier league. This is something that Klopp said recently that sums it up for me:

Quote
All the players are involved in defending until they are not involved and it is all about protection and being an option. When you don’t protect you need to be an option to get a pass or create some space.

Klopp doesn't even mention tackling so it seems he believes defending in midfield is being a outlet when things are tough, creating space and screening players, basically using football intelligence to read the game, things I think Gini is well equipped to add to the team due to the Dutch way of playing he was used to. I think he made his first tackle for Liverpool against Chelsea, but that was at a point in the game where there was no other choice, a break was on if the player he tackled wasn't stopped.

Perhaps it is a bit early to think of songs but given his nickname I think a pretty sweet chant could be made from the old Dexys Midnight Runners song "Gino".

He really dug in last night, just before he was subbed off he must of sprinted the full length of the pitch fives times defending and then joining the attack. Looked a big lad too compared to Kante.

There was no `improvement` in his game. He`s been tremendous from day one. It was just that he wasn`t grabbing attention by putting in huge crunching tackles and making 40 yard hollywood passes so he mustn`t have been that good. Instead what we got was a well oiled machine of a midfield that`s effective both with or without the ball.

Gini is one of the most intelligent midfielders we had in a very long time while his agility, composure and skills in tight spaces under pressure is doing wonders for our ball retention and game management.

Playing that mob away with 2 dedicated defensive midfielders in their team I thought he was fantastic last night. We could so easily have been outmuscled by them but him Lallana and Hendo all deserve massive credit.

He is going to become the new scapegoat if he doesn't start scoring at a similar rate to last season. I can see why we bought him and what role he plays but others won't. His signing, the sale of Allen and the relocating of Lallana shows us exactly what Klopp wants in midfield and Gini has the key attributes for the role. The fact that people are just saying they aren't sure what he does as opposed to saying he is shit probably tells you that he is playing well but people just need to moan now Moreno is warming the bench.

He pops up in the box out of nowhere and will get goals and assists because of that. A good signing who will grow under Klopp due to his tactical flexibility and game intelligence.

not seeing why anyone would mention something like that?  ALthough I have not been here long enough to know if you are on a wind up!

I mean, even the dumbest fans will catch on to the fact he isn't playing the same position for Liverpool as he was for Newcastle. So isn't likely to be hitting 10 plus goals a season.

He was very good in the game last night, and good vs Leicester too. He's going to be a key player for this team, just what the midfield needed, neat tidy player, moves the ball quickly, intelligent player, works hard, makes runs, just a good player.

Played mainly on the wing/AM for Newcastle.

Out of nowhere comes Klopp and plays him in central midfield alongside another 2 attacking minded players. Successful experiment

he played as a central midfielder before in the Dutch leagues and national team. That was the player Kloppo wanted! But yes, the fuss over us buying 'another' attacker was kinda funny!

He's been playing centrally for his country for some time and was a box to box type player for PSV.

He did a marvellous job linking play and worked his socks off like the whole team last night. Thrilled with him and for him.

Thought he was excellent last night (so much for someone who "disappears" in away matches!). Really good one/two-touch player, with an eye for a forward pass.

So far he and Lallana in the midfield three have been quite good. Let's hope their form continues.

My point was unless he does start scoring and therefore being at the forefront of people's mind, his contribution will go unnoticed. People were expecting him to come in and solely add goals to midfield when it is his all round play and attributes the reason Klopp bought him. Trust me, it's RAWK.

He's been really good bar the Burnley game. At first he just kept things ticking, keeping the sides balance but now we're seeing his fitness improve as well as his understanding of his team mates and he's becoming a really important cog to the system. He doesn't over complicate the game and almost always looks to move the ball forward and then move into space.

The other thing is that he's physical. He's not tall but he does a very good job at winning his battles in midfield, especially if it's an aerial ball. Only a matter of time before the goals start to flow but I like the way he plays with Lallana and the attacking trio.

We would have a bench full of quality players, and we would rotate them, especially since we'll probably be back in some form of European competition next year.

He done decently so far. I hope he is the goal threat that he was for Newcastle because that's what we are missing. What he currently doing is good but I'll be happy when he has net bulging. This is of course assuming he was bought for that which I'm not privy to

The irony of you moaning about this is amazing.
