That gave me horrible flashbacks to the first time Klopp took us to Watford:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35086289

Bogdan was obviously filling in (although a lot of our fans had been calling for him to replace Mignolet anyway) but what a contrast between that back five and the one that played today.  To think we used to live in fear of that lump Deeney.

I get anxious just thinking about it  ;D

I'd love to know what he said to TAA during the celebration after his goal. He had Trent in stitches.

He is our best player. He is better than Salah. Equal to or better than the Salah of last season’s second half. I don’t watch other leagues to know whether he is the best CB in the world, but he is certainly better than Ramos, who people often mention, and the best in the PL.

He is worth £150m to us now.
I whole heartedly agree. He's quite something else and I genuinely think that not only is he better than the likes of Hyypia and Carra who were works class defenders in their days, but that he's a level above them. He allows the team to play 10m higher like Ferdinand did and then makes every last ditch tackle like Terry did while organising the defence like a Carvalho. Players with his physical and technical attributes threaten to put it together but often never do. Van Dijk has done it. He's different level to every other CB in the league.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Random q - on the delafoolyou offside goal like 4 mins in - how did VvD not close that and how did Alison get beaten - did we slow up because we thought offside? Or just perfectly done by their player?

Obviously offside fortunately - just wondering.

We played the offside trap perfetly, and if the trap is played well, which it was, Delawhateverhis face is considerebly ahead of Van Dijk, and while Van Dijk is quick, Delabluenosebitter is very quick.

Becker is a great keeper but he isn't superman, it was a good shot, taken early enough with enough power and precision

He plays as if this level is inferior to him.

Like when you see a recently retired player play for a Sunday league team.

Carra basically saying that he's better than anyone he's seen at the club in at least 20 years and compares VVD to a combination of Terry and Ferdinand.

I think Carra's right,Virgil has the leadership, aerial prowess and toughness of Terry and the mobility and ball playing skills Ferdinand had making him better than both.

I think history is being very kind to Terry but Ferdinand was an absolutely imperious defender - a genuine all-time great imo. VVD has got a lot of career left and a lot of trophies to win before he can claim to be better imho.

Leaving aside what an absolute prick the bloke is off the pitch, it shouldn't be forgotten what a magnificent defender John Terry was. He was so dominant. Ferdinand was brilliant too, but from a pure defensive point of view, I think Terry was better. It's a massive compliment for Van Dijk to be compared to either of the two, but you're right - we'll see how his career stacks up to theirs at the end of it.

Edit: God, England were spoiled with defenders in the 2000s. Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell, Carragher, Neville, Cole...

Ledley King was magnificent too, would be regarded higher had he not had such bad luck with injuries.  Apparently he only received 8 yellow cards his whole career too. Surely that's bollocks.

I don’t think anyone would argue against the fact that VVD has met or exceeded the high expectations set for him. He brings a calmness and solidness into our defence which has allowed those around him to focus on doing their jobs well too.

It’s time the goal gods gave him a goal and hopefully he gets one today.

King was quality and seemed like him and Diaby at Arsenal had an insane knack of always being fit just in time to face us, put in a great performance, then be back injured straight after

Van Dijk is an incredibly gifted centre back and i'm delighted Gomez has him to learn from as they are very similar in playing style.

You know how in action films, cool guys never look at the explosion? Well it's the same concept in football, cool guys don't look at the goal when they've done an assist.

I don't think I've seen such a commanding centre half since Hyypia

He's obviously been watching a few Xabi Alonso long range passing vids on YouTube too

Thought he looked a bit tired at the game against PSG and could be rested for this game. Saw that he could hardly leap.

But what a great assist! VVD for no.10 from now on.

Apart from what an incredible player he is we need players who aren’t soft and he’s the first to front opposition who are trying to cause shit. Put Neymar right in his place last match and done the same with richarlison today.

Voting is in February, right? Unless some like Aguero pulls way ahead as top scorer or has a month like Suarez did in December 13/14 think it's going to be between him and Sterling.

Checking the odds and Silva and Hazard the top 2?
