I think it's really harsh to write him off given how stop start his career has been with us. When he has been fit and has had rhythm, he has offered something different to all of our midfielders.
You can't blame the guy for being rusty based on 10-20 min appearances here and there, the odd start in a game, maybe a cup start in a weakened Liverpool side.
The biggest question for me is if we can give him the sustained period he is going to need in the side to get back to the level he was at. Looking at his best form before the big injury, our midfield was quite limited. Since then we have brought in Fabinho, Keita, Tiago and Curtis Jones has established himself as a first team choice. I think a lot will depend on him too, what he wants and feels is best for his career. He might be looking at someone like Lingard and wondering what it would be like to drop a level and play regularly again. Or his mate Jack, whose career looks to have peaked at 29.
He has always given us everything - I think he deserves a bit more respect to be honest.
