Man City basically showed you what you have to do in order to go from where Everton are now to where City are now.  It took them five years and half a billion quid, plus several managers.  The scale of the gap they need to bridge is staggering and ultimately impossible as things stand.  Simply bridging the gap to us is barely possible right now.

and a hell of a lot more, they spent close on half a billion on transfer fees in their first 3 seasons after winning the lottery.  To attract those players to play for a club like City at that time they will have been paying them an insane amount of wages too. And of course this was just at the start of the madness with fees - which CIty played a huge part in causing.

Now those figures are even more inflated. We saw where Everton got by outspending LFC, Spurs and Arsenal in the last couple years. And now they have few saleable assets either. Their squad is all over the place. Sure a new coach could get a lot more out of players than Allardyce could ever get, but they are still have some major gaps to fill. And a lot of dead wood to get rid of.

Agree with all that.

The level of delusion amongst their fans is what kills them every time. Even people you'd expect to be a bit more rational [or, more accurately, less irrational] succumb to it. Derek Mountfield was on Radio Merseyside last night and he's a nice guy, but blindsided about their place in the footballing world. Kevin Ratcliffe also said yesterday that he thinks lack of European football will hamper them, saying he'd love Simeone but there's no chance because they don't have Champions League to offer. Er, Kevin, the reasons Simeone would laugh in your face are far wider than not being in the CL (which itself is just a symptom of the whole host of issues at Everton that mean a proven, top quality coach wouldn't go there).

And then I had the misfortune to hear the BBC's Phil McNulty blowing smoke up their arses this morning - at one point he was saying Rafa, whilst a quality manager, wouldn't be accepted by Everton for saying 'what he said' - both McNumpty and the interviewer were skirting around the 'small club' jibe and even when they did say the actual phrase, did so in a low voice. FFS, they ARE a small club in comparison to the 'Big 6'. A small, parochial club with little reach beyond Merseyside and North Wales.

As you and others have pointed out, if they could just stop thinking they're on a par with their much more illustrious neighbours and throwing everything at trying to get one over on us, they could build something. Instead, their obsession handicaps them every step - all their thinking is about the quick fix, the shot of heroin to get them 'up there' now, the headline/signing/announcement to sock it to the RS, the desperation to be relevant and noticed.

PS - what is making me chuckle is that, now Fireman Sam and Walsh have gone and Moshi-la is strutting about, their fans are getting chippy once again, coming out fighting. The current meme is along the lines of "Sick of hearing fans of other clubs saying we should just be happy with 8th... we should be higher up than that - and not playing awful football". I've no real animosity toward them (I've a lot of mates I grew up with who are blues and there was never a hatred back then) but their venom towards us and delusion just makes me want their next manager to be an absolute car crash. With a red Xmas tree.

Yes, I'm with you there. It's not just the fans, is it? Ex-players and most who are close to the club just don't seem to understand just how low Everton's stock is in the modern era. They say we live in the past, by my god, the last time Everton were a respected club was long ago in the last century. They have done nothing of real note for a long, long time. The world has long since moved on, football has moved on. Everton simply do not hold anything like the prestige they had all those decades ago, but for some bizarre reason, those attached to the club seem to think they are footballing royalty or something. Such staggering lack of self-awareness strikes me as rather sad, to be honest. They are like an old porn star who can't get wood anymore but still thinks he's got it going on while everyone else sniggers behind his back.

I've never really had any animosity towards them either. Why would I? They've very rarely been a real threat to us on the pitch other than a few short years in the 80s. I've lived with, been to school, work and college with blues. My nextdoor neighbour is a blue. We live amongst each other and are cut from the same cloth. Liverpool and Everton fans who live on Merseyside are so interlinked that hatred between our fanbases is not only bizarre, but utterly stupid.

I do like a bit of schadenfreude at their expense, but it's never sinister, and my only real dislike about them is my distaste at their lunatic fringe and the divisive bile they spew out. I don't like the way those types have destroyed the derby either. Thing with hate is that we basically hate what we fear. Their hate betrays the fact that they fear LFC so, so much. Sad really.

The Hicks and Gillette analogy is very good.

Moshiri talks the same level of random bullshit as Gillette, remember "Roffa can have Snoopp Doogy Dogg if he wants" and compare and contrast Moshi's racist ramblings about Lukaku's Ma going on a voodoo pilgrimage.

Frightening levels of stupidity allied with verbal diarrhoea. The omens aren't great for them.

I’ll think you’ll find that was Snoogy Doogy!

Well clearly City have spent a lot more since buying securing their "elite" place at the PL and CL tables, and there's no way in hell Everton could support even a quarter of what City have managed over the past 10 years.  As you say, the results of them outspending us, Spurs and Arsenal are clear to see.

I'd say what assets they do have will grant them a minimal return.  Whoever they get rid of they're going to take a big loss.  Their position is a lot more vulnerable than they realise.  They should be investing in a cohesive team and a manager with a gameplan.  Survival next year is what they should be looking at as they recover their financial strength for another push two or three years down the line.  But if they go hell's bells again like they did last summer and buy randomly with no plan I can honestly see them going down - if not next season then certainly the season after.

To give an indication of our intent over the last 10 years we've signed the following top quality/world class goal scorers;

Torres, Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge, Coutinho, Firmino, Mane, Salah. They signed Lukaku.

No wonder we score goals, and they no longer do.

Staying at Shakhtar, must not think he has the ability to come to the Premier League. Bullet dodged.

His choices would be Everton or West Ham, or back in the CL with Shakhtar where he can continue to build his rep till a good club from one of the big leagues comes along. Sounds like a sensible bloke to me!

I think it's probably the same as Moore for us. He has taken them as far as he can.

Of course being Everton, their approach to every problem is mindless aggression, booing and trying to hit it with your own child. Thus how they approach the need for someone with more financial clout than the local guy who loves the club owner looked every different :D

To be fair, the mighty Everton who finished bottom of their EL group is a far more attractive prospect than some Ukrainian rubbish who have won the Europa League, been in another semi-final and also been in the knockout stages of the CL four times, all in the last decade.

Probably not, and I doubt either are stupid enough to believe they are bigger and better than their neighbours as well. I don't think they possess the kind of supreme, unwarranted arrogance that so many Evertonians seem to have.

Ah, but Everton see themselves as some kind of Real Madrid royalty who just happen to have fallen on hard times.

It's the legend/myth that they were once successful that drives their thinking now.  Even though smaller clubs than them have won trophies over the past 30 years (but their supporters still know their clubs are relatively small).

1860 Munich are Everton but about 20 years in the future. Have won the German Cup twice, last in 1964. Bundesliga Champions in 64/65 as well as Cup Winners Cup runners up. League runners up in 1966/67. Were relegated to the Bundesliga2 in 2004/05. Spent about 12 years there until they hit major financial problems and got bounced out of the league structure.

Being nice gets you absolutely fvcking nowhere, sadly.
Ours heads are falling off over the 250m Salah bid from the nice club who definitely
  • don't dive (Niasse first player retrospectively banned for diving),
  • don't cheat (Calvert-Lewin, how many penalties won this season with his jump into the defender and fall over trick?), and
  • aren't shitbags (Holgate? The homophobic comments, the pushing Firmino into the crowd? Williams starting a fight with the Lyon keeper? Your own fans throwing punches at the players? The booing? Not shitbags? OK)
  • don't waste money (Sigurdsson, Pickford, Keane, Klaassan, Bolasie, Sandros wages?)
  • supporter disenfranchising - Your last manager was Fat Sam. Can you disenfranchise a fanbase any more than that?

I just want everton to be great again. These smug condescending red bastrds need knocking down a peg or three. But more importantly, I just want our kids (and plenty of grown ups!) to understand what everton fc is again.

I think the problem is that everyone DOES understand what Everton FC is. It couldn't be more clear. Except to the deluded few who frequent their forums.

Nail, head hit - My lad is 10, he plays at being an Evertonian - He LOVES going don't get me wrong, but it is hard for kids today especially wools when the side is not winning!

The Fifa generation don't really have a clue truth be told - but you are 100% correct Everton used to have respect and be feared and as we have seen in recent times we have become well a bit of a laughing stock (more than I actually thought as well truth be told)... For us older Evertonians (I am 45 mate) it is tough to swallow - Jesus old farts like Pops (kidding Pops) it must be 10 x worse!

Outside of the North West Everton are regarded less than Leicester by kids and Adults alike these days - VERY hard to swallow - Poor Mo next to me got it both barrels yesterday when he tried to give it loads about Chelsea over Everton!

Just pure gold that. :D

Its the best week I've had re Everton for a few years mate, I just think that number thrown around about 5-10 years ago would seem massive, its not that big now. It'll get us another 2/3 mid range players like the ones we have. If they are the right ones we'll be sound.

It's funny because it's true. Their best week in years and they lost 3-1 to West Ham, finish 8th, sacked their manager and watch us prepare for a CL Final against Real Madrid. And that is a good week. The BEST week :D Because of maybes. Maybe they get a good manager this time. Maybe they get a good owner this time. Maybe they buy the right players this time. In a world of unknowns they can still believe maybe this will be the time it all lines up for them. Until it doesn't. Because they are Everton.

Yeah see the 250million is to see our heads roll off. The pace goals don't really factor in to the discussion

So where are these Usmanov and 250 million pound delusions coming from?

Hasn't he been a part-owner of Arsenal for a decade and Arsenal are one of the most frugal and profitable teams in PL.  Sure he has criticized the board for not showing enough ambition but at the same time, he has done fuck all himself. If he really wanted he could become the majority shareholder for Arsenal and do what Roman did. Yet he is just waiting to take over a no-mark club that is more well-known cuckoo clocks than winning trophies so that he can spend his money?

Get tae fuck, where is that from?

I have a hard time separating the parody Fat Sam twitter account and what you posted above.

Saw some deluded clown on Twitter compare their sacking of Fat Sam to that of us sacking Hodgson.  There is no more deluded fanbase. They are crackers.

The best time of the season for them is always off-season year after year,a time of hope and hubris.

When the games start rolling it's all downhill from there on except for the days when we lose a match.

Now now, don't be such an doubting Thomas. Remember, when Hodgson left Dalglish took over. Now Allardyce is gone, Everton too could look to a famous ex-player to run the club...

If that poster is talking about what Everton USED to be I kinda sorta get it.  Compared to what they are now - a snivelling, snide gang of bitter no mark wotsits - I'd be nostalgic for the good old days too.

But it always comes back to the same thing - that it's somehow OUR fault that they are what they are.  Got nothing to do with any of the decisions their board made.

We don't get this crap from Arsenal.  They'd won the same number of titles as Everton at that point in the 80s, and they arguably suffered as much under the ban as Everton did, missing out on Europe.  And United only had seven titles at that time.  So why is those two clubs are still near the summit?

Oh yeah - because they've been run better.  And you only have to look at their recent history to see what happens when a club isn't run well.  Or, for that matter, West Ham, Newcastle, Sunderland, Portsmouth, Leeds and Blackburn.  Or us under Moores, Parry and the cancers.

Everton are a two bit operation run by rank amateurs.  That's the reason they're in the hole they're in.  And that hole will only get bigger.
