We need a Coronavirus Positivity thread to share stories like this. :)

I echo that sentiment. So here it is - a thread where we can share stories from around the world about humanity coming together and cashing in the empathy, connection, care and support currency that we often think might have crashed and vanished for good.

There are lots of Bad News Scare Stories out there, fake news, etc - even today a rumour hit that Tallinn was about to be closed off by concrete barriers on the roads and the National Guard taking up arms to prevent traffic coming in or out of the city - a rumour thankfully very swiftly discredited by the Estonian Foreign Ministry!

Other examples of positivity I've seen so far include Italians serenading each other on their balconies, or the Italian Air Force doing a multi-coloured fly-by with Nessum Dorme as the soundtrack........so please, add whatever you've got that detracts from the doomsday naysaying negative media out there, something to remind us we are HUMAN.  :-*

Starting off with a lovely story from King Kenny 7 :D Pay it forward indeed.....

I've been down for a week with very severe tonsillitis, went to the doctors this morning to find out if a second prescription was needed. . . . The surgery was on lockdown and through the glass door the receptionist said I had to ring.

So I rang and got through to the automated on hold system and it was 28 mins before I got to speak to the girl I had been talking to at the door, she took a minute (I presume she spoke to the GP) and then instructed me to collect the script this afternoon.

Through the glass door you could see all the staff were wearing masks but on the phone they sounded cheery enough.

It seemed so weird like a Monty Python sketch but brought me down to earth with a bump as this is the way things are heading.

On the way home I decided to call into a local Home Bargains store and picked up a few things and was retelling my experience to the girl on the till, after bagging my stuff I went to pay and only then realised I had not brought my wallet (as I only expected a quick visit to the local Gp). I was mortified and apologized and said I would have to leave the items.

A voice comes from behind and says "I've got it covered" and the guy next in the queue insists on paying for my £21.50 shop - I said no it was ok but he insisted.

I waited outside the store and asked him for his phone number so I could repay him but he said "No, with all this stuff going on at the moment it makes me feel better to do something nice".

You could have knocked me down with the proverbial feather.

What a strange morning it has been!

And yes there are a few selfish people out there but let my little experience today show that there are still decent people about - Pay it Forward folks.  :)

Get well soon mate :wave

the Italian Air Force doing a multi-coloured fly-by with Nessum Dorme as the soundtrack.

I'm all for positivity, but has it been confirmed anywhere that that actually happened as in during the past few days and for the reasons people are saying? The Frecce Tricolori have been performing that trick for years, call me cynical but I think that video going around is from an old air show and someone has cut it and put on social media where the masses have jumped all over.

(don't know how to embed)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q15lhS16ZHQ

edit, pretty sure its 'fake' as such. below is from an airshow on 15th September 2019, looks to be the same background, boats on the water, smoke / clouds etc albeit a different angle.

Furry nuff - was just an example someone showed - so yeah probably best to stick with verifiable accounts or personal testimony like King Kenny 7's anecdote - no reason to doubt anyone detailing their own experiences.

(I just compared your post to the version I've seen - definitely different timing, different cloud formations, different location...but your point isn't necessarily disproven, could still be 'fake news' so to speak...)

wasn't a shot at you by any means, seen it so many times on social media over the last few days and people talking about it when it didn't actually happen, usual social media BS!

Coronavirus: Edinburgh shop supplies free Covid-19 ‘survival’ packs to those in need
Shop hands out hundreds of coronavirus packs to local elderly and infirm

A shop owner in northwest Edinburgh has forked out thousands of pounds in an effort to ensure his elderly and infirm customers have free access to life’s essentials during the coronavirus outbreak.

Zahid Iqbal, who runs Day-Today convenience store at Drylaw Shopping Centre, has been run off his feet handing out the free survival packs, which include one toilet roll, an anti-bacterial handwash, a packet of pocket tissues and one packet of paracetamol.

The goodwill gesture is open to anyone over the age of 65 and those with mobility issues facing a lengthy period of self-isolation.

Anyone unable to pick up their ‘survival’ pack can even have it delivered to their house for free by calling the shop.

Mr Iqbal, 34, says the idea came to him while accompanying his parents to a local supermarket, where they encountered a shocking number of empty shelves.

He said: “All the youngsters are picking stuff up and the older ones are being left out.

“We have lots of customers from the local care homes, as well as disabled customers, who can’t get hand sanitisers, loo rolls or anything at all.

“We just want to set a good example in this world.”

The Drylaw independent’s act of philanthropy follows a similar initiative at another Day-Today branded shop in Falkirk, which has also been handing out free essentials to those in need during the virus spread.

The panic buying of goods in Edinburgh and around the world has seen supermarket shelves empty at an unprecedented rate in recent weeks as the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise.

The shop has handed out an incredible 550 of the packs in just 24 hours after a social media post advertising the fact went viral.

Mr Iqbal said the shop's Facebook page has been viewed more than 800,000 times after it was shared by the popular online community group TRIM and Friends of West Pilton.

However, young proprietor, whose family-run store has served the local community for more than 15 years, admits Day-Today has been inundated with coronavirus pack requests and that the venture has come at great financial cost.

With each of the packs costing between 4 and 5 pounds to make, he revealed the initiative has already cost his business a whopping £5000.

But Zahid insists his loyal customers are worth every penny during these times of uncertainty.

He said: “Money can be made in the future… Right now, we need to do our part for the community.

“We want to help out for as long as we can manage and everybody needs to be doing their bit.

“If we run out of toilet rolls then the next thing we want to do is pasta. If there’s a lockdown people need to be able to look after themselves.

“The satisfaction you get helping people out is just amazing.”

Mr Iqbal added that currently the shop was refusing to take donations, but said Day-Today may consider it in the future depending on how things turn out.

Seems like the manager of Iceland Old Swan has kick started his company into opening up just for elderly folk as a National thing.
Old people get first dibs for the first 2 hrs of trading.
Listening to him, he said it is because the regular old folk pop in on a daily basis for bread and milk etc. And don’t do a weekly shop so it’s to help them

As offered in the other thread if anyone needs me to check in on or do errands for their loved ones in my area I'm more than happy to do so.

I'm in the Wath-Upon-Dearne area of south Yorkshire so anywhere in the Barnsley, Rotherham, north Sheffield or west of Doncaster area.

LVMH, maker of Louis Vuitton, is opening its facilities to create more free hand sanitizers.
By Jacqueline Laurean Yates
March 16, 2020, 12:19 PM

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus, officially named COVID-19, has resulted in a global crisis, and while many companies have been forced to close, others are finding ways to help the cause through their resources.

On Sunday, the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, parent company to brands such as Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Christian Dior, and more, released a statement announcing that the company is now preparing production sites to manufacture substantial quantities of hydroalcoholic gel to be provided to public authorities given the risk of shortage.

The statement also mentioned that these gels will also be delivered free of charge to French health authorities.

"Through this initiative, LVMH intends to help address the risk of lack of product in France and enable a greater number of people to continue to take the right action protect themselves from the spread of the virus," the statement reads. "LVMH will continue to honour this commitment for as long as necessary, in connection with the French health authorities."

France, like many other places around the world, has closed non-essential retail stores and public encouraged social distancing during this ongoing outbreak.

Anyway, back on track.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51915723

The word "caremongering" did not exist on the morning of Friday 13 March. Yet just three days later what started as a way to help vulnerable people in Toronto has turned into a movement spreading fast across Canada.

More than 35 Facebook groups have been set up in 72 hours to serve communities in places including Ottawa, Halifax and Annapolis County in Nova Scotia, with more than 30,000 members between them.

People are joining the groups to offer help to others within their communities, particularly those who are more at-risk of health complications related to coronavirus.

The pandemic has led to acts of kindness around the world, from delivering soup to the elderly in the UK to an exercise class held for quarantined residents on their balconies in Spain.

But in Canada, a country whose inhabitants are stereotyped in the media as kind to a fault, helping others has become an organised movement called "caremongering"............

My mrs has been ill since Sunday, I tried to get a thermometer yesterday from a number of places = No chance. Considering we have so few cases of the virus in Liverpool, where are all the thermometers? Obviously bought by people who MAY fucking them.

I`ve also got 3 kids and we were down to 3 toilet rolls this morning (the 4 women in my home go through a roll a day) so I went to Tescos at 7am and there was fuck all! Again, people stockpiling shit roll and leaving me and my kids in the shit. Literally!

I picked up a few other bits and told the women on the till about my toilet roll predicament and she whipped out a 9 pack from under the till and told me she was keeping them for someone who really needed them.

What an angel  :D
Which Tesco was this?

Hope your misses gets well soon and you all stay safe, John! :wave

Ultras groups in Germany are starting to rally together, they are making themselves available in their communities to go and shop and run errands for people considered most at risk. So far VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund groups have made arrangments to help people who need it.

Also VfB Stuttgart ultras are also raising funds for an Italian hospital.

I gave away some alcohol gels and wipes yesterday to someone who has just had major surgery.

I’m also sending a fellow asthma sufferers some paracetamol as they can’t find any and they can’t use ibuprofen.

We can all do a bit. And If we do, then that will help a lot of people.
We aren't walking through the storm now - we are the storm.

Ultras here in Austria (Sturm Graz, Austria Lustenau who are playing in the 2nd division) have put up huge banners thanking people working in hospitals and supermarkets for their effort.

I also have a small story from my own region here in Austria. Vorarlberg is a small state all the way in the west next to the Swiss and German border and a local bakery-chain is offering free coffee to policemen, paramedics and other helpers in uniform for their efforts...

The world's strongest gin is being turned into hand sanitizer.

Scots distillery creates sanitiser gel to help charities and front line services after being shocked to discover they are running low

A Scottish distiller who is using their gin stocks to make hand sanitiser is calling on people to help their local charities and frontline services after being shocked by the lack of availability of the vital product.

Mike Bain of Deeside Distillery in Banchory explained that his team had discovered that a lot of local schools, nurseries and care homes do not have access to a supply of hand sanitisers or cleaning gels, and decided to try and help in any way they could.

Mike, who founded the distillery in 2017, said that they decided to use their gin to create batches of hand sanitiser to help local charities, such as foodbanks, and front line services including care firms and GPs – who were struggling to source any of the hand cleaning products due to the current panic buying and profiteering going on around the country over coronavirus.

“We made the world’s strongest gin at 87% abv to be a solid base for hand sanitiser. Worryingly, it took us nearly a week just to source the ingredients we needed for creating it.

“We managed to get 4,000 50ml dispenser bottles for the sanitiser – the last lot from the company which has demand from all over the world – and 200 litres of aloe vera from a company that supplies the equine industry.

“We then set out to make it for the people that need it most, we don’t want to make any money from this, we are only charging private companies to cover the cost and duty. We’ve literally had to ask people to come to the distillery and we are mixing and hand blending the new recipe to order – filling old milk cartons and plastic bottles for them.”

Mike explained that though they have been donating where they can, to their local foodbanks schools and some charities.

Two-thirds of the cost of some of the sanitiser is tax due to the fact the government still expect them to pay duty – something that he hopes HMRC will be able to do something about.

Mike’s now calling on other businesses to do what they can to help after speaking to fellow gin maker Martin Murray at Rock Rose and learning that the same lack of sanitiser availability was happening in the Thurso area.

“All week I have been speaking to people and it’s been eye-opening and sad. The people that will be on the front line – doctors, nurses, carers, pharmacy workers and local care homes, caring for our most vulnerable all unable to secure hand sanitiser.

“I would urge any companies or organisations that may shut offices to donate hand sanitisers to your local care homes or charities that look after the most vulnerable.

“If we all do a little we can make a big difference.”
