Over 12 months with the Desire and never really needed to root it but was getting rather annoyed at the lack of internal memory so just spent the last few days rooting my Desire and setting it up exactly how I want it and it's like a new phone again. Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 and SPB Shell 3D and it's like a new phone again. A dozen home screens and more if needed, plenty of internal memory and runs like a dream.
Hi, I have rooted the phone without any problems. When I download the zip file for Alpharev, and expand it, there is a file in the root of the folder, and another folder and zip folder. Which file do I put on the bootable cd? Many thanks.

You need to burn the alpharev.iso file, it's 24,744kb in size. Extract the .zip file and the alpharev.iso file should be there. Download MagicISO and install it, put a blank CD in drive, open MagicISO and browse and select the alpharev.iso and burn it to the disc.

You need to do the same to gparted-live-0.8.0-5.iso on another disc. This is in the gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip you need to download. This helps you to create a ext4 partition on the SD card so you can put all your apps on it.

All rooted now. I have flashed the MIUI Gingerbread ROM. First impressions it looks great!! I see you cannot remove the system icons from the screens. I take it it's best to put these into a folder out of the way? Is there anyway of adding more than 4 screens?

What other ROMs are people using? Thanks to Keithcun for all the help.

I use GoSMS and Dolphin HD, with the Go Launcher and some widgets to replace Sense.

Is there an app I can get, and pardon my ignorance, that I could get where it would search and collate articles from websites I choose it to, eg stuff from BBC, from guardian and from anywhere  else all in one handy place?

SE, I have the guardian app, it's great. Downloads the paper on my phone on a daily basis and I read the paper on my HTC, en route to work.

I use Springpad which allows you to add links, photos, notes. These are then accessible on PC, android, iphone and anywhere you have a web browser.

Yes. I did mine on Wednesday. Straight forward enough. Just remember to save your contacts, photos etc, as it wipes your sd card when you partition. I have been very impressed so far!! I used the guide linked on page 13 of this thread towards the bottom.  Good luck! :-)

Since rooting, which is welll worth the effort,  my ROM doesn't allow me to use Friendstream which I used to simultaneously post to Twitter and Facebook. Can anybody recommend an application to the job for me please. Thanks very much.

just take your time and double check everything as you go,  and you will be fine. I'm sure it's only the s-off section where you can brick your phone. All you need to do is leave the phone. You will be fine. Well worth it.

Yep, bought March 2010 I think, not long after they were released.

Here's the guide. It's a bit daunting at first, but I downloaded a few ROMs to try and ended up sticking with CM7 as it wasn't overloaded with stuff and I planned on using the SPB Shell 3D to run it. The only thing I didn't do was change the radio.

yeah it looks awesome, I really want one, they seem a touch expensive for me at the moment though, the cheapest I've found is about 32 a month on o2, would prefer something a little cheaper but I just can't see it happening :'( I'll just have to bite the bullet I suppose

Had it since the day it came out on 02. Fantastic phone, really love it, if you have any questions on it just drop me a PM, can send you photo's etc. Its really fast to load everything, so smooth the UI, the battery life I'm getting 2 days out of it; which I would suggest is a fantastic achievement; as I use it for about 200 texts a day, 2 hours on the phone a day, and a couple of hours browsing internet, taking photos watching films etc.

i agree with all this, im in the same boat, the screen is lovely, i bought a 16gb card for mine and loaded with a few 720p films/eps no bollocks converting or any of that, the phone is simply fantastic. i also had the desire s before this phone but the galaxy s2 pisses all over it.
