My reputation is going to take a hit if random guys start asking for me at the bar having only met me online  ;D

Hahah I've heard about your reputation in that pub to be fair! ;)

I think we should all go in on the same day dressed like qwegs and ask for him.

What a pub the fuckin Cali is.

The arl fellas have just started their trad / folk session . A local artist is hanging up her art . Two dogs running ' round playing with eacother. The Lancastrian bar maid is dead friendly too.

This is what pubs should be like !

I was a part of the people that got that up of it's arse in about 2009/10 I think but maybe a few years earlier . It had a proper community and squatty vibe about it at the time.

Is this the Mello Mello near Slater Street owned by one of the Barton's?

It's right on the corner of Slater Street and Parr Street. Turn right towards Wholstenhome Square. A few people I knew back then got the building by promising the landlord or council to take over the building and turn it into something and do up the property. The had a few places in that part of town. Another one is on Renshaw Street which is now cafe but not sure what happened to that one. It's just past 69a towards the Dispensary. Anyway when the Mello got buzzing with all kinds of stuff like workshops in many things , comedy nights , open mic nights , plays etc they started getting charged rent so had to start off a cafe and start selling alchohol. Thats what ruined it for me as bevvy heads started to come in. I think the rent just kept on going up and then..... the council or landlord nabbed it back . I havent been in there since all this happened so I don't really know what it's like now. Some really nice people were involved in the whole process of the Mello and I wish them all well.

Edit .

It felt like a little artistic hub was springing up in that part of town and most of them wern't from here . It was a lot a Spanish people involved and people from down South and others too and most of them students or students that had decided to.stay in in Liverpool as they knew it's a boss place. The council fucked it all up and moved in on it all and next thing you know.... we have the Baltic Triangle .

No, but that Mersey pub guide I linked sez:

Quote
This wonderful preserved Victorian multi-roomed pub has a slightly eccentric interior including a collection of old transistor radios suspended from the ceiling!
Peter Kavanagh took over the pub in the late 1890s and named it The Grapes. He became well known in the Liverpool area, serving as a councillor for many years, and was also responsible for a number of successful inventions. By the time of his death in 1950, his pub had become known as Peter Kavanagh's.
Grade II listed building.
Last visited February 2019.

.... so I dunno how the actual ale is  ;D

I havent been in there since all this happened so I don't really know what it's like now.

It's The Merchant now innit? Overpriced hipster shite. Although they do have a good takaway pizzeria which is I think a different business but still part of the same building and they let you eat inside, so it's alright for a quick pizza and a beer but not worth staying past that. More or less a fiver a pint and the music is always some minimalist/hipster/elevator bollocks

A request for help, for those with more local knowledge than me. My wife is organising her sister's hen do in Liverpool in May, and is looking for some recommendations. Does anyone have any tips for:

A brewery style place for good ales (think Magic Rock in Huddersfield if anyone has been there).
A decent bar with a dancefloor that isn't too clubby/pretentious / a bar with good live music.

My knowledge of the city is mostly limited to pubs around the ground ;D

Much appreciated all!

If you're after something like Magic Rock (which is great btw) then take a look at Love Lane Brewery. It's fairly similar.

There is also the old Cains Brewery (Baltic Triangle) which has now been turned into a load of individual units and there are a few craft pub types there. It's not that like Magic Rock but would be decent still.

Very odd choice. I thought the 'Theme Pub' had it's day in the 80s but then you've got the Peaky Blinders cash in joint in the Baltic Market so maybe they are making a come back.

I went in there with work over Christmas, if you're a fan of the show then it's worth popping in for a quick pint then get off after taking a few photos, although they did also have a singer on when I was there.

The bar area is set-up like The Nags Head pub, there is a bar hatch you can fall through, half a yellow 3 wheeler you can sit in, Del's bedroom, and their living room that you can sit in.

Dead crafty near Ship and Mitre.

Also Black Lodge Brewery, a little more out of the way in the Baltic, but it's great in there.

It's sound yeah. Not the cheapest for ale (but then not so many places are these days), but its a nice little venue space in the basement if you are looking for an intimate gig. Little bit dingy but sound. Upstairs is nice and the food is decent as well.

My mates said the name an id never heard of it but he’s having a gig there and I’m meant to be going with my mates in the next couple of months. Looked it up an the pics seem decent. Like the sort of place I like for small intimate gigs

After bragging on Twitter just the other week about how they never put their prices up (and erm they did last year just before the final), two pints in La’go have gone up from £4.20 to £5.80 overnight. The Manchesterification of town continues.

Ouch. That’s a fucking astronomical price rise to a ridiculous price for a pint.

Made the mistake of taking someone's advice and popping in to the Albert on Lark Lane a couple of months ago. Hadn't been there for a couple of years, was about 3.70 for a pint of Stella then. This time, no Stella anymore. Ok, I'll have a Red Stripe. £4.75!!!  And the little pie shop across the road has gone. It's not safe to drink anywhere anymore.

No sight of any of the regulars last night for the match so it's probably already happened. They got new owners a few months back and all of a sudden it was naff branding and try-hard "scouse" slogans everywhere and eyebrows were raised then. I don't know anyone who would pay that here, Would certainly do an about turn if someone told me £5.70 for a pint.

Agreed. I’d only ever be having 1 in there, and never again, if I went in and found that was the price in the first round.
