Florent Sinama-Pongolle
« on: October 9, 2008, 05:29:40 pm »
Anyone have the full interview?

PONGOLLE EAGER FOR REDS REUNION
Joe Curran 09 October 2008

Florent Sinama-Pongolle has admitted Atletico Madrid's forthcoming clash with Liverpool will be the biggest match of his career.

The former Liverpool striker has found the net four times in six appearances for Atletico since signing from Recreativo in July, and Pongolle is hoping to he can continue his impressive form against Liverpool in the Champions League in two weeks time.

"For me it's the biggest game in my career," Pongolle told LFC magazine.

"It's going to be very, very hard, but I can't wait to go back to Anfield - it’s something special."

With both teams currently level on points in Group D, the match at the Estadio Vincente Calderon could determine who finishes top of the group, but Pongolle knows how difficult it will be to get a result against a resurgent Reds team.

"We are both two really good teams, but Liverpool have experience over us and are favourites because they are always in the competition.

"But I think this season, Atletico Madrid has a very good team and we have started well and beaten good teams like Schalke, so a lot of teams wouldn't like to play us."

The French striker has blossomed in la Liga since his three-year stint at Anfield and is excited about returning to Anfield for the return match in November.

"Since I left, I have only been back to Anfield once. It was for the semi-final of the Champions League against Chelsea in 2007.

"I invited four players with me from Recreativo. What a game! I was jumping in the air and falling over people when Dirk Kuyt scored the winning penalty.

"I went out with all of the players after the game to celebrate as well. All of the Recre players couldn’t believe what it was like. There’s no atmosphere in the world like it at Anfield.

"It was a good three years for me even though I didn’t play as much as I would have liked.

"I had a very good atmosphere with the fans and I know a lot of them wanted me to get a chance.

"I won't forget that because they were special to me and its only right that I wouldn't celebrate.

"Every player who has played there with a good relationship with the supporters would say exactly the same.

"It's a really special game. When Torres and Pepe come back to the Calderon, it will be really special for them and when me and Luis Garcia go back to Anfield, it will be special for us.

"The tie has everything and I can't wait. I would say it is probably the biggest game of my career."

Lolzies. More chance of a wank off the pope than beating United, I'm afraid. It is beyond Benitez, apart from when they were at their lowest ebb, when we knocked them out of the FA Cup. They certainly aren't anywhere near there now.

So 5 tickets went there, seemingly effortless.

How many ex players do we have? Seems unjust to me.

Yeah, I'm sure he was up bright and early phoning the TO at half 8 in the morning to get sorted.

Edit- just read it back and maybe the point I'm making isn't clear... Pongolle wouldn't have gotten tickets from the route the fan do, he probably got sorted by a player or something, ie, tickets none of us lot would have been able to get at anyway. So fair play?

If the club can't even find a few tickets for ex-players, it's a sad state of affairs.

Also, they could have been supplied from any of the current players' allocations.

I think his failure to make it at Liverpool was down to the fact that physically he just wasn´t there yet, and that he was a Houlllier player, Rafa never really rated him as part of our future. And most of us agreed with Rafa at the time if I remember correctly. This year he has really bulked up and is looking like a real footballer, what we expected from him when he was first brought to Liverpool. If he had the physical presence he does now a few years back I doubt he would have been moved on. Whatever hindsight is 20/20, he´s at Atletico and doing well so best of luck to him.

Goodbye & thank you Rafa. You've given us more than we ever had a right to expect from you and you stayed loyal and fought for us even when some of our own turned on you. I truly hope that you find somewhere with the support that you deserve & win everything in sight.

"It's a really special game. When Torres and Pepe come back to the Calderon, it will be really special for them and when me and Luis Garcia go back to Anfield, it will be special for us.

Excuse my ignorance but what connection does Pepe (I assume Pongolle is reffering to Reina) have with the Vicente Calderón Stadium?

Very talented player, but unfortunate weith injuries. I have seen this weeks LFC mag and he gives an excellent interview into his life at Anfield, and since he moved to Spain.

His goals against Olympiakos and Luton proved very significant in the end, although I doubt anyone had an idea at the time how significant they would ultimately be. My favourite moment though was against Arsenal at Anfield when he produced an amazing piece of skill to leave Vieria wondering where he'd gone.

A striker I wish we hadn't let go of. Same with Heskey.

We'd be in pretty good shape now with Torres, Keane, Heskey and Pongolle as the 4 strikers. Some nice variation there.
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a £1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

I really don't remember him ever being 'great' for us to be honest. He looked the more talented of the two "gems" but I agree with the comment about him bulking up, although he always seemed to have a tenacity about him when he was here. Sometimes players just need a fresh change and that's obviously been the case with Pongolle.
It's wonderful, it's marvellous, it's 3-3

When he did get a start with us or came on as sub he typically produced the goods in nearly every second game for us. Not bad considering he was probably only going to get better the more minutes he played...just never got those minutes. Instead we threw our hat into the ring with Zenden, Kewell, Bellamy & Co out wide which in hindsight is easy to say was a mistake.

Still hindsight should aso have told us Pongolle was the best young player we had seen since Owen thus deserved a chance, which he never got, ie here is a spot on the bench in every game or a start every 2 - 3 games at least. Easier said that done I guess as we had guys banging in the goals / creating assists for us at the time ;)

FloPo was great in Europe, but not quick enough to use his style effectively in the League.

He's better off in La Liga like Morientes.

He gave us some good memories and deserves a cheer when he returns.
