Hillsborough campaigner Phil Scraton refuses OBE

No doubt there will be debate about this in the media, but if ever a man spoke from a position of principle then the Prof. does.
His work helped to expose the biggest establishment cover up ever, and he has now refused to accept the praise and award from said establishment.

I didn't think this man could give more for the cause or be more wholehearted in his efforts. A truly amazing guy!

You often have people who are cosied up to the media and establishment, who know a gong like this is incoming, who then use it for publicity to make some phoney attempt at being 'authentic'. This is anything but.

A principled man, following his principles. Making a principled point, simultaneously promoting the cause, and causing no fuss with it. Hugely deserving of respect before this. Hugely deserving now

The man deserves honour and recognition beyond anything our establishment or indeed nation can bestow on him. He pursued his cause with class & dedication in a selfless manner rarely witnessed and not certainly by someone on a mission for the City of Liverpool and its friends.

A credit to humanity is Phil Scraton.

Doesn't need the "recognition" of any gong from Buck House or anywhere else.

We the ordinary people salute you Dr. Phil - and I am certain sure that's in every possible way totally sufficient for this man or else I'm a terribly bad judge of humanity. (And I rarely am)

Oh it's been suggested on the bbc news just now that it's because obe includes the word empire. So maybe slightly different

Yes he said that but the refusal and his Hillsborough work forms who he is, the parts of a principled man. I wouldn't take their gongs either for the same reasons as him, all his reasons.

There's also quotes which point to the fact that it is awarded by the same establishment that tried to cover it all up and so he could never accept on those grounds.

A man of honour unlike the corrupt 'honours' system. An OBE is a middling rank, typical of an establishment that would rather give knighthoods to dodgy bankers and ennoblement to people like Andrew Lloyd Weber. Cameron even gave an OBE to his wife's stylist!
