Welcome. Definitely a stop gap until Klopp has a chance to put together a squad he wants.

Hope he does the job as backup CB.

5th choice CB, hopefully do a job, and fingers crossed he doesn't have to play more than a couple times

Says a lot really, Southampton were glad to see the back of him. Don't understand this at all.

It's cover. Why is it so hard to understand?
No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

What don't you get?

Sakho - out and a bit injury prone
Lovern - out
Skrtel - out

Oh 3 main 3 CB's are out so we need COVER!

Klopp has said since he came in that he will give the current players a chance. So spending 15m plus on a CB isn't going to happen yet.

He is here to proved cover and hopefully impress to get a full time deal.

He is basically a Gomez replacement as 5th choice CB for rest of the season .

I doubt we could have signed a better CB on loan in such s short period particularly with experience and decent injury record

Based on what?
Not watching him play, clearly.

Anyway as others have said it'll do until the end of the seaon, we desperately needed some cover.

That says more about you than about the signing. The number of loan signings available instantly with Premier League experience is very small. This is a signing made under extreme time pressure - and it is pragmatic. You cannot read much more than he was the best available with out a long term commitment.

Still he has got a last opportunity at a big club, and it is up to him to grab it...

Fair enough.

It's cover. Why is it so hard to understand?
Because he's not even average. I've seen the guy plenty and to be honest we'd have been better off giving an academy lad a go. Relegated in 2 consecutive seasons as well.

Not even having a go at him that's just how I see it. Real panic signing this.

He brings experience to the defence and won't be playing that many games. This could be a shrewd move by Klopp, we'll just have to wait and  find out.

Pretty much this.

I mean how thick can people be? We're down to bare bones at the back at the minute. I've seen someone say that we'll have 'all our center backs return in like 2 weeks' but how many injuries have they had combined this season already? More injuries will happen - Toure can barely finish a game and Ilori is a long way off match fitness.

Welcome, Steven.

Underwhelming but we really don't have much of a choice. Extra body to cover for injuries and provide competition at the back. not much to lose if only a loan.

It's cover. Why is it so hard to understand?
Because, you know, we might actually have to rely on him at some point the way we're going. Reminds me of "Well, Bogdan's only cover, why waste money on a decent back up who'll never play?"

I understand that this is a short term thing done in a hurry but by the sounds of things we've got Kolo back, Sakho back, Ilori is here, Lucas can play there, Can can play there (I actually think he's better there), it seems a strange one to me. The ideal scenario is that we never have to play him but why he would come and join us and waste half a season of his career on the sidelines doesn't exactly make the most sense.

It's really not that difficult to understand. We either play Lucas at centre back and hope he doesn't get injured too or we bring in a centre back with prem experience on loan for half a season to boost our numbers at the back. I know which option I prefer. It's not like we're gonna get Hummels or Thiago Silva on loan for 6 months is it?

At all? If everyone was fit I'm sure it wouldn't have happened. But given the almost unprecedented level of injuries does it not make sense to get an extra body in for immediate needs plus cover for the rest of the season.

When you look at who is available to move right now and has at least some knowledge of this League it's not a big pool.

He might never play for us, he might only start a couple of games so as not to rush Salvo or Lovren back before they're quite ready.

Its.A.Short.Term.Loan.

You know like 6 months, until the manager can find someone better on a permanent basis.

What's so hard to understand. We're not giving him a 4 year 60m contract. It's 6 bloody months because we haven't got a 100% fit CB between us.

To be fair, I think the management will be better positioned than you to know whether an academy lad's worth giving a go to over someone who's no world beater, but has had a Premier League career.
I believe our best academy centre back is injured, and most  academy players don't even go on to have a League Two career, so it's far from a guarantee that one of them will be better than Caulker.

Strange. I'm much more positive about this than most of you.

He's a decent premier league centre back. Not great, but probably at least as good as Kolo these days. Very much in the 'it works' category.

Plus, if things go well and his hamstrings don't explode, he's young enough that it might be worth making permanent. Remember, this is a kid who was talked about as 'future England centre back' not long ago. And while that talk might have died down, those sorts of player (young starlets that need a second chance) are basically what Liverpool does these days. See: Coutinho, Sturridge, Sakho, etc. PS. All those examples are prime for 'if it didn't work with team X, doesn't mean it won't work with Team L'. Hell, we've got a few of those in the other direction too.

So, while he's probably going to be short term stop-gap, let's be positive.
The opinions related above are in no way to be taken as anything more (or less) than those of an bored mind.

Three first choice CBs (Skrtel, Sakho, Lovren) injured, Toure hardly lasts a game anymore, Illori, young and not match fit,  Gomez, out for the season, under-21 CBs out injured too.... and we'll likely have three games per week for the next months, with the FA cup and Europe. We need someone who can just slot in, if he's shite, we'll buy someone better in the summer. We'd hardly be able to buy someone good now.

Short-term cover. Simple as that. Already has experience playing in the PL, so no adjustment period there. No cultural/linguistic adjustment period. He's got a pretty good injury record too. He's made some dreadful career choices (Cardiff, QPR) in order to get playing time. He was highly regarded earlier in his career. Those earlier moves might have stunted his development, but he's still only 24. And given Schalke were never likely to let Matip leave early, this is a logical move given our injury problems at the back.

Welcome Steven
