I’ve just watched back all of PMQs.  It was weird.  When Starmer looked at Johnson, Johnson caught his eye and suddenly looked away.  He did it atleast twice. He looked defeated.

I watch them all (either at the time if I have time or afterwards on catch up) and it was the strangest one I've ever seen.

Did you think the Tories were smashing their lines out as fast as possible just to get as many misdirections in as they could?

See this is where I think BoJo has cocked up today because he didn’t actually admit to breaking the rules (and the law) and apologise, he apologised for the hurt and perception. Now if he had admitted he broke the rules and apologised he could have possibly moved on the narrative and made the Grey report kind of moot. The fact he hasn’t means when the Grey report comes out everyone will be pouring over it again and he’ll be on the back foot where as if he actually apologised today whatever Grey comes out with he can just say “I have made a mistake and apologised, I’m focusing on blah, blah, blah”.

If that’s the case, while Johnson seems to be claiming I didn’t break the rules because I was in my own garden in my home, the fact a party was taking place in his home means he’s still broken the law?

The most important factor is whether or not the public perceive it as having broken rules that they observed.

I don’t think so if you’re not there? if you think about it anyone could have a party at a dwelling that isn’t their property, holiday lets, rentals etc etc That would go on beyond description.

It’s not just a dwelling thats being rented out for example, it’s his home where he lives.

I see they've shifted from apologising for it happening and not doing anything about it, to apologising for the "perception" and "idea" that people at number ten aren't following the rules.

Coincides with the reports of Johnson telling Tory MPs in the tearooms that he's not done anything wrong.  I'm old enough to remember when he said he was going to take full responsibility.

Shifting the blame and crying about how unfair it all is not taking any sort of responsibility at all.  It's not the behaviour of a leader.

I genuninely think he's the worst primeminister we've ever had.

Certainly in any of our lifetimes.  I'm sure there were some terrible ones in the 18th and 19th century when accountability was close to zero.  Anthony Eden is his closest peer in terms of incompetence and dishonesty.

His personal irresponsibility is what is looking like leading to his eventual downfall but he has also assembled and enabled a highly damaging cabinet and blown wind into the sails of the Tory cranks.  Our global reputation and standards of democracy have nosedived.

My wife is largely apolitical and didn't even bother voting in 2019 but she had an unprovoked rant yesterday after reading Johnson's response to the question about the party.

Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_prime_ministers_of_the_United_Kingdom.  it will be interesting to see how the tenures of Cameron, May and Johnson are viewed in the future, especially after the dust has settled on Brexit.  I suspect "weak and wobbly" May will come out on top of that dung heap.
