Really liking SRWare Iron. I'm only what you'd call a casual browser, so probably not getting the most out of it, but it's speed is excellent. Doesn't seem to love flash-based sites, which is a shame for iPlayer, but no gripes apart from that, and I get a lot less virus warnings now.
I think the problems are most likely flashplayer related, is it sucking memory and crashing, or not rendering/displaying properly?

I had Flashplayer/Iron/FF misery after cleaning Registry using CCleaner (***never fuk with the Registry unless absolutely necessary***).  It screwed up flash in FF too, Safari and IE were fine. It seems to have corrected itself eventually, some time after I'd reinstalled all browsers (wind back IE8 to IE7), uninstalled flashplayer and ActiveX controls...as well as running AdvancedSystemCare to fix Registry problems.

I spoke to a guy (who advised me to use ASC/Malwarebytes/AvastAnti-virus) about uninstalling. He said use the Windows Add-Remove option in Control Panel.  So I did that AND then the Adobe uninstaller to make absolutely certain flashplayer was gone.

I'm not exactly sure why it's working now, maybe the gods of windows were eventually appeased by the clean install rituals, it wasn't immediately, but after using Safari instead for a while.  [Safari seems much more robust than Iron/Chrome/FF in how it works with flashplayer. Apple hate Adobe flash.]

I'd switched to the latest beta version 10.1 of flashplayer because it won't hang the whole browser if flash crashes in one tab/window.

You can check your release version here:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html?promoid=GXVZC

If you're having problems with it, I'd download the current version (it's the release version of the beta I've been using):
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/

The current version is 10.1.53.64
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html#version

Follow instructions to uninstall what is currently installed:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

***restart pc*** to make abolutely sure all files and settings are completely removed, then install the version just downloaded.

I've no problems with iplayer or other flash objects now. e.g. iplayer dr who

I suspect a lot of browser-flashplayer problems are caused by legacy issues after updates to flash which didn't fully clear settings related to previous versions, or possibly updates to browsers.

I'll wait till after the game to update to the current release, and probably create a system restore point before I start the uninstall-install process.

Securia PSI alerted me to this (once I bothered to look at the critical warning) and I'm glad I updated Flashplayer the other day.  (I created a restore point, and loaded the new version on top, without uninstalling, no problems.)

All Version 10 Flashplayer releases, apart from the latest 10.1.53.64 have a critical vulnerability, allowing Cross Site Scripting, System access, which is known to be currently exploited.  (And Adobe AIR too)

I've been having a lot of problems with Adobe software and updates recently, especially putting incredibly funky viruses on my computer when I install updates.

Is there anything I can do as a layman to prevent this?
Adobe aren't likely the source of virus, perhaps the vulnerability. Update to latest Flashplayer and AIR. And whatever other software.

Ensure you have decent anti-virus, anti-spyware software and use a firewall. (I'm using Avast, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes).

An application like Securia PSI will help ensure you have applications up to date, or warn if any are known to be vulnerable.  (I've also installed AdvancedSystemControl, it has some antispyware features, but it's more for system tools.)

Do take the time to run them, and be careful of free football/porn/music if offered. :)

Since Chrome updated to version 6 and the extensions have got a lot better I've been using it as my main browser, and it seems to be better than Firefox so far. Much faster, and it eats less memory. Hasn't crashed once for me yet, either.

I'd recommend AdBlock Plus, it actually seems to block ads properly now instead of loading them first and then hiding them like it did previously in Chrome.

It's annoying that you don't get the "Properties" as a shell extension when right-clicking stuff. Other than that I think it's really good.

Perhaps it's just me, or because I use a Mac (and Linux), but I've never liked Firefox one bit (it runs like shite on OS X and Linux compared to Windows), and doesn't look right on either.

That said, Chrome has  a massive disadvantage re extensions: there's no way to prevent Chrome downloading stuff, only displaying it. That means ad blockers on Chrome still download all the ads; they're just not shown. Firefox (and Safari) extensions can actually prevent the browser from downloading crap you don't want to see.

I recently moved back to FF on PC. Chrome, whilst fast, just didn't have certain shell functions that I was used to with FF and the extensions don't even come close.

I've noticed a markable increase in performace from FF over the last few versions and have made the configuration tweeks that also make it run faster, infact I've been running tests and it's beating chrome in loading my most common visits (Engadget, RAWK, Gizmodo, Sky Sports, BBC News).

Yep. It works ok for about 5 mins then keeps crashing.Chrome auotmatically updates shockwave flash as well so you can't download an update as far as I know. I've switched to IE9 until they sort it out.

First off, what version of Chrome are you running? and the version of Flash within? You can check by first clicking on the spanner and "About Google Chrome". For the version of Flash, click spanner, tools, task manager, scroll down to the bottom for "Plug-in: Shockwave Flash".

Check that you've updated Chrome to the latest release. If you're still having problems, maybe go for the beta version which may have an updated version of Flash.

Seems to be an issue that a few people are suffering with Chrome + Flash

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=7d3f092af444f164&hl=en&start=120

Looks like it might be worth trying uninstalling Flash and Chrome and re-installing Chrome (if you haven't already). Either that or use the dev version (Chrome 11), instructions how to do that here.

Adobe have acknowledged the problem as a critical error that causes browsers to crash on all platforms and unwanted hosts taking over your machine. Anyway despite this they won't be releasing a fix until Monday.

THIS is the reason I'm quite happy without Flash on my iPad/iPhone. In theory, it's a great piece of software to have. In practice it's a piece of shit. If Adobe could remember how to write decent software, like they could when Photoshop still had competition, I'd probably be clamouring for Flash myself.

As things stand, Adobe has turned into a mini-Microsoft (of the 90's), turning out utter crap because users have no alternative.

The last few years have seen the Photoshop UI go from good to utter rubbish, while Flash remains the ridiculous resource hog and security hole it always was.

When you consider that Flash Player is responsible for the vast majority of Safari crashes (so much so that Apple felt in necessary to build a special sandbox for plugins just because of Flash), and that it reduces battery life by about 50% if all you do is browse, it's no wonder that Apple won't let it near their mobile devices. Don't forget that the whole time Adobe was bleating on about Apple not allowing Flash Player on the iPhone, they didn't actually have a version of Flash Player that would run on any smartphone, let alone iOS.

It's sad that Adobe has gone from producing incomparably good apps to buggy bloatware, but that's the sad state of things, and I sincerely hope that Flash dies a prompt death for this reason alone, and that the rest of Adobe follows suit if they can't remember how to do what made them great.

Can't believe people actually expect concrete answers to questions as vague as that.

Been having the same problems for some reason. I'd go in the photoshop thread one day and half the photos would load, I have to refresh about 10 times for everything to show. And somedays everything shows up no problem. So odd.

Check out Preferences->Under the Hood->Content Settings and check "Do not show images" is checked. Select Show All images in that case.
