Going to Stoke was a career killer for him. He was never going to make an abysmal team playing abysmal football look any better.

He was a good squad player for us and a star player for Swansea and Wales. His technique and ability to play short simple passes under pressure is amazing. At a team like Stoke even the real Xavi would have struggled. Let alone the Welsh one.

Looks like he's going to be used as an example and getting dropped from the squad today.

Always thought he was too good for Stoke and far too good for the championship, his career really seems to have stagnated

Sat bottom of the Championship, probably in the worst form of his life. He's been abysmal.

He was dropped yesterday.

A bit of a mystery. While Rodgers overestimated him (he was the player he wanted above all else when he took over) he's a good Premier League footballer.

He should at least be the best midfielder in that league. Maybe if he was with Bielsa he would be but he's been horrific at Stoke.

Really was a dismal career decision moving to Stoke. Couldn’t think of a more unsuitable club for a quality footballer (at the time at least anyway) like Joe Allen

Could be wrong but he didn't want to go to Stoke did he? As far as I can recollect he seemed to suggest he didn't really want to go there but understood why we sold him and he needed game time.

Allen went to Stoke in the Mark Hughes era when they were being set up to 'play football' so it didn't look a horrible choice at the time. Having said that, there must be some issue with the club as a whole. Allen was comfortably a Europa-level player when he left us and looked good for them the first season, now he's apparently a liability in a relegation candidate Championship team and he isn't even out of his 20's.

Neil Jones is obviously out of his depth but Shawcross, Butland, Martins Indi and Mame Diouf's performances have also fallen off a cliff in recent years. I haven't heard any stories of a drinking culture there but surely there has to be something going on we aren't aware of.

shawcross and Martins Indi have played only one game between them this season

Butland is a bit shit isnt he. when we were linked a couple of years back i seriously would have cried if we signed him. I see diouf wasnt even given a squad number

sounds like a lovely place to play right now

And to think, this is a team that beat us 6-1 a few years ago. How the mighty have fallen.

It's mad to think he opted to stay there when they were relegated. He'd probably be still in the PL had he moved on after they went down

Also means he will probably be stuck in Stoke for another season

Such a shame  :( Big loss for Wales and gutting for him to miss out.

I'm out injured for it too.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.
