I deffo believe it is 100% genuine Sony controller, but more of a dev controller with all the features packed in and working (move, touch screen e.t.c).

I'd like to think they'll pretty it up a little before final release.

Those thumbsticks are grim, like the shape of the controller for holding

Nothing announced so far about any announcement, but a lot of leaks as to a machine being worked on.  I reckon they'll both be announced this year and come out early 2014.

The "winner" of the next console war will be whoever is ready for the upgrade to 4k. So far all the news is that the PS4 will be and the next Xbox won't be.

Having better tech hasn't guaranteed a console to be a 'winner' in the last two gens.

Nah, not for me, I've only just upgraded to a telly with HDMI and won't be changing for another 5 years at most. Only just left scart behind.

PS3 probably had better 'tech' with regards to graphics, and Xbox 360 probably 'won' the 'battle' this generation...

You still need a 4k screen. 4k on my 1080p tv will look just that. That won't determine the winner. Blu Ray won the disc format war but it didn't determine the winner. Lots of people had hdtv's when the last gen launched, hardly nobody has a 4k tv.

This new generation of consoles favour Sony in comparison to last. PS3 launched a year later than xbox360, even more than a year in Europe. Sony had a shit approach to helping developers at the beggining of the ps3's life, plus the price, plus an inferior online network. All that will not be present in this new generation. There gonna launch at a more competitive price, they won't let MS get a jump on them, not by a year. They've improved there online network massively. They've also gone down a more familiar route in hardware, akin to a pc like 360 was so there won't be massive differences in programming and we should get similar experiences across both consoles. Both are going AMD gpu and processor. You can still argue either console as a preference but Sony won't be hindered as much like last gen. Plus they do have far superior first party development studios.

If anything the success of the ps2 made sony Lazy, they expected people to buy the console at a high price simply because its a Playstation. The success of the 360 has given sony the kick up the arse it needed.

Hence the apathetic quotation marks ;D

I'm an Xbox owner but the stuff that Naughty Dog have brought out for the PS3 is fantastic and becoming the margin for quality for AAA games. You can see with Tomb Raider and Star Wars 1313 that they're all trying to emulate that type of game.

4k tellys will probably come along at home-standard prices within 3 years and it'll be all about who is ready to be functional with that.

I'm happy with what the 360 and ps3 currently deliver visually though. I have a PC which produces better graphics but will that determine which direction to go in with this new generation? Maybe I'm just being naive, I thought we couldn't improve so massively over God Of War at one point. But I am quite content with the graphics on both ps3 and 360. I think as far as games go I just want to play something creative and different, as much as I love good looking games I want to be immersed more.

It's clearly a prototype, as Walshy said, it's to get the user experience right more than anything at this stage, once they have covered their bases functionality and ergonomically wise the final design version will be svelte version of the above.

Think there looking dated myself. Also take Battlefield 3, fantastic game but it's severely limited on console to the point that it's ruined the larger maps on Conquest because you can't get enough people to fill them.

They're already Black for all the contemporary release Xbox's. I'd agree that the 360 has one of the best controllers of all time. If I was to be honest, even though graphics don't make the game, I want ridiculous visuals on this gen. I want it to feel like my mind is being microwaved when I start the console up.

What I keep wondering is how much of an increase in volume and depth will we see in open world games, like the ones Bethesda makes? That and possible AI improvements in sports games are what really interests me, graphics not so much.

4k is a pipe dream and not at all feasible for a console anytime soon. Indeed, not any time soon for much of anything, and that includes high end PC's. Not only is it extremely expensive to buy a monitor that supports it, but to run that resolution in any game would take a tremendous amount of power, and that causes heating issues, something that was a major factor in such a long delay in actually getting the next gen of consoles out there.

Looks a lot better and less "chunky" in that new photo. Still think the depth will be reduced a bit in the final controller, though.

Also not really sure how Move will work with it, doesn't seem it'd be as comfortable to wave round as the move controller or Wii remote.

Wish triggers were shown as they're probably the worst part of the Dualshock controller.
Supposedly the L2 and R2 triggers have been improved (thankfully) and are now more like actual triggers as on the 360 pad.

Really glad they're using the Vita d-pad, it's so much better than the DS3 one.

I personally think that it's a lazy design from Sony if it's anywhere near close to what the final model will be like. It's just a dual shock again with a few extras. No thanks. It's been what? 16 years or so since that design first came out?

The design works though. What should they change? Maybe swap the d-pad and left stick positions, but that's subjective, some prefer the current layout and some don't.

They've added Move, a speaker and presumably will be bundling a headset to plug into the headphone jack, plus they've supposedly improved the triggers, and added the touchscreen thing. Not sure what else they could do without completely changing the design which seems unnecessary.

It could be better. It could be a lot more interesting and innovative, that's for sure. The controller was probably the most boring aspect of the PS3 for me. It's one of the things that actually put me off buying it.

I think there are pro's and con's to each controller and to be honest they can't change it too much these days without imitating something else which is dangerous.

Bumper buttons are better on the PS3 than XBOX
Triggers are better on XBOX than PS3
Menu button better on PS3 than XBOX
Layout better on the XBOX than PS3

etc etc...

Look at every single Nintendo console that's come out, though. They always put effort into bringing something different with each one. Sony and MS just say "we'll have that too" when it should be them coming up with new ideas of their own. They have a bigger R&D outfit and more resources to do it. I just think it's lazy from both of them. A new controller is a big draw for people looking for new ways to play.

Funny you say that. The Xbox controller was the thing that put me off buying Xbox 360.

PS3 controller, on the other hand, love it! That could be probably because I've been using it since the early PS1 days and they've more or less kept the same design. Anything else in my hand feels weird now.

The point is that they aren't creating anything new to enhance gameplay experiences. MS and Sony have just left that to Nintendo and then stolen from them. What are the odds of the new Xbox controller having a LCD touch screen? Fairly high, I reckon. Now, if the new Xbox came with Kenect 2.0 actually built into the console, that's something new.
