Awful news, my first footballing memories were from when Gérard was our manager. A real gentleman and a proper football man too.

RIP Ged. His reaction to Gary Mac’s free kick in the derby remains one of my very favorite memories supporting the club.
His expression was what many of us felt inside. A mixture of astonishment and utter joy. Even better was to come.

Really sad to learn of Gérard Houllier's death this morning.  His love for the club, the supporters, and the city really shone through - during his tenure and indeed after it.

He arrived at a club that seemed to have been left behind by others who had modernised, and he had a lot of tough but correct decisions - his decisions bringing about significant changed that laid the foundations for the modern, successful Liverpool Football Club of today.

I was 10 years old when he joined us, and 16 years old when he departed - his tenure very much being the period in which football & the Reds became things I'd follow for life, rather than passing childhood interests.  His tenure is the source of many great memories from that period.  The 2001 League Cup was 'my' first trophy (I was too young in 1995) and the months that followed were fantastic - the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Charity Shield, and Super Cup of course all being added to the trophy cabinet & honours list within six months.  I think that - amongst all that silverware - the 4-0 final day win against Charlton can't be overlooked...we were still under pressure from Leeds & Ipswich for 3rd place (Champions League qualification) and it'd have been easy to have relaxed after winning two major trophies in the preceding week.  Put us back in the big time and - ownership issues aside - we've largely been back there since.

Can't help but also think to how, during my childhood, Liverpool simply didn't beat United - they were on a different level, at which we weren't competing.  Ged's teams delivered us five wins in a row against United stretching just either side of 2001 - magnificent.  Put a spring in my step on school days afterwards, that's for sure.

The signings of Westerweld (later replaced by Dudek of course), Hyypia, Henchoz, and Hamann in 1999 were also massive for the club - that 'defensive diamond' transformed us and they felt like serious signings.  Babbel, Riise, McAllister, Smicer, Heskey, Kewell, Baros - lots of players who played their part in the successes of 2001, '02, '05, & '06.

What ever became of that young lad from Whiston who he let captain us a few times?

I'll always be respectful of Roy Evans and everything he gave to the club over the years - including some exciting football that I was too young to appreciate in the mid- to late-90s - but I feel like there's very much a feeling of 'before & after' Ged with he football club, and the summer of 1999 feels like where the modern version of Liverpool Football Club was born.

Thanks for the memories, Gérard.

His face should proudly adorn the Irish Kop banner along with our other great managers. He may not have won one of the two biggest trophies but his legacy at the club speaks for itself!

Only just heard. He was the manager of the Reds when I really started to get into footy - incredible childhood memories of 00/01.

Terrible, terrible news. Always a man with dignity and clearly ahead of his time in French football in the early 90s.

RIP Ged, YNWA.

First manager I can remember. He created a great team with some great players and there's no doubt we wouldn't be where we are now without his efforts.

It was his team that I first fell in love with.

Gutted :(
I loved that team. Two Germans for full backs, and one in the midfield. Sami and Henchoz as the two pillars at the back. That team today would be good enough to challenge for the league. With one or two more quality players added, it certainly would have been good enough to win it.

"5 cups, and the Champions League!" Can still hear that ringing in my head. An absolutely amazing season.

Thank you, Ged.

For my generation of fans, who had mostly missed the 'glory years', that treble season was truly wonderful. I remember that period of time with huge fondness. Thank you Gerard, and rest in peace.

It really was great and I think it might be the season I went to most games (that or 98/99, so I really hope it was this one!). A favourite was the 5-0 semi final win over Palace when we overturned their first leg deficit early. Litmanen, Fowler and Smicer all in sync. Brilliant stuff.

We had such a strong squad though. A really solid back four. Then two players for every position really. Gary Mac, Hamann, Gerrard then Biscan in midfield. Berger, Smicer, Barmby, Murphy out wide. Fowler, Owen and Heskey, then Litmanen too up front. Just a really strong, balanced squad.

It's a shame that the Guinean Messi left us the year before, otherwise we'd be all conquering. That summer window we signed him and Sami will always be a memorable one. I can remember watching us in pre-season and thinking "we've got some quality players here" despite them being unknown. That green away shirt will forever be synonymous.

Well, this is terrible news. He brought us back. After years in the wilderness, he gave us one of the most memorable seasons we've had in recent memory during the treble winning season. He gave us so much to be happy about. RIP Ged.

What a massive shame. RIP Gerard. So saddened by this, Gerard's team was my first true awakening of football and what made me fall in love with Liverpool.

As a kid, he provided the best memories I had of football. It was all his making. And while he didn't achieve the league or European Cup, the fact that he glittered Anfield in a way befitting of those winners is testament to how great a man he was.

He put us on the road for that eventual success, and without it, as a younger fan I don't think I would have quite had the faith that Liverpool could regain it. He provided some of the best days of my life, proved the magic of the club was still there and infused all younger fans with that spirit to believe in greater things.

That taste of magic he gave to us younger folk who were born just passed the glory years is what drove the younger generation on. Cannot underestimate his influence for guys like myself and so many.

Thanks Gerard, forever in the club's DNA and I will always carry the belief you gave!

Jurgen on Ged

Quote
Jürgen Klopp today paid tribute to Gerard Houllier on behalf of the current Liverpool squad after the former Reds boss sadly passed away on Monday morning.

The 73-year-old managed the club between 1998 and 2004, famously inspiring the unprecedented treble of 2001 as the League, FA and UEFA Cups were all secured in one incredible season.

“It is really, really, really a sad day,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. “I didn’t know Gerard too well – I met him a couple of times, but in those few moments he created a relationship with me which was really special.

“He is a true Liverpool legend and he is a true coaching legend. He was really influential in the game. A great coach, but a human being who gave you a really warm feeling when you were around him. For all of us it is a big loss and a really sad day.”

Houllier oversaw 307 matches while in charge of Liverpool, adding a further League Cup to the cabinet in 2003.

The French tactician’s work on and off the pitch helped restore the Reds to their position of one of Europe’s biggest forces, and laid foundations for further success in the years to come.

And upon Klopp’s arrival at Anfield in 2015, one of the first messages of congratulations he received was from Houllier, with regular communication between the pair continuing in the years that followed.

“I met him before I came to Liverpool and I knew him a little bit then,” explained Klopp. “When I arrived here, one of the first messages I received – and I didn’t even know he had my number – was from Gerard Houllier.

“I know he had other clubs – worked for other clubs, was successful with other clubs – but the way he described it, Liverpool was his club, his real club where he probably felt still connected more than any other clubs.

“He was really supportive from the first day; between now and then, always messages came in after big games, big defeats, big wins and all these kind of things. In between, Gerard really texted and told me, ‘That was right… that was wrong… I know the situation…’ and all this kind of stuff.

“He was a really, really, really nice and gentle person. I miss him now already. Maybe the only good thing you can say in the moment is he will never be forgotten here.”

Houllier was hugely influential in a major redevelopment of Melwood in 2001 as the club’s then training facility was transformed into a state-of-the-art complex.

“He was very influential for the Melwood rebuild,” said Klopp. “Melwood at the time was a really modern place and that was because of him – he was a really modern coach, he played a specific way of football.

“He was influential in all parts; a real and proper manager and had his finger in pretty much all decisions in the club and in a really nice way, and you don’t get that too often.

“When you meet a manager out there, we always have something to talk about, but not between all of us – that’s normal, that creates kind of a relationship. But with him, it happened in the first moment. That’s it.”

Recognition of Houllier’s success adorns the walls at the club’s new AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

Asked if that is the legacy Liverpool fans will remember about him, Klopp replied: “Of course, they will remember [the trophies] – but I hope they will remember him as well as a man who gave his all for this club and changed the fortune of the club in difficult times.

“I am not sure, I was not here, but he brought this club back on its legs. He started in kind of maybe a strange situation as one of two managers, but made the best of it – that was his character, obviously – and then became very, very influential.

“I think, if you want to remember him, you have so many things you can remember – and that’s probably the best thing you can say about a person.”

Rest in Peace Gerard.

My first Liverpool manager. What a crazy ride it was, that 2001 season.

Always remember that Roma game where he came back too, felt like a real-life movie moment.

God speed.
Maybe the group, led by your leadership, will see these drafts as PR functions and brilliant use of humor
