There's far better techincal novels out there but for sense of character it's up there with the best. I suppose it resonates with teenagers more than anyone though.

Dunno. The lad in it came across as an arrogant spoilt little shit to me. I thought that when I first read it as a kid. Awww. Boo hoo hoo lad. You've had some bad stuff happen? Boo hoo. So does everyone else. Stop whining and acting like a cock and fucking grow up was my initial opinion :)

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

I guess Holden Caulfield is a bit like Morrissey really isn't he Andy  :P

I'm torn about Catcher - I really liked it as a kid, but I don't want to go back and read it. I have a feeling if I were to read again I'd prefer all Salinger's other work, the short stories.
As a gateway book, i.e getting kids into reading, it will always rank highly on lists - everyone I know remembers it quite fondly as a book that got them interested in books. In a certain sense, regardless of its own merits, it is an important title. A bit like when I was a teenage twat listening to Oasis and then figured out all the bands they ripped off were well better - still have to thank Oasis for pointing it out.

get thee to the library before the c*nts close it down

Salinger's short stories are great. Someone slated 'Franny and Zooey' in this thread and at first I found it difficult to get into but by the end it was very rewarding. Spiritual as hell though, not to everyones taste I can imagine.

  • It's not much I know, but this is the best Barney could come up with at short notice. Too tight to buy his own cross-dressing gear. AKA 'Condomhead'. Has apparently had Elton John.

Cheers for the recommendations guys.  I have 2 comments:

1) JM Coetzee's Disgrace completely turned me off because of its racist (not racial) undertones.  I might need to read it again to see if it has the same effect on me, but I remember being pretty disgusted the first time around.

2) Douglas Coupland is a Canuck, not a Yankee.

Gun bother? Moose botherer?  You're all the same to us ;)

Glad to see the love for "remarkable things" Mal, I've just bought it after being totally knocked out by Jon McGregor's "Even the Dogs".  Definitely a new writer to watch.

Anyway, onwards with this impossible task...
The Right Stuff, Tom Wolfe.
The subject matter might not be the stuff of literary classics but the depth of feeling & admiration for the trail-blazing men it documents is astonishing.

I LOVE TOM WOLFE AND HAVE READ THE LOT.  I THINK THE RIGHT STUFF WOULD BE A GREAT FIRST CHOICE FROM HIM THOUGH.  THAT OR THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID ACID TEST THOUGH THAT'S SPECIFICALLY ABOUT A SUBJECT VERY DEAR TO MY HEART ;D

Brighton Rock - Graham Greene.
Ok, it's a thriller but if there's a better villain than Pinkie in the history of UK literature I'm a dutchman (you can call me Dirk).

A CLASSIC FROM ONE OF MY FAVOURITE WRITERS.  SUCH A RANGE OF MATERIAL.  FROM THE HEARTBREAK OF 'THE END OF THE AFFAIR' TO THE JOYOUS 'TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT'  'BRIGHTON ROCK' IS STILL A GREAT PLACE TO START.

The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger
Need I elaborate?

I NEVER LIKED IT.  ITS SUPPOSED TO BE A BOOK THAT YOU IDENTIFY WITH DURING A CERTAIN TEEN PERIOD OF MEGA-ANGST - SYLVIA PLATH FOR BOYS? - BUT I ALWAYS FOUND HOLDEN ANNOYING AND WEAK.  I LOVE SALINGER BUT WOULD RECOMMEND HIS 'NINE STORIES' OVER 'CATCHER IN THE RYE'
s from the good folk of RAWK; well the good people whose opinions I've grown to like & value...  ;)

Only read 'Catcher in the Rye' and I dunno how you can find it entertaining. The main character was an annoying little self-obsessed shithead.

i too am an annoying; self-obsessed and a little shit but with added charm.  maybe that's why i dont like holden?
