Kenny was a good player but he's a big headed bastard. Anyone who knows him will know he started this post or got Kelly or Paul to do it!

The truth? Back in me younger days I used to have a bit of a problem with the arl premature emancipation and so at me tarts behest took up recitin the Libpool team in me mind to delay matters. All well and good til I got ter number seven when we were both fucked.

Luckily, thee brought them vibrator things out not long afterwards!

For me, it's a no brainer...he was and probably always will be the greatest player to pull on the Liverpool shirt.  Gerrard is a class act, as was Souness, but they were different types of players and played in different roles.  The thing with Dalglish was he had the complete game; touch, vision, passing, both feet and heading ability.  He made it easier for those around him because he could put the ball exactly where he wanted it - short or long ball, build up play or the finishing touch.

Just ask anyone who played with him or against him in that era how good he was...they all say the same thing...Souness included and, by his own admission, Ian Rush had the goal scoring record he did due to Dalglish.

"It's our job that they can forget their problems for 90 minutes and then they can talk about the game, about the next game and that's how I want to live"

Was he better than Liddel?
Hard for anyone here to say because very few have seen them both play but of the ones that I know who did, my old man, uncle and the bloke I sit next to at the match, all three say Liddel was the better player. So thats good enough for me.
Seen more titles than he can remember...

I actually think Stevie pips it, not so much in terms of ability but more of his influence.

gerrard has influenced a team that is not the best in the league, with players clearly not as good as he is and has continued to influence even as the team has got better, so gerrard's ability is not to be underrated, however dalglish influenced the best team in europe and was a stand out player in a great team for years..........that is a measure of how good he was......and if you really want to know how good he is, ask our record goalscorer, and ask him how many goals he would have scored with out dalglish (i always remember the goals where he curled it in the top corner and rush's goal against against watford as just about typical of dalglish's quality and poise)

dalglish is the best player i have seen play - and i know it is relative, the game today is different to the game in the 80's, but then the game in the mid-80's was very different to the game in the early 70's and dalglish excelled in both

as for his accent, i interviewed as part of a school project, and found that he was easy enough to understand, but hard to hear cos he spoke softly, and when you did hear him, he was generally taking the piss!!  smart and funny man who still rips the piss out of the goons on sky and the bbc.........

always was my favourite player, and an icon that will not be surpassed at liverpool

After watching clips of Kenny, you'd be hard pushed to say which his stronger foot was. How many players can delicately chip a keeper with their wrong foot? Or smash it in from 25 yards, for that matter. As for his array of passes!

Re: The King's Arse, it was said of Billy Riley (legendary Catch wrestler from Wigan) that his massive arse was the source of his superhuman strength. Clearly, Kenny had a bit of that ass mojo going on too. He actually knocks a player to the floor with his arse in one of those clips posted above (no foul) before belting it in from 25 yards with his left. The goalkeeper just looks bemused.

Anyone who's seen the 100pwstk will also be aware of his modesty/humility. And he had a dry sense of humour that was lost on many (not unsimilar to Rafa in this respect).

He'll likely never be overtaken as our greatest player. That said, I think if Gerrard can keep up his form for another few years, AND when he captains us to number 19, and eventually retires, King Kenny might have to make some room and share the podium with, ahem,  'Sovereign Stevie'.

I think that Zidane is a better comparison for Kenny.  Zidane couldn't run past players as well as Barnes either.  But, he could unlock defenses the same way Kenny could.  He was unpredictable, two footed, great footballing brain and scored crucial goals for his team.  If you asked me who I'd prefer in my team - kenny or Zidane.  I think it's very close.  Kenny maybe just pips it for me but I don't mind people chosing Zidane if they think he's better.  Certainly, Gerrard isn't in that category yet!

Best UK player ever.
He was lucky enough to have the perfect touch in both feet which enabled him to execute the amazingly imaginative things that his brain somehow kept coming up with. His skills would more often than not be met with laughter from the crowd as he so comprehensively outwitted his opponents.
I had a die-hard Evertonian mate who ended up coming to Anfield every week just to watch Kenny - wished he'd come from day one, though he was still a die-hard Evertonian.

He gets a mention in the Guardian today:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/apr/24/joy-of-six-strike-partnerships

Quote
The Joy of Six: great strike partnerships

1) Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush (Liverpool)

Liverpool have more to thank Steve McMahon for than the couple of stellar seasons he drove their midfield in the late 1980s; he's arguably the man who brought English football's arguably greatest striking partnership together. Kenny Dalglish hadn't scored a league goal at Anfield during the first 10 months of 1981. He had turned 30 in March, and had suggested to Bob Paisley that it was time he moved back into midfield, or at least a withdrawn role. Paisley wasn't interested, though, keeping his star striker up front, sure he would find form again. But he didn't, and was sorely out of sorts when Everton crossed Stanley Park for a First Division fixture at the beginning of November.

Just before half-time, McMahon – at this point an Evertonian – crocked Ray Kennedy, who had to be replaced by David Johnson. Moving back into midfield to accommodate the substitute striker, Dalglish started to pull strings, scoring twice in a 3-1 win. Ian Rush, a recent signing from Chester and being slowly blooded into the team, scored the other. Something snapped into place in Paisley's head. From now on, Dalglish would play just off the young Rush, running riot in the extra space afforded to him in the hole. Having only scored eight league goals in 1980-81, the Scot hit 13 the year after, and a ludicrous 18 as a 32-year-old in 1982-83.

But his manipulation of the mobile Rush would be even more outstanding: the Welsh striker scored 30 goals in all competitions during his first season, 31 the year after, and a frankly silly 47 in 1983-84 (when the pair scored 59 between them). Rush had put years on the older man's career, who in turn had made him. Rush's record post-Dalglish was admirable – two 26-goal season hauls when Liverpool were still a force, a perhaps even more impressive 22-goal total in 1992-93 when the team was properly on the slide – but he never carried quite the same threat.

Well that's my next few hours sorted but my girlfriend will just sigh. Cheers again you hero man. I bet she moans a bit, but we live in Ukraine so it might take her mind off all the shit she's upset about right now. Here we go - she's going to get introduced to Kenny Dalglish.... Seriously sums it up. When Bob bought him(£440,000) as I recollect(not checked) the vast majority of Scottish football watchers knew he would be a star. I absolutely loved Kevin Keegan. He was magnificent for us. Amazing to get someone who could genuinely up the ante - and how!

Ta for this bump Ron - it says a lot when you get older north of the border, the number of people you meet whose Dads took their sons on a pilgrimage down to watch him at Anfield. I met another couple at a funeral last week - one a Liverpool fan, one not. You hear about folk doing that in relation to Messi in recent years. He was the best player in the world at that time though (before Maradona's emergence as a real player, rather than a circus act).

I wasn`t a Celtic fan, but i was a huge Scotland fan as a kid and went to many games at Hampden, most memorably for the `78 WC qualifiers. Kenny was our Maradona, our Pele, our George Best. When he got the ball you just knew something good was gonna happen. He was fortunate to have really good players around him in that era, but sometimes he, like Salah, carried the nation on his back. When he moved south that`s when i started to follow the fortunes of Liverpool. I have not regretted it.

I started going to Anfield in the 77/78 season and until the early part of the this century, I usually went 10-12 times a season. Saw a lot of Kenny - I'd say peak Kenny was 82/83 season. From October to March that season he was sublime.

Performances that stand out - the 5-0 at Goodison, when he could have had 4 or 5 but got none, a 3-0 v Spurs when he just ran the show and scored twice, the Watford game and that pass to Rush but, best of all, the day after Boxing Day game v Man City, 5-2, and he scored a hat trick. It was a 45,000 full house, in the days when full houses were like hens' teeth, and I was in the middle of the Kop 3/4 of the way up. Can still see his second curling along the ground past the wall. It curved so far Joe Corrigan got his hands to it and probably should have saved it. But he didn't.

I think 82/82 stands out because there were times when he'd skip past 2-3 challenges as if they weren't there - Kenny didn't always do that. The classic Kenny move was turning past someone with his back to goal. Plus, the goals he scored that year - his finishing gradually dropped off over the years but his passing and vision, if anything, got better. Would love to know what percentage of Rushie's goals were Dalglish assists.

Favourite goal I saw Kenny score? Probably the second one in the 3-1 win v Spurs that clinched the 81/82 title. Pounced on a loose ball and eyeballed Ray Clemence before placing a left footer into the bottom corner. Two footed as well! The celebrations after that goal were epic. Not St Etienne but mad enough.

I had my first ever trip to Wembley on 13th August 1977. It was Kenny's first ever game in a Liverpool shirt, Charity Shield against United. The two older lads I was watching the game with, who knew a lot more about football than me at the time said, "the lad from Celtic is good". That was some understatement.
It's difficult to compare players from different eras, due to lifestyle and training/fitness level differences but Kenny would have made it in any era. He was probably the most football intelligent player I've witnessed. He had it all, especially guile. In my mind he's comfortably in the top five players of all time to wear our jersey.

I think you'd do well to find a single person who disagrees with that :D

There are only two people in this World I called hero and idolised unconditionally: My Grandad and Kenny.

Kenny is unique. Complete. Without flaw as player or man. It's not trite to use Bret Hart's sig as it's way more meaningful when related to Kenny: "The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be"

Is it me or does King Kenny not get the same amount of plaudits as the likes of Best, Charlton, Cruyff, Platini, Maradona etc?

Best and Cruyff sit in the same tier he does for me. Best, funnily enough, gently acknowledges it in the 'Kenny: Portrait of a Natural Footballer' film.

(Cruyff as a thinker on the game is another matter maybe.)

It's not just you - I agree with you.

For if Kenny did get the same amount of plaudits like the others you mentioned, a lot more casual footy fans and fans of other clubs (not to mention general public not interested in footy) would have Kenny's name on the tip of their tongues when 'great players' are mentioned.

E.g. Bobby Charlton gets a lot more airtime etc. even though Kenny was far better (imho). But I think that may have to do with the fact that Charlton was English and the media were London-centred.. plus the England WC generation and all that jazz.

An easy top 5 LFC players of all-time (in no particular order) that I think most Reds would agree with would be:
Kenny
Stevie G
Barnes
Suarez
Salah

They all had far more distinguished international careers than Kenny apart from Best, who has a better highlights reel. That 70's/early 80s Scottish team really underperformed considering how well the players did at club level.

I saw Best numerous times, Cryuff just the twice and I would say that they and Kenny are the top three I had the fortune to watch at first hand. Kenny was simply ahead of any other player on the pitch. You would watch him play a pass and think who is that to, and suddenly it became clear. Genius is a term over used these days but Kenny was that good.

I saw his first two home games. An evening kick off v Newcastle and a Saturday afternoon kick off a few days later v West Brom (I may have got them the wrong way round. Blame the stripes). By that stage Kenny had made the debut that you saw at Wembley and also scored in his league debut at Ayresome Park. The expectation on the Kop before the night match was therefore semi-hysterical. I have a strong memory of it because the Dalglish chant was already up and running (the old St John/Toshack one). All the talk was about how brilliant this new Number 7 was. A lot of this hysteria was pure relief. We'd lost Keegan of course. But the consensus was already that Kenny might actually be better.

And he didn't disappoint. He scored in both these home matches (and maybe even got a brace in one of them). But it wasn't just his goals. It was his movement. The Kop is a very knowledgeable crowd and understood absolutely what they were seeing. I think we sensed, as early as August, that because the ball stuck to Dalglish regardless of the pressure he was under Liverpool were going to be able to lay siege to an opponent's goal in unprecedented ways.

For the next 12 years as it turned out.

I think the only argument people have is whether he is #1 or #2 (Gerrard)?

Seriously sums it up. When Bob bought him(£440,000) as I recollect(not checked) the vast majority of Scottish football watchers knew he would be a star. I absolutely loved Kevin Keegan. He was magnificent for us. Amazing to get someone who could genuinely up the ante - and how!

I was 10 in 1977 and was absolutely gutted when Keegan left. I used to go and get my Dads paper and I went the paper shop one morning to get the Mirror, read the back page and saw we'd signed Kenny and I legged it all the way home, dying to tell my Dad. I can't remember why I knew he was so good, I had seen him nutmegging Clem at Wembley and seen him playing for Scotland and just knew he was special.

Could have all been different if Shanks had known he was homesick when he first came to us and had convinced him to stay.

I think the only argument people have is whether he is #1 or #2 (Gerrard)?

Kenny was better than Gerrard. For me, the best midfielder I've seen for us is still Souness.  As for best ever, Older people than me will throw Billy Liddell into the mix, my City supporting neighbour saw him play in the 50's and said he was brilliant.
