yeah i was in that camp too

like all whacky shit it could have its moments but yeah it was big time cringy, especially rik mayall (who was great as flashheart in black adder but in this...)

I loved it, even thought when I first saw it I was way too young to understand a lot of it. We had a book too, floating round the house. I think I still have it somewhere though it's pretty tatty at nearly 40 years old!

Off topic but still kind of on topic, I found all of the Comic Strip Presents recently on more4. These have probably dated better than The Young Ones, Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, A Fistfull Of Travellers Cheques and both Bad News episodes are amazing.

I downloaded a load of them years ago, having seen 4 Men in a Car. I did find them pretty difficult to get into though and only watched about 6 (including those ones you mentioned). Bad News' Cashing in on Christmas is on my festive playlist.

There was two lines that took me a long time to get when we were kids.

1. "Do you dig graves?" " yeah, they're alright" and
2. "Your a spade, I always call him that"

I used to think, what the hell is he talking about. Then it clicked.

This show was so big back in the day. The day the second series started was like waiting for Christmas. It opened with Bambi as well, one of the best. Think it also coincided with us getting a video, just like Mike and Vyvyan. So you could pause it to try and see the inserted picture.

I remember my old dad laughing at Vyvyan when he was having a baby and thinking, oh wow he gets it. As if parents shouldnt somehow, as it happens he was younger than I am now.

Just watching it now on BBC4 - "Interesting". The one where Dawn French is a religious loon and they have a party. Not as funny as I remember.

It’s amazing how quickly comic shows age. Recently watched a re run of the ‘Fast Show’  which barely raised a titter.

I watched it a few years back and it defintely felt different most of the laughs were for nostalgic reasons.

I might give a few more episodes a go - "I've just got time before my balls drop"

Hardly surprising, and it’s not “that quickly” - season 1 of The Young Ones was broadcast in 1982, which is 40 years ago now.

To put that in perspective, that’s nearer to the end of WW2 than it is to today.

Still love to watch it, but it’s never going to be as funny now as it was on first viewing when I was 16.
