Gk - Vladimir Beara

When Lev Yashin collected his European Player of the Year award in 1963, he insisted that the best goalkeeper in the world wasn't him, but the Yugoslav Vladimir Beara. Whether you consider Yashin the best goalkeeper of all time or not, his testimonial has weight and is what attracted us to Vladimir. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Beara . Research a little deeper and it is clear why he was so revered. His domestic title honours were continuous: 3 in 5 years with Hadjuk Split followed immediately with 4 in 5 years for Red Star. Wherever "the ballet dancer with the hands of steel", went, titles followed. During the 10 year period between 1950-60, for club and Country, he was considered by many, including the great Lev Yashin, to be the best goalkeeper in the world.

RB - Vasilis Torosidis

A blood and guts spartan warrior of a fullback, Torosidis is one of only 5 players to receive 100 or more caps for Greece. A captain for both club and country, he has been a rock in defence for the last 10-15 years. Never afraid to put a crunching tackle, he will run tirelessly up and down our right flank. Think Finnan with facial hair and more goals - with him being the first defender in Greece's history to score 10 international goals. He also had successful stints in Italy for Roma and Bologna, proving he can mix it up with the big boys.

CB - Ivan Buljan

Ivan ‘Iko’ Buljian was a CB for Hadjuk Split, Hamburg and Yugoslavia.. He was Yugoslav player of the year, 1975, and when you look down the list of winners you realise what a prestigious honour it was back then     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_Footballer_of_the_Year#Yugoslav_Footballer_of_the_Year_(1972%E2%80%9390)
One of the few to leave Yugoslavia because of age restrictions placed on players before they were allowed to depart, ‘Iko’ joined Hamburg and Kevin Keegan reaching the European Cup final before losing by the only goal to Forest. A quick, ball playing footballer, he represented Yugoslavia 36 times before seeing out his career at New York Cosmos alongside Carlos Alberto.

CB - Gheorghe Popescu

Popescu is a Romanian legend. Tough, uncompromising, CB, he won trophies in Holland, Spain, Turkey and his native Country where was voted player of the year 6 times in 8 years. Captain of Barca for 4 years where he won the UEFA Cup Winners Cup, he then moved to Galatasaray and won both the UEFA and Super Cup with them. Captained his Country and appeared in 3 World Cups., Gheorghe and Ivan form the backbone of a defence that will be hard to beat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gheorghe_Popescu#Honours. Two granite jawed fuckers you would not want to get on the wrong side of. They would have decided beforehand who was going to kick the danger man up in the air and who was going to volley him on the way down.

LB - Grigoris Georgatos

Oft compared to Roberto Carlos for his savage left foot and umm bald head. Crazy Bald as he was nicknamed will be an attacking force down our left flank, offering one hell of a goal threat (he once scored 18 goals in a single season from LB) and doubling up with Greek compatriot Hatzipanagis to terrorise opposition defences and pull them out of shape.

DM - Ilkay Gundogan

Just pretend he never played for the plastics, this man was an absolute force for Klopp back in his Dortmund days. One of the best DMs in world football at the time. He would make the perfect foil for the more offensive attributes of Oblak in midfield - breaking up the play, shielding the defence, and playmaking from deep. If you don't trust me, let Klopp tell you how good he was an "intelligent and complete midfielder with numerous strengths" and a "great attitude", he was able to fit into Dortmund's explosive playing style "by combining creativity and outstanding passing with the defensive attributes and tireless energy needed".

CM - Branko Oblak

Oblak was a playmaker, two footed, with great vision. On moving to Hadjuk Split from his home club, Olympija, in the two seasons he was there they won the domestic double twice. Schalke 04 broke the World transfer record of the time to bring him to Germany, where they finished 2nd in the Bundesliga. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branko_Oblak He came to the attention of Bayern, who bought him and he was the mainstay of their midfield for 3 years culminating in winning the Bundesliga. Branko played for Yugoslavia in the 74 world cup and was selected into the best squad of the World Cup. His best position would be the Alonso role but he could get forward and score goals, too.

RW - Arda Turan

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Xg2oLlMDLw8&amp;" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Xg2oLlMDLw8&amp;</a>

Turan is the greatest Turkish player ever in his position. A flawed genius, he won La Liga with both Atletico and Barca along with Copa Del Rey’s. Europa League and Super Cup winner with Atletico, he is one of only six Barca players to score a hat trick in a Champions League game. He also scored twice as Barca beat Sevilla 5-0 in Spanish super cup final. A phenomenal, skilful, player, he had disciplinary issues that held him back; actually attempting to strangle a Turkish journalist on an airplane flight. He played a 100 times for Turkey scoring 16 times. With his ability to score and assist, he will provide a massive goal threat in open play as well as set pieces. Oh, and he is a Liverpool fan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arda_Turan

AM - Dragan Stojkovic

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Lx2p43NE9DA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Lx2p43NE9DA</a>

A tour de force of attacking midfield playmaking. One of the greatest dribblers of the ball I have ever seen. He glided across the turf. Don't take my word for it. Watch the video above and tell me you disagree. If not for injuries, who knows what might have been. In spite of this he still performed at an extraordinary level throughout his career and is rightly considered one the greatest players to ever come out of Yugoslavia. The star man in our team, he will pull the strings in the attacking third with his sublime vision and bring the best out of those around him by drawing away markers.

LW - Vasilis Hatzipanagis

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/95Vwngzgas4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/95Vwngzgas4</a>

Greece's greatest ever player? Once dubbed the Greek Maradona, this may be a slight exaggeration of his abilities, but certainly not of his raw talent. The man possessed sublime skill, first touch, dribbling, passing, and more. Watch in awe at his video above. He was absolutely unstoppable and utterly unpredictable on his good days. Good luck marking this man. He'll pull you every which way until your head is spinning. Eat your heart out Djalminha. Such a pity he never got the chance to play abroad - back in those days there was less player power and his club simply refused to sell him.

ST - Hakan Sukur

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/T0VXaAiQtXg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/T0VXaAiQtXg</a>

A prolific goalscorer for both club and country, Sukur was renowned for his ability in the air, superbly calm finishing and could outpace most defenders (watch out Kyrgiakos). For such a lanky fella, he really was a complete striker. I find his style of play somewhat reminiscent of our very own God. He netted 383 goals across his career and holds the record for the fastest goal in World Cup history. He also holds Turkish league records as their all-time top scorer (249) and highest ever scorer in the Champions League (22). There's no other way to describe this man but as a GOAL MACHINE.

Formation on the ball: 4-3-3

- Capable of interchanging positions with either Jovetic behind Halilhodzic, and Pandev and Scholl shifting out in the wide areas, or Pandev supporting Halilhodzic and Jovetic taking the wide position. In any case it creates multiple possibilities.

Overall the side has balance, creativity, flair, intelligence off and on the ball, and able to dictate the tempo in midfield, provide goal-scoring threats in different parts of the pitch . Subotic and Kovac with a towering presence and reading of the game, reliable, consistent, along with Baltas and Refik's no nonsense defending, and ability to stay disciplined and defensively organized, and comfortable on the ball.

Pjanic one of the better midfielders of his generation along with Sahin who was another key clog of the Klopp machine whilst at Dortmund's peak, both good at passing and distributing the ball, Sahin with good position for interceptions and tackles. Pjanic also offers threat from free-kicks as he's known to score from there. Both doing all the work they need to, to give Scholl the platform to do what he does best. His ability to score goals from his position, cause problems with his dribbling and creativity, the perfect midfield balance you could possible want, from one of  Bayern's greatest players ever. Collectively this is one of the best midfield's in the draft.

Pandev who showed during Mourinho's tenure at Inter, that he can play anywhere asked of him, on the wing and doing everything he needs defensively while still contributing offensively, and making the runs , with Jovetic on the opposite side who while injury plagued has always possessed the ability and talent to be a dangerous player on the pitch. Up top, Vaha leading the way with his poaching instincts and ability to score goals at a high rate.

Defensively : 4-4-1-1

GK - Antonios Nikopolidis: Greece's greatest keeper and integral part of the Euro 04 success, kept 3 cleansheets in the knock out stages of Euro 04, and was voted keeper of the tournament. Won 11 league titles total with Olympiakos and Panathiakos, and 9 league cups as well. Has been selected as GK of the year in Greece, a record 8 times. Reliable, consistent, dependable, everything you want in a goalkeeper along with being a good shot stopper, and having good reflexes

RB - Refik Sabanadzovic: Integral part of Red Star's back four during their European success, defensively good in all areas, could play as right-back,centerback and defensive holding midfielder. Famously did a number on maradona, when Yugoslavia played Argentina in the World Cup, unfairly sent off, but he was fairly young at the time and did a marvelous job. Was in a coma for a period of time after a head-on collision on the pitch, but came back from that incident and had a successful career, that tells you all about his toughness and determination. An eternal hero for the Red Star faithful. After winning everything with Red Star, went on to continued success for AEK Athens and Olympiacos. Proper leader, fighter, and technically gifted.

CB - Robert Kovac: Made his major breakthrough with Bayer Leverkusen during Bayer's best period in the last 20 years, performing well enough to earn a move to Bayern Munich in 2001, where he spent 4 seasons and helped win two Bundesliga titles and Pokal's, a reliable and consistent defender, on who Croatia relied upon for four different international tournaments in a 10 year span.

CB - Neven Subotic: Subotic having migrated with his family to Germany and US during the conflict in the Balkans, impressed scouts whilst playing in Florida which earned him a chance to join Mainz, during Klopp's reign and ultimately becoming one of Klopp's main players in the defensive phase. As soon as Klopp took over Dortmund, he brought in Subotic and rightfully so, strong in the air, strong in the tackle, good recovering pace, good reading of the ball, became a rock alongside Hummels during Dortmund's and Klopp's successive period, winning 2 Bundesliga titles, and getting to a Champions League final, whilst helping eliminate Real Madrid emphatically. He's not Van Dijk, but there's no shame in that, he's been a key defender for Kloppo during his most successful period in Dortmund.

LB - Hakan Balta: Balta a left-back and centerback through out his career, has mad contributions to Gala's and Turkey's sucess through out the years. Having played ten years for Gala since his move in 2007, he established himself as a regular and in the process won 5 league titles and several league cups, which had earned him a consistent place in the Turkish national team, achieving high praise and sucess with the side during their best run in 2008 when they reached teh semi-finals. Solid, physical no-nonsense defender through out his lengthy career.

CM - Miralem Pjanic: Since his breakthrough in Menz, Pjanic has consistently shown his ability in every side he's played for, in both France and Italy, and in European competitions, and for his country, he has improved every season since then and become a key player for every cub he's played for. Dictating the flow of the game, with good reading of the game, good football IQ, technical ability, movement, discipline, dribbling ability offensive and defensive he has become one of the supreme midfielders in world football. [also a very good free-kick taker and considering his position often as the deep lying play-maker, consistently contributes with goals but can play in every position in midfield]. Once called the Prince of Rome, now has become unrepeatable in the heart of Juve's midfield. Been selected for Serie A's team of the season for 3 consecutive seasons, along with the league success, he'll continue to be a linchpin of that midfield

CM - Nuri Sahin: I was absolutely over the moon when Rodgers managed to convince Sahin to join us all those years ago, and quickly was utterly dismayed by how he used him and so was Klopp. Sahin made his professional debut at the age of 16 for Dortmund and it didn't take long for him to become a star of the side and become a vital clog of Klopp's machine upon his arrival. Capable of playing as a DM,CM and AM, Sahin has similar attributes as Pjanic, great vision, great technique, defensive awareness, short and long passing, high football IQ,  Sahin helped lead Klopp's Dortmund to his first league title. After being proclaimed as the best player of the Bundesliga he earned a move to Real Madrid, which in hindisgh he should have never taken as he was out of favor there, but quickly came back to Dortmund and once more played an important part in more Dortmund and Kloppo success. At his very best, he was a class midfielder

AM - Mehmet Scholl: One of Germany's greatest ever players, one of Bayern's greaest ever players [included in their all time starting XI, he could play on the left on the right, as an attacking midfielder, he had it all, the goal scoring ability, the dribbling the pace, the technique, vision and drive to win. 8 Bundesliga's, 1 CL, 1 UEFA Cup, countless Pokal's, also helped Germany win the Euro's in 1996, 129 goals scored in 530 appearances from midfield is a sensational return.

LW - Goran Pandev: ''Pandev is a quick, creative, and hard-working left-footed forward with good technique, who is capable both of creating and scoring goals, due to his opportunism and shooting accuracy, as well as his vision and passing ability. He is capable of playing in several offensive positions, either on the right or through the centre of the pitch, and he is usually deployed in a supporting role, as a winger, as a second striker, or as an attacking midfielder, although he has also been fielded as a striker or as a false-9'' While Mourinho is a moaning tart, Pandev did manage to gain his attention and become one of key parts of the treble winning Inter side. Despite being a consistent goal-scorer for Lazio prior to his move to Inter, Pandev made plenty of sacrifices for Mourinho and Inter defensively in a more restricted role, but played an important part non the less. Macedonia's player of the year on 5 different occasions, has helped Lazio and Napoli win league cups on 3 seperate ocassions.

LW - Stevan Jovetic: The Balkan Daniel Sturridge, ala cursed by extensive injuries, but possesses massive talen and ability, and when fit, is a joy to wach. When Jovetic was playing at his consistent best during his early days at Fiorentina, every top club was eager to sign him, including our own Liverpool football club and Rafa, and unfortunately we saw how good he was during our encounter with Fiorentina a decade ago. ''A quick, strong and versatile player, Jovetić is a well-rounded forward, who is capable of playing anywhere along the front-line, and has been deployed as a main striker, as a winger, in a supporting role, or as an attacking midfielder, due to his ability to link-up with midfielders, and either score or create goals. A creative and technically gifted striker, he is also known for his dribbling skills, mobility, and pace on the ball, as well as his ability to make attacking runs towards goal from deeper positions and strike well with both feet.''  Despite his terrible injury record, he's still managed to score 99 goals in 300 some appearances

CF - Vahid Halilhodzic :  Halilhodzic, massively underrated player and probably not known by anyone on here but at least maybe I'll highlight what he did by picking him. He was often overlooked for the Yugoslav national side during his time, [he feels it was because of religious reasons biases ] its' hard to know but he was sensational for Nantes, he lead them to a league title in the 80's during the 5 years he spent there.

He was their leading goal-scorer in multiple seasons and also in the league, He was the top scorer with 27 goals when Nantes ran away with the title in 1982-83, and bettered his personal record to 28 goals in 1984-85 when the Canaries finished as runners-up. Overall, Halilhodzic netted 111 times in 192 appearances.

Battle of midfields this, between myself and Viva and Betty.

Scholl,Sahin and Pjanic vs Stojkovic,Gundogan and Oblak. Very very close, interesting match up.

As good as any midfields in the thread on both sides. I think ours has a lovely balance to it, with a robust back four, organised and resolute with the two greeks complementing our two granite CB's...who can also play a bit. Our front 4 have so many threats going forward it's hard to see how your back 4 could cope for 90mins. Outrageous skills from Turan and the Greek Messsi with take on's from Stojkovic all designed to free up Suker who would convert at least 2 of the many chances we'd create. Then, of course, we have Oblak and Gundogan bossing the midfield. Clean sheet our end......but of course, I'm biased. You have class all over the pitch....it's a tight one

Well said apart from how my back four could cope with you front 4. Hakan Sukur was great in Turkey but every time he attempted to play elsewhere he paled in comparison. The defensive quality that both Sahin and Pjanic posses would help the back four in that phase, Stojkovic would be key but both of my fullbacks could deal with the wide attackers that you lot have as. Subotic has marked better players than Sukur in his time at Dortmund, and I think obviously in my biased opinion that he could do a number on him.

I also have Pandev who is more than capable of clogging the midfield and doing the defensive side of the work as he did for Mourinho during his Inter days when they won the treble.

And how do you deal with Scholl and Jovetic who are both extremely creative on the ball, without mentiong Halilhodzic who was as supreme goalscorer in France .

It's a close encounter. A draw wouldn't be unfair

Two so so defences with two excellent attacks so goals galore. Very tight, can see this one going to the wire. I loved Suker and Lacatus - that's some serious firepower - and they were both on our radar...so it's a personal thing. Sarge wins 4-3.

Very fair. Turan, very underrated it seems, though and not mentioned.  However, his Atletic days were outstanding and he was probably as good as anyone out there for a couple, three years, winning La Liga, Europa and Super Cup. which got him his move to Barca. Although not his best move, he still won La Liga and copa del ray double there. Look at his reel, top, top, player. Turkey's best player in that position, a game changer and for all the players you rightfully say you have to quell our firepower and unleash very, very dangerous weapons of your own; you don't seemed to have accounted for Turan and that would be your downfall my friend. He can hurt you.

Having said that, Balta has played with him[Turan] numerous times, for both club and country. If anyone knows him it would be him, and again as I said, I would have Pandev help double up on him. Pandev did it against better players, and helped contribute to Inter's success. He has the work-rate to do so.

He's a good player but not a player who can take over a game by himself.

Sound, you pull Pandev back to double up then Oblak, free, strides forward and does this...

I thought the first game is a draw, so didn't vote on it. Not gonna throw a vote out willy nilly, just for the sake of it. I'd imagine another person felt the same

Cheers for that

Congrats to Bobby and Betty on the win, and to Sarge as well. Bobby and Betty have qualified for the next stages of the knockout phase :)

No mate, you and I have a match and we're tied on points.  Two teams go out of the group

Cheers, De, unlucky after that late rally. Well done, sarge. Your match with De will be tight and take a lot of picking. Look forward to it
