One my all-time favourite ambient groups, Carbon Based Lifeforms, have just announced the release of their eagerly-anticipated third album.

You can listen to samples of the tracks here - http://ultimae.com/en/releases/460/tracks.html

If you've never tried their flava, I can recommend it most highly.

Do it! You won't regret it :D

Ah good ole Geir Jensen - loving the Novelty Waves track, although it's a bit more uptempo than ambient.

You heard his collaborations with another fave of mine, The Higher Intelligence Agency? Just amazing......

Lookup "Polar Sequences" (great when sampling *ahem* herbal remedies) and Birmingham Frequencies (the track with the daddylonglegs stuck in the habitat paper lightshade is just mad!) - there's a great story about how the former was created and where the sounds came from.....the latter is equally mesmerising....

I can highly recommend "Countdown to Darkness" as well as "White Lightning" off the Polar Sequences album:

Ah, I know Dave Wheels very well indeed. He used to be in HIA. Many top nights getting stuck into a bag with him. He turned me on to Atom HeartTM, so I'm eternally greatful. He drove us to London to see Underground Resistance and stayed straight while we were all wrecked - a bloody legend that bloke, and cool as f***. Bobby Bird is just doing HIA now isn't he? Yeah, Polar sequences is lush.... Saw biosphere at the Herbal Tea Party in Manchester back in the early 90's. Stunning....

Mike Paradinas is one of my fave artists ever:

Larry Heard (aka Mr Fingers) did an excellent ambient album back in 1996 called 'Alien'. Here's a couple of tracks...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLENaZHD81c&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXmXcHBmESY&feature=related

For something even more horizontal, Steve Roach produced the album 'Artifacts' way back in 1994. This'll transport you to the outback if you let it...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYyLyGssrts

Finally, if you're still awake, someone mentioned the KLF album earlier as the daddy. Correct, but the Global Communication album 76:14 should also get a mention. The step daddy?

Red_Mist speaks the truth.... check them all.

I've got alien on vinyl and it's still awesome.

Artifacts is still awesome...

76'14 .... a piece of work. I went up to Tom Middleton at the big Chill in 2004 and just said "76'14" and he gave a big grin. Have you heard Pentamerous Metamorphosis?

Again, the pipe, the slippers, and more pipes....

I think this was quite an ambient one.

Wow, this thread takes me back!  I love "Surfing on Sinewaves", an Aphex Twin ambient classic.  Have it both on vinyl and CD.

My personal favorite Aphex Twin album has to be the seminal "Selected Ambient Works Vol 1 (85-92)".
This is the Album that changed my whole outlook on electronic music and the possibilities it provided.  I would urge anyone with an interest in this kind of music to take the time to listen to this collection.  Some of you may know Aphex Twin for the more industrial  sound clash material he has created since this time, don't be put off as this is very different. And you should consider the dates that this collection was created - 1985 - 1992.  It is light years ahead of its time.

Other ambient electronic music of note in my opinion is Future Sound of London - Lifeforms and some of the sessions they did back in the 90s for Kiss FM.  Truly stunning and other worldly.

I'm off to dig out my CDs as this thread has triggered some great memories!

Forgot about this one:-

Electronic Eye (Richard H. Kirk) - "Closed Circuit"

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/closed-circuit/id81397438

Nearly 2 hours long double CD, it's value for money if nothing else. The track 'Fourth World Destination' is really beautiful, one of my all time faves.

Ignore the review on i-tunes that calls it a collection of "groovy techno / house numbers"...innacurate description imo. It's far more ambient than that would suggest and is a work of art really. Highly recommend it.

Love 'traditional' ambient stuff..Eno, Budd et al, also classical stuff can give you the same existential thrill, listen to Glenn Branca, Phillip Glass and even Popol Vuh and Tomita.

You know what? The 'substrata' tracks aren't even the best bit - the "Man With A Movie Camera" tracks are awe-inspiringly good, especially "Ballerina" and "The Eye Of The Cyclone", plus of course "Endurium".

Am listening to them now with a pair of Grado headphones and the iTunes graphic equalizer and a glass of vodka with a splash of coke in. Nice. Riktigt najs faktiskt ;D
