Was a VERY young man in NY when the Wall came out.
They played 4 nights in LA & 3 in Long Island (NY). Couldn't get a ticket for love nor money.
In addition to the reviews being fabulous, there were rumours that this would be the last concert.
Desperate to see a performance, my cousin & I begged, borrowed & stole $300, hoping to buy 4 and sell 2. To bolster our barter, we took a large amount of a controlled substance with us.
Got there, the place was packed. Held 17-19,000 for a concert, I think. There must've been 20,000 more in the carpark. 5,000 of them looking for tix.
Were there for 2 hours, saw 1 ticket, he wanted $150.
The Boat Show was finishing it's run in the basement of the Coliseum and we figured there might be a remote possibililty of greasing some back door employee.
We pays our $10 and run downstairs to 'see the boats'. We must've defined furtive as we cased the place until we found 'the way'. The only way. Guarded by 4 tough looking Hell's Angel types and one roadie. I knew we had no chance cos' past them we would've been backstage. My cousin offered him $150, but he replied he'd lose his job if he let anyone past.
Back into the pissing boat show all frustrated, hearing the strains of the music through the thick walls, 2 plastic cops suss our game and tell us to get upstairs to the carpark. We paid $10 and I was too cheesed off to listen to any of their shite and so I started to mouth off that I was entitled to look at all the fucking boats I wanted.
My cousin is bolting for the exits as they start hustling over to give me a hard time. I'm standing my ground giving it the hard man and annoyed that my cousin isn't ready to back me up on this one when I suddenly remember he's holding all that contraband.
As I turned to walk unhurriedly away, I realised how close I had come to making a really big mistake.
