The reason 4 seems totally different is it was written as another movie, then turned into a new Die Hard. It was never intended to be originally.
I liked it for what it was.

Just ordered the Die Hard bluray after reading this thread. Had to.
 ;D

Weren't all the Die Hard films like that?

I have heard that 3 was written as a lethal weapon film originally

I didn't think 4 was that bad. It's better than 2 imo.

To think the Die Hard director also directed Predator, The hunt for the red October, Die Hard with a vengeance & the 13th warrior..

Not a bad portfolio I must say.

Close call between 1 and 3.

I'd say 1 edges it as it was a lot more serious than 3 which was more humorous.

No.1 is the best by miles. The rest were neither here nor there. I would agree that it is probably one of the best if not the best action films ever made.
Have to say though Commando with Arnie is the best for one liners. "let of some steam bennett". "What happened to Sullie?" "I let him go". "I like you sullie... that is why I am going to kill you last" are classic.

I'd say predator and robocop and lethal weapon (the first) are up there with Die hard but maybe not quite that all action.

1...3.2................4

1 has everything, perfect. I rewatch it every Christmas at some point. 2 and 3 have some flaws but not enough to stop me watching them if they're on the telly. I've seen 4 once.

1 had a wonderful claustrophobic feeling, McClane was basically on his own running up and down fire escapes and crawling around ventilation shafts. No comedy or idiot sidekicks in sight. I love that about it and the only other action film that ever dragged me in like that was Alien.

As was the third film, from a script called Simon Says. At least they did a bit work on it to make it actually seem like a Die Hard film unlike the fourth one. Willis' character could have been called Bill Jones in number four.

Has anyone read Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorpe which the first film is based on? Supposed to be very similar.

1, 2, 3, 4.  People continually over-rate 3 due to the Samuel L factor.

After watching it again last night, i have to disagree.. It is a great movie on its own. Samuel was really good, but thats not a reason i choose the film over #2.

Reasons why 2 is better than 3

No need for a stupid sidekick. John Maclane works alone. The racial aspect to 3 was just uncomfortable to me. (Zues/Je-sus)

Die hard is a Christmas film. Die Hard 2 is a Christmas film. 3 and 4 are not.

In 1 and 2 he is the reluctant hero and has to save his wife. In 3 he could have just walked away. But bowed to the pressure of the police badge.

1 and 2 were written as Die Hard films. 3 was taking an already written story and shoehorning it into a Die Hard film.

John Maclane jumps through no hoops. He just runs in with a machine gun until everyone else is dead ;).

Those stupid riddles just slowed everything down. That stupid water jug riddle

4 doesn't exist as it was a PG-13 film. Its not even a die hard because he doesn't say yippie kai yay motherfucker.

But its all irrelevant anyway as there is only one true Die Hard film and that the original

Really enjoyed 4, didn't think he'd be able to pull off the John McClane character again given his age but he did.

I own 1 and 3 and would struggle to pick between the two.

I love the Willis / Jackson relationship in 3. Hans is the best villain of the lot, and they're both non stop.

Pure Hollywood action movies as they should be. I think I have a special affection for 3 as it came out around the time I started watching 15 movies at the cinema and I remember the hype and controversy over the billboard he wears at the start.

Takes me back, and it's also one of those films you can watch over and over and it never gets boring.

Yeah, I remember that. Another classic case of a scene being taken out of context. I even remember the hype about Die Hard 2 being the most violent film ever made at the time because of the body count. They forgot to mention that 95% of the film's deaths were on the plane that the terrorists crashed that we basically didn't even see.

I remember being on holiday in America watching Die Hard 3 in the middle of the afternoon so it had all the violence and swearing cut out, it was hilarious. They had very cack handedly CGI'd 'EVERYBODY' on the sandwich board instead of the 'N' word. Why not just cut the wide shot of it? Haha

They had also dubbed over 'motherfucker' with 'melon farmer' :D

The first, but I really enjoyed the third with Samuel L Jackson. The second didnt do anything for me at all, not sure why. And the fourth, well, we wont go into that.

Is there a fifth coming out or did I imagine that?

from WikiPedia

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
On May 5, 2010 it was announced that X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The A-Team writer Skip Woods was in negotiations to script a fifth Die Hard movie and that the film will be produced by Alex Young. Bruce Willis will again return as John McClane, and Willis said that he would like to see Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman return and even wishes to see the story take place outside of the United States of America, with a tentative title of Die Hard 24/7.[3][4][5]
On October 5, 2010, Willis announced during a MTV interview that a first draft of the script was finished and that the shooting should begin in 2011.[6] Regarding a possible Die Hard 6, Bruce Willis told ShowbizSpy, "for me, I want to do Die Hard 5, then one final Die Hard movie—Die Hard 6—before finally hanging that white vest up for good".[7] Noam Murro was set to direct the film scripted by Woods and continue to develop the script,[8] but he left to direct the 300 prequel, 300: Battle of Artemisia, instead. Irish-born director John Moore is now signed on to direct.[9] The film is said to involve John McClane and his son heading to Russia.[10]
On 13 October, 2011 the studio announced exclusively on The Jim Rome Show that the film would be called A Good Day to Die Hard and would be released on Valentine's Day 2013.[11]
On 13 October, 2011 sources at FOX Studio's indicated that Patrick Stewart is under strong consideration for the film's main villian, a disgraced Russian general who plots the assassination of the visiting U.S. President.[12]

Great action movies, I watch 1,2& 3 often. Bruce Willis and that smirk... I'll watch anything with him in it.
So many action movies today are utterly forgettable. The Die Hards had such great characters and humor. Now it's all cgi can't remember most of them a month after watching them.
