And the 50's bands to which you alluded were...?

Peel played music from every decade and from every country. There's a Japanese 7" (or would it have been a 10" 33rpm) that he played from the 20's/30's that I still have ringing in my head - the chorus anyway, one that I'd love to know the name of. If he was alive, and I was to mail him to ask who/what, he'd obviously have to take a guess. He played it a few months before he died.

VdM is spot on about the 50% rubbish bit - his shows were always like that. You could listen to a show of his and note down one band in the back of your head that you wanted to hear a bit more of, but you were always entertained for a full 2 hours. As a BBC music radio show, it is peerless, and it will never be surpassed.

Internet radio is doing that now - not the BBC.

You don't have any Fall LP's Tim - but if you come across Grotesque (After The Gramme) in a £1 bargain dip, which might be likely - take a punt. You may end up liking shit music after all.

Right click and save this... it's called '50 Year Old Man'.  :P http://burningworld.org.uk/The_Fall-50_year_old_man.mp3

lyrics purely for interest:

50 YEAR OLD MAN  [top of page]

Computer doesn't work for me
I had a Sinclair back in 1983
OL2QU, pre-warranty
And don't forget he's still up to it
That Steve Albini
He's in collusion with Virgin trains
Against me

I'm a fifty year old man
I'm a fifty year old man

But it won't get me

Go down Manchester town
Can't navigate it
The club scene, man
You can't compare with it
One third of securities count
I can't understand that
Again

You're not real boy
I say you're not real boy
You're a gym [teacher]
You're a Cancer and I expect
A little shit

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it

I got a three foot rock hard on
But I'm too busy to use it

I'm a fifty year old man

I'm a fifty year old man
What you gonna do about it?

I go round a hotel
I see "Throw the towel on the floor"
On The Green Man
I throw it on the floor and
I piss in it

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it

I'm trying to...

And don't forget
You try to destroy me
You're in collusion with the trains
Don't try and kid me

I'm a fifty year old man

Go down to the town
Can't navigate it
The club scene, man
You can't get in there

[Banjo interlude]

[Backing vocals repeat: 50 year old man]

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it
I'm a fifty year old man
What're you gonna do about it?

And don't forget, you tried to destroy me
Steve Albini
You're in collusion with the trains
Don't try and kid me

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it
I'm a fifty year old man
What're you gonna do about it?

I've got a three foot rock hard on
But I'm too busy to use it

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it
I'm a fifty year old man
What're you gonna do about it?

Go down Manchester town
Can't navigate it
The club scene, man
You can't compare with it

I'm a fifty year old man
And I like it
I'm a fifty year old man
What're you gonna do about it?

And don't forget he's still up to it

[Interlude]

An inferior product mess
An inferior product man
Just over two thirds the price
I'm proud of it
I'm proud of it

I'm a type of guy who knows what is on CD
And then they lecture me on turning rubbish out
While shouting themselves out of existence

If they care so much, why don't they try eating
some of those cardboard cut-outs themselves
And they stuff the complimentary catering down their neck
Do the fifth re-take of their attempt to be scruffy
On a train
And go back to counselling and communicating

I'm an inferior product man
I'm an inferior product mix
They call me "Bad Head"
Don't ever forget it
And here is the fade out
Fade out
Fade out

http://burningworld.blogspot.com/2008/05/fall-radio-sessions-vol-2.html and several more there for free downloads  8)

I tried to tell 'em about it... (great stuff on there)

So at least I was half right

 ;D

Am doing a disservice to him really. 50% was pretty brilliant, most of the rest was just really good.

I can't believe that there is a Fall track out there that is longer than that one, if so, I'd like to hear it. It's nigh on an epic. And parts do fail, but for a Fall fan like myself, I'd say that these 'failed' parts are done on purpose*. 'He's getting old' etc. I've never thought for one minute that Smith was 'angry'... pissed off yes, but not angry. But there's more humour involved in a Fall track than MANY - he's more playful than angry.

(* OK, not on purpose, but at least done with the joy about not caring how it sounds)

Currently listening to 'Container Drivers'... a song I like to listen to on the motorway:

Net cap. of 58 thousand pounds
They sweat on their way down
Grey ports with customs bastards
Hang around like clowns the
Uh-containers and their drivers

Bad indigestion
Bad bowel retention
Speed for their wages
Suntan, torn short sleeves

Look at a car park for two days
Look at a grey port for two days
Train line, stone and grey

This is not their town
Big cigars come out of the ground
Sweat on their way down
F. Jack's a distant relation
Communists are just part time workers
And there's no thanks
From the loading bay ranks

Look at a car park for two days
Look at a grey port for two days
Train line, stone and grey
RO-RO roll on roll off
The container drivers
Speed for their wages
Uh-containers
Uh-and their drivers

Ok then.... BritishPeople in Hot Weather

Fill green envelopes and send them to ya
On train ride, read Marx tracts
Play walkmans loud behind ya
Demonstrate on Oxford Street
About what the Hell they couldn't tell ya
British people in hot weather
Have a heart-to-heart with your sister
People in shorts drunk before ya
Beached whale in Wapping
His armpit hairs are sprouting
Serpentine ah.... Serpentine grrr...
British people in hot weather

Press hot houses waste tree statements
Compare your pearls before the King of Monks
I'm telling ya, oh
Do they know they can get cancer?
Designer tramp goes grrr...
Looking jolly from Stoke
As he walks through and makes up
Titles like this, to order
They're well off their trolley
Smoking like a chimney
Bespectacled stare-out
British people in hot weather

I was a candidate for club 18-30
but I've been through all that shit before
British people in hot weather
That's it, I'm looking straight for the car
If that's how you feel, let's go
British people in hot weather

My turn... Dog is Life/Jeruslam, currently my fave Fall song...

8 minutes of pure quality...

You don't see rabbits being walked down the street
And you don't see many cats on leads
Dogs pet dogs dogs rapacious wet dogs
Owner of dogs slow-witted dog owner
Owner of rabid dog saving fare for tunnel
Euro-dream of civil, civil liberation for dogs
Society secret society inevitable nightmare
Of drift dog pet dogs street bullshit
Dog shit baby bit ass-lick dog mirror
Dead tiger shot and checked out by dog
Big tea-chest-f**ker dog
Black collar sends East German refugee back switch and crap pathetic
Of earth-like lousy dog role model for infidel doghouse continent
Most citadel dog-eye mirror hypnotic school slaver and learn
Rot from dog on grass and over nervous delicate dog
Detracts light from indiscrepant non-dog-lover
Dog pet dog come home to ya
Come home we'll talk shit to ya
Dog the pet-owner-owner blistered hanging there death dog
Plato of the human example and copier dogmaster pet mourner
Dog is life

And did those feet in ancient times,
Walk upon mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth on clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem
AIn the dark Satanic Mills?*

Jerusalem

It was the fault of the government
I was walking down the street
When I tripped up on a discarded banana skin
And on my way down I caught the side of my head
On a protruding brick chip
It was the government's fault
It was the fault of the government
I was very let down
From the budget I was expecting a one million quid handout
I was very disappointed
It was the government's fault
It was the fault of the government

I beecame semi-autistic type person
And I didn't have a pen
And I didn't heve a condom
It was the fault of the government
I think I'll emigrate to Sweden or Poland
And get looked after properly by government

Jerusalem

Bring Bow of burning gold:
Bring Arrows of desire:
Bring me Spear: O clouds unfold!

And though I rest from Mental Fight,
And though sword sleeps in hand
I will not rest til Jerusalem is built

In Englands green and pleasant Land.

Posted on the Greatest Lyrics thread, but....

Stop eating all that chocolates
Eat salad instead
In fact, you're a half-wit from somewhere or other
Why don't you bog off back to Xanadu in Ireland
Glam Racket
Don't try to cheat me
I'm fragile
You hang around with camera crews in shell-suits
You liked your own sweets
You read Viz comics
Glam Racket
You are bequeathed in suede
You are entrenched in suede
Glam racket
You've got celluloid in your genes dad
You are Glam Racket
You've cut my income by one third
You are working on a video project
You hog the bathroom
And never put your hand in your pocket
Glam Racket
You're paging the [...] in Spain
You can't read between the lines
You price cut down
You're one of the best songs I've ever heard by Steven King
Glam Racket
Brimstone
You Clearasil produces Richtofeon rashes
Sideboard like on mountains
Clearasil is in conjunction
[Shadrach, the shark]
You post out sixty-page computer printouts
On the end of the forest [chorus?]
On the above will come back to you
And confirm you as a [down passion]

You and I agree on much about art. However at this junction, I shall be turning left and you right I fear me ol chum. ;)

If those roads were straight... one day we'd cross eachother again. You are invited to spend a couple of nights round here sometime, where I can slip on my 14/15/16 (god knows) Fall Lp's... to see if I can change your mind.  In the words of The Fall's classic tune, C 'n CS Mithering, 'Three daysThree months, Three days, Three months, A treatise, A treatise'...

actually, that probably sounds like hell doesn't it?

For those that haven't seen 'The Wonderful and Frightening World of Mark E. Smith' documentary made about 4/5 years ago... here's part one.. other parts are easily found from here. Enjoy, or just shut it down after 80 seconds... the choice is yours :)

... just wanna write some shite. Blame it on the drums in the opening of Gramme Friday.OK, I've listened to that at least 5 times and keep hitting that back to the beginning bit on the iPod. Everytime you click that button by the way... it sounds like I'm Pete Tong on the desks!  :D Bwillilliant! (TWAT)

(Incidentally, I found a dead dried out toad in my garden the other week... he looks just like this smiley on here:  :D - I'll take a pic of it one day and show it to you all - it's amazing)

I watched that Wonderful World doc in full since I posted it above^ - seen it before but they are a very very good band, no question. Much of what was said was shite, like much that I would write, but can't imagine that anyone with half a brain couldn't be gloriously under their spell as I am listening to Gramme Friday. It is Friday after all... isn't it?

The people I like live
in kitchens and halls.
I can't reach a decision on this.
Can I come back to you on this?
Hitler lost his nerve on it.
Dr. Morale prescribed it well
It's [spastics].
I am Robertson Spiel (sounds like I, Ann Robinson Spiel - which I prefer. Ed.)
and this is my Gramme Friday.
Skin drops slow to the bones
But I've got my hunger anyway.
I'm on Gramme Friday.
Work and eat spontaneous
Enter the house of weariness.
It's spastics.
Look out
Look down
Look out
Look now
The hunger....
Friday .

The last time I gave up smoking was some years back. After 5 hours I pathetically broke down crying outside the Kings Head in Islington, London. The emotions were partly due to the utterly shit band that were on at the time, but safe to say, I have the Fall on tonight, helping me thru my 6th day of non-smoking. I could kill someone right now... Allen Carr you bag of fucking shite you. It's not going to work is it? I mean really?

The Fall will get you through it. Seriously, anytime I'm in a foul mood I stick Mr. Pharmacist on full blast and I feel much better.

Been listening to the new album a bit this week - it really is good. No duff tracks and a lot of very good ones. Tommy Shooter is the favourite at the moment.

Gonna do a write up for the Fall's 4th LP/... 'Grotesque' - will try to get it sorted so that it can be downloaded by timbo et al - just because your a bunch of cheapskates with delusions of grandeur

Before this write up comes in tho - am gonna have to give it some thought. It's the best LP ever made - so I should really.

Which tunes are you missing? I forgot about my promise above .. ha. Will try and sort that, but as yet haven't downloaded iTunes onto my new laptop as it would probably explode.

I'm no good at writing, especially about music, but maybe I'll have a go after I sling the tunes up.

Bought his 'autobiography', Renegade', the other day - sped thru it in an afternoon. It comes highly recomended. It reads so well, so smoothly, but he goes all over the place, covering this that and the other from this then and the future. The first 60 pages is a big 'fuck off you bunch of useless c*nts' (the last line up he booted - Ben Pritchard et al.) He's like grifter, but on codeine.

After that, although he does continue ranting at any given moment, returning often to ex-band members, there is at least one good rib-tickling line or story or use of a swearword after every turn of the page. He really does know when to bring out the word 'c*nt' for maximum effect. Had me in tears at times. Loved his little rant about people who call themselves after Kevin Keegan especially. Some good other footy anecdotes - a great one about George Best. Has some words to say about the modern game etc.

He's recorded so much music, and with such a variety of people, so there's obviously gonna be some stories - he can't stand Noel Gallagher - likes Liam tho, but spotted Noel Gallagher checking out the labels in his shirts hanging up in his bathroom which tickled me.

Reminded me of a Bukowski book in a way. Short, pin-sharp sentences, quick paced and a great sense of humour.

To quote one line: 'I hope this book turns out like Mein Kampf for the Hollyoaks generation.'

Song for today... 'The NWRA'. Play it loud.

you might be able to get the LP here.. http://www.mediafire.com/?zi049nmbml1

The story about him and Besty with Suggs is great. As was him sacking marc on his wedding day. His rant against travelling and people who have travelled is spot on.

He also has some nice things to say about us as Liverpool - a proper team.

Proper team indeed. Loved his 'I don't stick around for the second half analysing the game like United fans do' bit too. Cracked me up - the curmudgeon. And his afternoon before he had to read out the results on the BBC - 'don't you need to go shopping love?'. Haha.

His rant against travelling and people who have travelled is spot on.

I watch BBC Breakfast every morning, and today there's Cracknell and whatshisface talking about their trip to the Antarctic and I'm thinking yes, that will be an utter mindfuck, but you're leaving behind a different utter mindfuck and it's arguably more important. Then you see some stills of Scott et all wearing pajamas in minus 40 degrees and you're thinking - yeah - well done lads - great watching you online and all that. Still - gets them on telly.

'NEW FACE IN HELL!'

I've just written so much crap about this LP on paper it's not true.. ha. I wish I could write, but the trickiness is increased (I would use exacerbated but not sure how to spell it without assistance) as I was barely into double figures by the time this was released.

I knew about Thatcher tho, and some could argue only thru Spitting Image and The Young Ones etc, but I definitely cottoned on to the idea of rebellion at an early age. Wasn't the same with The Fall tho. Thought they were a has been indie muppet band the first time I saw them do Ghost In My House on telly. It was only in late 1989 when I kind of registered them.

I'm still trying to register them.  I'm still blissfully unaware of so much but what has become increasinglt clear to me is this: There is no British band to touch them. I mean there isn't. Would bloody love to bring up a challenger but there isn't one. Not one. Not Zeppelin, not The Beatles. This country has been defined by The Fall. It's now so plain to me.

It's too complicated and redundant to try and work out something similar for America, I mean where the fuck do you start, so I won't bother. What is true however, is that America have never had a Fall - so are we arguing that the Fall are the best band that ever lived here? I'd give it a go.

For some old berk to proclaim that, you'd have to paint some genius works on vinyl... lots of them. I can't do that unfortunately - I mean I could drag up some very special LP's at any given moment for sure no? But some genuine classics? Doubtful. For me yes, but for general consumption, maybe not. Lots of people like Springsteen - I can't stand him - he's a good version of Bryan Adams (that was for Timbo). So classic? Don't want to go there.

Except... you cannot judge or make comment about the Fall or anything that Smith has been invoilved in without listening to this LP. You just can't. Nigh on 30 LP's but this is the bitch - forget your Dragnet's etc.

For some while, I've had this sweet dream that I'm lying in the sun alone with Nina Simone listening to The Fall and we're both twiddling our toes to the beat. The sea is washing up along our legs but we're oblivious.

I read one review that said it's the most threatening Fall LP - 'even by Fall fans'. I don't understand that. I really don't. Threatening? No no no... this is a joyous cum-hither let's dance of an LP.

Just decided... Sod my review.. just go out and get it. Arguably Britains blah blah b;lah... even to you Springsteen fans (poor sods).

Imperial Wax Solvent. What kind of name is that for an album? It's a genius name for a genius album. Named by a genius.

Considering that this Fall thread is still stationed amongst stickies... should the council start to pontificate over what is/was/was best song? Or shopuld we shrug and think fuck that.. it's probably by Can instead?

Or not?

Rowche Rumble is my fave at the moment.

It could be Elastic Man or Eat y'self fitter tomorrow though.

Just saw them play at Wickerman the other week. Menacing as ever. It was the end of a gloriously sunny Scottish afternoon, people were relaxing in the sun and an arld hippy woman far-far-gone was accompanying every band on wasted tambourine. They left the stage an hour later as the thunderclouds massed ominously over the Solway and the arld hippy woman had staggered left in confusion.

They played Mr. Pharmacist at Wickerman. A rare and totally unexpected treat. Is Mr Smith going soft in his old age?

I certainly hope not. Saw them in Croydon a few years back and they did a golden oldie style section.

Living too late is my fav, or possibly Free Range, but it changes with the weather really. Fav LPs are This Nation's Saving Grace and Grotesque.

I think he regularly resurrects a few oldies from time to time. I've lost count of how many times I've seen them over the years, and they have always chucked at least on song into the set that has been a complete treat.

Everytime I've seen The Fall (6 times?) they've always slipped in a good few oldies, and Mr Pharmicist regularly gets a work out.

I'm pretty sure that at nigh on every 64 year old's birthday party, a certain song gets played to them... what's the betting that when we get to 50 we'll be slipping on the excellent '50 Year Old Man' track? (right click/saveas)

They eventually get this going live at HMV records: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khg4jW-f4vw

Another tune that often gets a good going over is one of their better ones of recent years with a very special colon wobbling baseline...

'Blindness (rc/sa)' from Fall Heads Roll.

My pal at work did the sound for them at the Wickerman festival. Got some great pics with the bassist, and said grown tough roadies were terrified of Mr Smith, he had a look in his eyes that scared the fuck out of you.
Yep.

Just found this thread... has no-one mentioned Sparta FC yet?

"English Chelsea Fan, this is your last game, We're not Galatasary We're Sparta FC..uh"

I put this on a compilation called 'Road To Istanbul' that I made before the Chelsea game to psyche me up.
So it's got a special place in my heart!

'Blindness'. Now there is a snap-your-neck-like-a-twig riff when played live.

Also really enjoyed the Von Sudenfed album he did with Mouse On Mars, featuring arguments about lawnmower noise levels!

How about faves from the latest LP. '50 Year Old Man' was the first6 one taht stuck out as a Fall classis, but I wish it wasn't quite as long. it does tend to ramble. Wolf Kiddult Man (anyone know what ti means?) and Tommy Shooter are other stand out tracks for me.

Mark E Smith interview on Burning World:

http://burningworld.blogspot.com/2008/07/mark-e-smith.html

On 16th July the eternally godlike Mark E Smith graced the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London for one of those weird Q&A/Interview gigs he does from time to time. The bloke tasked with the job of conducting the interview is a bloke called Ian Harrison who apparently is the associate editor of Mojo. The interview starts in chaotic fashion with Mark having a spot of bother with the microphone but he's soon provided with a more reliable one and it's down to business. The interview is fantastic and had me almost splitting my sides on more than one occasion.
Just check it out. You won't regret it.
