Motson you could tell was a sweet if slightly eccentric guy (thinking of his famous sheepskin coat) who just loved the game. RIP.

another piece of our childhood gone, regardless of whether you thought he was a good commentator or not, he always carried the same genuine enthusiasm whether it was a world cup final or fa cup 3rd round. never snide and no agenda.

Ah man this is sad news. Only 77 too. As others have said on here was one of the voices of football when I was growing up. My favourite commentary piece of Motty was the 1982 world cup final. The way he built up the excitement to Marco Tardelli's goal and then the aftermath will always live with me. Great commentary that just said it how it was with pure appreciation of the goal. I wish I could find a clip of that somewhere.
RIP Motty. One of the best

Hard not to hear his voice when you think of some of the big goals we scored, especially in the 80s and the Cup Finals. RIP
Here’s Nicol, looking for McMahon, he got away from Ratcliffe. And John Aldridge in a great position, and Liverpool have scored…… with their first attack.

That commentary from the ‘89 final has been etched in my head since the day I first heard it as a nipper.

RIP John.

1989 cup final: John Aldridge in the right position. And Liverpool have scored! In their first attack.

Also remember him saying “that’s the poacher’s position” when Aldridge tapped in against Arsenal. And loads of “still Barnes…brilliant” type moments from that era.

Ha ha, just quoted they exact commentary. Brilliant

The Gerrard Final

Thanks for posting that, haven't watched it for years, amazing what you forget, how good was Pepe Reina after his cock-up in the first half!

On Motty, was he the only person in the world who pronounced Didi Hamann's name as Harman?  ;D

Agree with the previous posts here, the voice of several generations of football - I remember the Hereford-Newcastle game way back when - was a real shock result and as I just read on the BBC Obituary, was the game that kick-started his career.

Ronnie Radford! Yeah think he was quite low down the pecking order covering that game and it’s only because it was such a giant killing that it got so much prominence and boosted his profile.

One of Motson's iconic moments, December 1990, FA cup second round tie at Wycombe [Wycombe were a non league club then, who got Peterborough] standing pitchside in a blizzard, after the match had already been postponed ;D

You knew it was a big game when Motson was commentating on it, having said that he did miss some European Cup finals when Barry Davies was commentator instead.

He took over the mantle of 'the voice of football' from Kenneth Wolstenholme - an almost impossible feat and achieved a loveable almost comic status as the football geak's football geak. Did it for decades and yet can't remember any noticeable howlers a la Coleman. He will be missed, like a harmless old uncle sat on his own in a corner at a family 'do' cos all he can talk about is footy.

Motty (and Barry Davies), Murray Walker, Dan Maskell, Bill Mclaren... if you were of a certain age, these were the go to guys for your commentary.

RIP

Took the words right out of my mouth. I loved listening to Bill McClaren; his voice oozed passion and knowledge.

John Motson was in the same vein. He knew how to paint a picture with his words. He was so generous and professional. Probably my favourite football commentator.

A real gentleman.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Motty was I can’t remember anyone complaining he was biased against their team. When you think how long his career was and the nature of football fans, that’s really something.

He actually knew when to step away from Live commentary in 2008 although he did still do MOTD for another few seasons, it's a shame Martin Tyler is still carrying on, he just sounds so bored whenever he's on a game now, like he doesn't want to be there at all
