Rollerball (1975) - Sci-Fi/Bonus

My favourite sci-fi film of the 70's, one that takes elements from a range of dystopian science fiction sources and combines them with a thrillingly exciting sports film. Caan is terrific, the stuntwork is next level and it has probably my favourite movie ending of all time.

I've now collected all the infinity stones: Kubrick, Kurosawa, Ozu, Tarkovksy, Hitchcock and Mizoguchi...

Ugetsu Monogatari (1953)

Kenji Mizoguchi's sublime supernatural fantasy works as a bittersweet cautionary tale about chasing your desires, over appreciating the treasures you already have. I couldn't fit in Mizoguchi's masterwork 'Sansho the Bailiff' into my roster, but delighted to draft his other emotionally-haunting/hynotising gem.

My Darling Clementine (1946)

BONUS Cat. 1 Western
Dir: John Ford

Arguably the greatest Western ever made, it is the original great film about the Earps and the OK Corral. A career-best performance by Victor Mature (in a great career). Fonda is perfect as Wyatt Earp. A beautiful film to look at, setting the backdrop to a thrilling story.

Oliver! (1969) - Musical

If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Duel (1971) - Bonus pick #2 - Action

In a change of pace from the 40s cinema, I wanted to go for one of my favourite cult films. This is essentially a classic monster chase movie where the monster is a giant fuck off truck. It's an incredibly simple premise which keeps it's suspense throughout thanks to Spielberg's superb use of cinematography and an excellent performance from Dennis Weaver.

Director: Steven Spielberg

Charade (1963) - Romance/Bonus

The two most charming people in movie history, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, bouncing off each other with an absolute dynamite script and oodles of chemistry. And that's before you get on to a stellar supporting cast in Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy, as well as the wonderfully scenic early 60's Paris and a brilliantly twisty-turny plot. A romance? Look at the banter in this scene:
