In my opinion Starcraft is the only game that can be entertaining for a neutral to watch. I don't play the game and can still watch it without being too bored. The MLG commentators do a good job of making the game exciting. All other games, especially "MOBA" games like Dota 2 and League of Legends, are very dull to watch unless you are actually big into the game as a player. Never did enjoy watching first-person shooters either.

I quite enjoyed the Quake duel tournaments, it can be a bit boring though. Starcraft2 is great to see, I can't even win most games against AI myself, but seeing the top players is quite amazing.

I've never had the chance to watch Quake, but I can definitely imagine its gameplay being more entertaining to watch than that of other first-person shooters.

I honestly think Starcraft is MLG's only chance to succeed in the long run. It's legitimately enjoyable to watch. But I feel that the players themselves need to show a bit more unpredictability in their behavior. Too many of the top players display little or no character, especially when the scene is dominated by Koreans; there is too much of an emphasis on displaying perfect gamesmanship and respect to your opponents. I feel that the scene could benefit from a bit more emotion and drama between the professional players. Needs a few "heels" amongs the top players to add to the excitement of the gameplay itself.

I like watching SF4 and MVC3 caps on youtube.  Even if I don't really understand what's going on, in terms of the finer points of the games, the personality of each player comes through in their play style.

“It's impossible,” said Pride.  “It's risky,” said Experience.  “It's pointless,” said Reason.

I don't know much about competitive Counter Strike or Call of Duty, but Starcraft is definitely a sport. The game is very complex and requires concentration and skill. In my humble opinion it's comparable to chess.

The COD events are huge, the top teams like Optic and Envyus are quite a big draw to a lot of the COD community.  They will often make it over to this side of the pond too, to the EGL events (often held in Blackpool) and the like.

I've seen some of the Starcraft stuff out in Asia, and I can't believe how popular it is.  I'd say that the "sport" is going to continue growing as the quality and depth of mulitplayer grows and also as the ability to connect different parts of the world through the internet grows.  Eventually I think you'll see there being a World Championship for gaming.

Even a company like Red Bull has seen the potential in this and started their own gaming division.

Fighting games e.g. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (UMVC3), Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition 2012 (SSFIV or just AE2012), and others are huge in California, New York, Japan and Korea with top pros such as Daigo Umehara, Justin Wong, Poongko, ChrisG, Combofiend, PRBalrog and many others becoming minor celebrities.  Some pros like Alex Valle have gone on to becoming commentators or hosting their own live streams.

Sport in the same way chess is imo. Very interesting, but will never be truly considered a sporting like football, rugby etc. But the league of legends community is huge, and literally this weekend my mates (and me) were watching top teams duke it out on the tv.

Personally I would be reluctant to consider esports on the same level as football and such anyway. There's something off about it.

i didn't know people would seriously argue its a sport

not attacking them (or yous rather!) as its pointless arguing over the description of a word (who needs to classify things anyway really?), but sport is (competitive) physical activity for me.

If horse racing and motorsport are sports than so is video gaming, you're still physcially interacting with the tool that you're using - it's no different.

No that's just all down to your own connection, so I don't think anyone can really. Maybe on PC? Don't know much about that scene. That's one of the main reasons they play at LAN, so everyone is on an even playing field and the game is as smooth as it can be.

Valve's Dota 2 tournament (The International) has the biggest prize pool, with the winners getting $1mil (prize pool over $1.5mil, this summer will be the third one.

$200k/player for the winning team, for a few days of work it's not too shabby  :P
