a special treat this sun kissed friday.  jamie jones last friday night at plastic people in london.  he was supposed to be playing goa in rome - very cool club - but the volcano put paid to that and here's the rawk dividend.  deep, deep dirty druggy house music of a highly sophisticated character this is right up my strasse:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/iwxygc

working on getting a track listing but might take a wee while ;D

this is another superb mix, thats had positve responses form all my mates that have heard it.gonna enjoy him alot at glasto this year
any joy with a tracklist? cant find any on the internet.

ironically jamie was filling in for the motor city drum ensemble at plastic people when the volcano stopped flights.

unfortunately i didn't hear about it until after the event - it would have been a treat hearing him on their rig.

jamie is currently playing at kubicle who are doing a party at the t-bar tonight if you fancy a sunday special.

no joy on the tracklist though my mate luca was talking me through it last night.

unfortunately i was pissed and am too hungover to try to remember any of it yet.

he's mustard.  really lovely bloke as well.

donnacah costello mix is a trip down memory lane - i bought most of these records when i was a ankle biter.

if you like the rough stuff check out 'ass and titties' from dj assault.

definitely more from the ghetto side of detroit you have to see him dj to believe it.

none harder:

I want to make a summer shakedown mixtape. What's the best software for mixing tracks, seguing one track into another, and maybe adding some cool sounds in between tracks. I'd prefer it if said software was free!

thump and bump.  jamie's starting his own label very soon.  he will still have stuff out on crosstown rebels but he's got so much new music that's not in that techno/house zone that he wants to put it out himself and also stuff from lee foss who is another dj you're going to love if you haven't checked him out already.  he makes records with jamie as hot natured.  more on a disco tip they've been playing sets at bridge and tunnel money waster favourite venue movida.  i hate the club but its interesting to see how well this sound goes down in there.

here's a youtube to another jj banger.  its 'people get real' - robin hood (jamie jones remix)

it is indeed superb and a bit of a manifesto shift from the man himself to a deeper sound.  i first heard it when we were at an after party in ibiza after the dc-10 opening/closing one off party.  jamie needed a bit of a lie down and stuck this on for a couple of hours though to be fair he did manage to spin from around 6am until midnight when i had to go home for fear of a kick in the balls from the mrs ;D

here's the flyer and check out the line up:

big.  dj wise he's always been one of my faves from detroit as he plays it sexy with lots of house which is nice for the ladies.  i also think my favourite sound is techno djs playing house.  more about the sounds than the songs but a good rhythm to dance too.  did he play 'french kiss'?  he usually does.  as does mr garnier with his 'crispy bacon' further up the page and nothing wrong with that.

Don't know mate, I wasn't there alas. I agree he's brilliant.

Nice to discover threads like this. Get myself a bit updated. Enjoyed the Jamie Jones at Plastic People download, although I prefer my house/techno without vocals. Quite an 'old' sound to many of those tracks. Is that the trend in the clubs these days? (haven't been clubbing for about 10 years!)

indeed it is.  we've had a minimal thing rise and fall in the past five years - very exciting to hear things stripped down, cold, druggy and very electronic.  still the sound got a little ubiquitous and also it ends up never really going anywhere.  in porn terms there was no cum shot just an unrelenting soundtrack to 24 hour hedonism.  at the moment things are getting warmer.  disco - proper underground stuff none of your boney-m - has been big again for the past few years and that's meeting up with the house revival espoused by the likes of wolf + lamb.  with jamie its hitting a nexus:  he blends old and new in abelton to give it an edge and still retains a little bit of the ketamine driven weird of contemporary techno.  of course i'm over thinking this but you can tell its all something i really love.

Interesting. Good to hear the old styles are coming back into fashion, but then I'm biased as that's what I like. I guess everything comes round again eventually. In a way, it's probably harder to produce these days. I suppose the technology naturally makes everything crystal clear and 'modern' sounding, whereas it's dirtyness was part of the appeal. But if they can somehow reproduce the underground, progressive sound of, say, the early 90's, I reckon the new generation would lap it up.

I did try to update myself a while back by getting some of the Fabric mixes when they were going cheap in Virgin. Must admit a lot of it left me cold, but a few of the tracks hit that little spot at the back of the neck! I think they were mainly on the mixes by John Digweed, Doc Martin, Global Communication and Ralph Lawson. Might have to dig em out.

of those i think the doc martin was best for me.

in terms of production i think it makes things better.  jamie drops in 'cold world' by frankie knukcles (with the inimitable jamie principle on vocals) in his essential mix.  originally it was a bit flat on a rather shitty pressing from trax records - this was 1987 and there was no money in house music so they used to press the tracks on top of old vinyl ie old records - but he's layered in another drum line thorough abelton and as result its beefed up and sounds superb.

Yeah that one is good. Just dug it out and the six tracks from 08 to 13 really get my feet a-tappin!

Enjoying trawling through this thread. Will take me a while as work keeps getting in the way! That Terry Francis essential mix is nice. I've only got one cd of him dj-ing and it was a freebie from DJ mag in 2001. Got some decent tracks like Nils Hess - Alcohol Is My Favourite and Knights of XS - Something I Feel.

if you like terry francis i suggest getting his two seminal mixes on tribal uk architecture one and architecture two.  they pretty much capture the moment in house just before things started to be called tech house.  terry would pitch house records up to dramatic effect like charles webster's' 'better days' or slow techno down to bowl a new line and length.  for me a very refreshing alternative to the sasha and digweed sound that took over the mid-90s and filled clubs with the kind of people i wanted to go out and avoid.  apologies if you're a fan! ;D

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Terry-Francis-Presents-Architecture/dp/B0000247I8

volume two continues the momentum of bright, shiny, optimistic 90s e music but with the added rumble of breaks like the awesome hallums and jackson's 'don't hold back' that i signed for re-release on brighton's loaded records way back in the day:

Haha! No, not a fan of that sound (I think I know what sound you mean...bit too fast & too many hi-hats for my liking!). I know I stopped liking going out clubbing around that time, although i stumbled on for a few more years. My 'hey day' so to speak was 88-94 and the music from then will always have a place in my heart.

Thanks for the Terry Francis tips, I'll take a look.

Here's a couple of classics I've just been enjoying after this thread re-kindled an interest. The first is the instrumental (and therefore better imo!) version of perhaps the classic of all classics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6_RQ9ILumw

The second's a bit more obscure & in fact isn't the mix you'd hear most out (which was probably the Fabio Cozzi Club Mix, which came out later & is also on Youtube). But that version hasn't got nice NY grafitti photos to enjoy as the track plays!

pianos are definitely doing it on some dancefloors these days and jesus i remember the early 90s being absolutely drenched in them.  this track is a bit too retro for my tastes - i don't mind looking back but i like to bring something from today and, if at all possible tomorrow.  still the germans have set the pace for at least the past 5 years so always interested in posts from their neck of the woods ;D

@sparkiemark - they're both right up my street actually.

the neil howard track works very well when you've been up for a very long time and still has that halcyon sense of optimism that flooded in with the first wave of high quality ecstasy.

claude van stroke can be a bit 'main room' for my tastes but this is a tastt remix from the always cool john tejada.  nice one.

Just having a quick trawl on youtube again. Was actually searching on Darren Emerson, but ended up turning these tracks up...

Sexy vocals. Wish she was my ex and I was called David...and we were about to bump into each other at the cheese counter in Tescos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBfnRUBM3ck

There was no going back...well, we've all been there...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdnyKP7SUbA

And finally this one. Would probably go well on the car stereo belting up a quiet motorway at 3am. (Does this stray into that tech house territory that you're not keen on Hass?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfIJFkGxg34

Last two seem to be on Emerson's GU Singapore, along with an old classic - Hablando (from about the same era as the Mato Grosso one I posted y'day). Anyway, apologies for posting more old news. I'll try & self-censor myself. Slowly getting closer to the present day!  :P

just been enjoying sitting in my new home office grooving to this from nichola jaar on wolf + lamb.  he's some sort of child prodigy with roots in chile but born in nyc.  i love the music wolf + lamb put out and also their guest djs but never that convinced by their own sets.  still don't let that put you off giving this a spin its a proper summer groover and i can imagine there will be incendiary remixes coming out for ibiza this summer:

very effective.  love the illustration on the youtube too ;D

have you ever checked out nathan coles; terry francis or 'evil' eddie richards when he's playing house?  this record really captures the bustle of the wiggle parties i went to back in the mid-90s.

nathan had a production outfit with dave coker called get fucked with their all time classic being 'last night a dj fucked your wife' but can i find an mp3 to post?

it was on their debut album dot to dot.  they had a refreshingly unpretentious attitude to track titling with the detroit crew giving everything sci-fi vibes like 'rings of saturn' they instead boasted that they made records to make your drugs sound better.

i've been listening to an old matthew styles harris mix on resident advisor this morning and its reminding me just how good he is.

its ra 17 and dated from july 2006 which literally seems a lifetime ago in terms of how things have developed for the trippy house sound.

i'm afraid i can't find a link to this set from jamie jones favourite dj but here is a link to his remix of the royal we 'party guilt'

it's been moving more discerning floors for a while now:

this just in from the excellent french house and techno blog 'get the curse'.  this is their 100th podcast and to celebrate they are really spoiling us with some back to back action from the living legend andrew weatherall and french house genius ivan smagghe.

i used to go to paris to see ivan play back in the mid-90s.  he speaks literally perfect, accentless english and used to look like a healthy young architect while manning the decks at classic french record shop rough trade.  by the mid-90s he was covered in tats and looked altogether out of eating.  pipe cleaner arms and a vintage la lakers vest really set it off at a classic party where he played one of the best sets i've ever heard.

weatherall can do whatever he likes from alternative/balearic/indie-dance/house/electro/techo/rockabilly.  my brother in law wants him to get his disco records out and play at dalstons disco bloodbath but that's another story.  i first saw him play upstairs at 1988 night pyramid where he played off key indie records with a dance edge but he really became my hero at his own sabres of paradise and then at blood sugar.  i remember one bank holiday monday where he played at strutt and he absolutely blew the doors off.  he is ricardo villalobos favourite dj - he was crying when weatherall played before him at the last fabric birthday party - and if you ever get the chance to see him play grab it.

anyway here is a link to the mix hope you enjoy both the music and the boys amazing moustaches - wevvers rocking the full deiter maier ;)
