I remember him blowing out of his arse after sprinting from the halfway line for a one-on-one chance which he missed. Got sent off 45 minutes into his league debut too. Just an absolute flop.

Only to become the butt of a lot of jokes...

Best free in LFC history.

There’s not really an argument against that statement.

Aurelio, Babbel, Gary Mac, Milner. We have had some pretty decent free transfers.

Babbel before his illness was one the best players i can remember, absolutely brilliant player and pivotal to us doing the treble under Houllier

Indeed, we’ve had some good free transfers!

Going on the age he came here, how good he is, what we’ve won with his help, Joel tops the list for me.   After that Milly then Gary Mac.  Babbel was a great player, then the illness, then the fall out after he came back, so maybe soured it a little.

Markus Babbel was fucking amazing in his first year. Crying shame he got struck down with GB syndrome.

We have indeed had some amazing free transfers, with out wonderful Joel Matip being right up there.

Personal fave will always be Jari Litmanen though. Maestro

Matip is now becoming too unreliable, great player now ruined by injuries. A new centre back is also one of the priorities for next summer.

Keita made 40 appearances so it's correct he was available for most of the season. An anomaly for him.  Not sure about ox.

Keita missed eight games due to injury and Chamberlain was fit and available but rarely used probably because he was likely to leave in the close season.

I know I'm new to this forum, but who are all these 'fans' who have suddenly come out of the wood to wrongly slag off our players.  I think the last two times Matip was out was down to illness/coronavirus?

He's been excellent since his last proper injury.  I'd keep him, he'd be really useful to help rotate between Virgil & Konate.

This is why I won't call them supporters, as they don't support the team.  They are just fans of the club because we were doing well, I'd have loved to see their opinion of the club and players back in the mid to late 80's!

I was really glad for Joel, he had run into a spell of bad form he couldn't shake. For me he was nervous at the start (as was vvd somewhat, he should have blocked their goal although thats easy to say watching it was hit ferociously, but still. for a moment there it was a pretty dicy pairing) but he gradually righted himself by winning towering defensive headers and easily being a wall on d, and finally his feet came back into it and off he went. gained in strength throughout the game and hammered that baby home nicely.

A legend.

At his best, he is easily one of the best CB's in Europe in the last decade.

Positioning, tackling, passing, ball carrying, aerial dominance, goals. The complete package.
