The APLT is a great way of weighting the various fixtures over a season, and as such it gives a very useful indicator of progress. I love it!

<snip>
I see the APLT as an overview of where you stand in the grand scheme of things, as the season unfolds, and a really like it as is. I haven’t tracked it year on year, but presumably any discrepancies with the actual table are ironed out as the season progresses.

I don't see that there are discrepancies. It is an alternative way at looking at progress through the season. Discrepancy implies error. Differences yes, discrepancy no ... and the actual and alternate tables converge as the season progresses.

Par 3s in a row are a bollox though, as you can't get that graph line to go up. Or was that your point?

But the purpose of the line is to stay flat, isn't it? If a team takes exactly the par points will end up with 90 pts, which most time defines a champion. Raising the line is a bonus.

As I type Andros Townsend just hit a 30+ yard volley in against Man City. That’s not the sort of thing you see all the time! Man City are down 2-1 at halftime, and while I still expect them to win, they have work to do and a straightforward home game has all of a sudden become a puzzle for them to solve.

This was also very nicely played!  Well done.  Three assist points to you!

Spurs are massively under the radar for many people who can't see past City, but they're quietly going about their business, played the most teams away from the top 6 and will likely be there and thereabouts without some type of collapse.  From an Arsenal fan pov I'm of course waiting for a Kane injury and a hilarious collapse, but at this point the whole attack seems pretty well greased and I'm not sure that'd slow them down much.  Putting my 'neutral cap' on it's a good thing for the league to see three sides who are all right up there with only a couple of wins between them and falling back into the pack.

While I don't buy into the "best league in the world" hype, the PL certainly seems the most unpredictable. If you include Leicester seven teams have been in the mix for the league in recent times. It's brilliant.

This will offend purists but I do think the PL deserve more than four CL places. Six places might encourage complacency among the big six, but five places would still keep them keen. And six might give the likes of Everton etc a chance.

Sorry for going off topic, I will tie it back to the APLT by saying more than four CL places would require a new model!

Just need one of the cups to be won by an English team outside the top 4 for that!

Not sure how this league works, but are Everton still shit in this alternative league, or are they somehow, reasonably average?

Is there enough Kleenex for everyone?

City's red boxes look so much better now! Chelsea looked much of a surprise title contenders in the beginning, but Spurs are taking their place after being gash in the first rounds. And look at United, they have turned a corner and are in a champions form since last game!  ;D

Thanks, Prof!  :wave

Enough about Pep’s red box..

Point to note here... Spurs.. Hugely impressive after a couple of early blips.

Spurs doing well to be ahead of Man City. But I don't expect Spurs to beat many at all of the top 6 at home, which would take points off them.

I don't see that there are discrepancies. It is an alternative way at looking at progress through the season. Discrepancy implies error. Differences yes, discrepancy no ... and the actual and alternate tables converge as the season progresses.

I used the word discrepancy to mean “lack of compatibility” with the actual table, not error.
I think that’s what the word means I.e. a simple lack of compatibility, rather than error. If I’m mistaken and it does mean error, then difference it is then!

Either way, my expectation is a convergence as the season unfolds, as seasoned watchers indicate. It’s newer to me, but I love it, and the current APLT is a joy to behold.

Still think City are in the driver's seat. Despite the Palace slip up, they are unbelievably good at home, and that's where most of their toughest remaining games will be played.

If they drop points to either Southampton or Leicester and we get at least a draw at the Etihad then maybe I will change my tune  ;D

On the second graph I see Spurs have lost four games, but haven’t drawn any. They are racking up a lot of wins and look strong. Strange to go 18 games with no draws though.

If we still have a four point gap at the top after the game against Man City on Jan 3, I will give myself permission to start to believe this year might be the one. It has been brilliant so far, but there’s such a long way to go that I’m resisting the urge to get ahead of myself, even though it’s tempting!

Merry Christmas everyone, and thanks to Prof for the APLT!
